When she sets the inked lino cut onto the bed of the press, she places the 'guides' around the lino (the 2 right angle / corner pieces). These corner pieces then have additional 'guides' or slots(?) on top of them which are set out to the dimensions of the paper she is printing on - these guides allow the paper to sit on top of the inked lino in the exact place each time. Once the paper is sitting on the inked surface, she removes the guides and then prints.

I really enjoyed this demonstration. I did note that when cutting out the blue you had to leave the lines for the black. I would have assumed that the blue blob would be just cut out but then you would have lost those black lines. This is a very important point to understand the reduction process. And I just also realised the same goes for the red and yellow. I've learnt a lot from this video, thanks.

Thank you for sharing this. It's one thing to see a work of art and appreciate it from an aesthetic standpoint. But sometimes, there comes a work that, through technique, makes the observer think: "how in the world did they do this?" For those that like to take the world apart, it's doubly interesting. I also appreciate that the destruction of the linoleum at each stage turns the mass-production ability of the press on its head, forcing a kind of scarcity like more traditional mediums.

FYI I have watched this video at least 15 times. I'm actually trying to do this technique now. I think you explained it really well, so me watching it multiple times is about my learning curve. But it is really hard to find a step by step tutorial on reduction printmaking. This is really clear, and I appreciate it. I've just had trouble with paper, ink, carving, so I keep coming back to it because I am going to do this! Also Picasso was my first art love. I was very "off" him for a while due to his ...bad boyfriend status. 😂 Still you never forget your first ...😢
@Michelle6998832 Жыл бұрын
This is such a great tutorial & workshop video presentation. It makes you realize & understand that the "art" is the entire process behind the final print (no pun intended, lol). And now, I truly believe that's the way both artists envisioned it to be. Not the 1 print outcome/result, but the creative & labor intensive process needed to achieve it. Genius!
@earthinform2 жыл бұрын
Dear Christina, Thank you for such a measured and thoughtful video on this interesting process. I just finished a short course on it and I'm intrigued with the strategy needed for planning these kinds of images. Picasso's print was a great example and you dissected it brilliantly!
@songOmatic2 жыл бұрын
I would recommend doing a colour drawing on paper first, to plan the image, and use 4-5 maximum colours. THEN you can move on to the printing/cutting on a separate block of wood. Use your colour plan as a guide...
