Harvest Home / Boys of Bluehill (tin whistle, guitar)

I recently discovered my passion for playing hornpipes so here is "The Harvest Home" followed by "The Boys of Bluehill". I have a lot of fun playing these tunes.
Now the usual excuses:

We made two takes and although in the other I don't make all the mistakes that I make in this one, somehow I find this one a bit more enjoyable. Moreover I apologize for not making variations (to decrease repetitiveness), but I started playing these tunes only recently.
My brother doesn't know what guitar backing technique should be used for hornpipes so he made up some neat strumming, as you can see...

how do you play soooo fast ?? i just play the whistle for 3 days now and can play scarborough fair good, i play a guiness whistle in D ( from waltons) any idea how to get this fast?? any tips for me (A)??

I quite like it! Some mistakes may happen, we´re not watching opera though :-) I wouldn´t worry about variations - I hate this cliche that a tune without variations is boring, which leads to beginners adding variations, which are often too artificial and not Irish-sounding.

I really like this ... I've tried to play it, and can get the notes, but the rhythm in book-notes is sure totally different than the way it's played. I've got to work on the accents. Yours sounds so terrific! Is that a D whistle?

No prob.When I made this video I was playing tin whistle for 1 year and 9 months. The numbers correspond to the time of the notes. For more details search for ABC notation on google. There are also many programs that convert ABC to sheet music. Good luck.

indeed i (playing guitar in this video) have no background on ITM. my background is actually punkrock so i guess i tend to use punkrock techniques... but it actually makes it sound better for my taste :P

I have been working on these 2 tunes on my mandolins for a while now and I hope to be playing them on pennywhistles soon. It would be nice to be able to play them as good as you do :)

Start slow... and then with time (months) you will be able to play faster without problems. Don't try to play fast now at the beggining. If you do you will play bad and you will learn bad habbits. Give it time.

Good job! This is pure coincidence, because I learned these two tunes from an old Irish whistler in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare, Ireland, during the last Willy Clancy festival.

Hmm, you mean using a D whistle for Harvest Home and then a C whistle for Boys Of Bluehill? You think it sounds better? I will give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

My sister in Ireland gave me the music to this (she does set dancing and I play recorders) and I found your video on U-Tube. Amazing coincidence is that an alternative name for where I live in Norht Queensland, Australia (Bluewater) is Blue Hills (Qld 4818). Thank you for great playing! Ian
