Having extra home made MREs in your car and stuff, and the prospect of selling super good freeze dried dishes to campers, preppers, and having a light compact pantry of stuff you grow makes freeze deying alluring to me
@RedShiftedDollar11 ай бұрын
Freeze dryers are expensive, but when comparing them to the cost of other major food appliances like fridges and freezers, they aren't that bad. And they basically turn your freezer into a massive walk-in freezer that doesn't require constant power to keep it going. How much would a freezer that big cost? They actually make your existing fridge and freezer more effective too because you can freeze dry many things you would otherwise store in there like leftovers. Cooking is more efficient because you can make bigger more complex recipe batches of everything and instead of overloading the fridge with leftovers and being dulled by eating the same food for two weeks straight, you can freeze dry the rest and save yourself a ton of future meal prep to make that dish again. And you can make the healthiest snacks on the planet like freeze dried strawberries. It's the only long term fruit and food storage option I know of that doesn't involve adding a ton of sugar or salt.

I know you posted this 3 weeks ago, but I didn't see it come through and it was a thoughtful comment! We have the medium harvest right, it ranges from about $2500-$2900 where I live depending on the time of year and what deals you can find. But you're absolutely right, when we cook now we actually make double, triple, or even quadruple batches so we can freeze dry the leftovers. Then instead of putting them into the fridge or freezer we just package them up and put them in the pantry to use later! It costs just as much as a new fridge or something similar but if you utilize it and get some food stored it will end up paying for itself! The amount of nights we say "I really don't want to cook tonight" and we just grab some freeze dried stuff and quickly fix it up.. oh man it's amazing!

Mushrooms. I’m interested in freeze drying mushrooms, and making them into powder . Mushrooms don’t have much of a shelflife in refrigeration, but they are valuable in the diet. Mushroom powder would make it easier to add them to a host of meals. It will also make it easier to feed mushrooms to people who claim they don’t like mushrooms, because the complaint is usually something to do with texture. There is a wonderful recipe for using zucchini as the principle ingredient of a pizza crust. I’ve had it numerous times and it’s terrific. But, it would be even more successful. If the zucchini were in powder form, I’m sure no need to remove the moisture.

I'm surprised you don't have a link for the extra trays. Unless I missed it, but I've scrolled up and down several times checking the links. Anyway, thanks for the info. I wasn't sure why everyone was talking about a bread run. I'm about to set up my new Harvest Right FD and wanted to learn as much as possible before I get started.

Do you need to cook meat before freeze-drying? Could I do for example, raw chicken chunks in order to season/cook as desired after rehydration.
@WhitepepperFarm10 ай бұрын
Absolutely! When we do steaks we do them raw and then we even rehydrate in some marinade, it’s great! Just remember even when it’s dried, you still want to treat it as if it was raw. So same food precautions as you normally take with raw food!

Why does it have a 15amp cord if they want a 20amp outlet?
@bobs37295 ай бұрын
The cord end is 15 amp rated. The machine may peak power usage to around that with the pump and everything running. A 20 circuit is plenty for the medium freeze dryer machine. A 15A circuit breaker may trip with extended run times.
