It’s nice to see good people like you who have shared your information with us recieve a freeze dryer. For us, it’s not the cost that prevents us from the purhase but the question of how long it will last. Where we live, there are no avenues for repair and we are no mechanically adept. Also, the one we like is heavy and we are getting up in years. Hope you get many years of happiness from the unit. Enjoy!

The silicon tray mats work well for fruits and vegetables. Also, you can do multiple layers of fruit and veggies if you use parchment paper in between layers.

Freeze dryers are pretty cool but they are definitely never ever going to be in my budget and I guess I've been prepping so long without one I'm not really interested in getting it but I do like to watch other people's videos about them. I am pretty sure they won't work with our off grid power either but they are still really cool. I hope you enjoy making all kinds of good things!

Everyone's situation is different. In my case, the way we produce food and live, and the fact I have been doing this so long, I have enough for my whole family for quite a few years plus we are almost self sufficient anyway. I spend less than $1000 a year on groceries. Plus, via a gleaning group I am in, I have been given so much freeze dried food I don't really need to make anymore, and everything else I can use my working pantry for that I rotate through. The freeze dried stuff I have is in number 10 cans and sealed and lasts 25 ish years. It's my true emergency stuff. Everything else I dehydrate on solar with a homemade dehydrator I built myself and I will rotate through in 3 years anyway. The way I have everything set up, I can rotate through everything and still have enough for years so I just can't justify the cost of a whole other thing that costs more than what I spend over 5 years of groceries. Plus, we would have to either be grid tied or modify our power set up which would incur another cost. Technically I have the money to buy one, but don't feel it's cost effective for me so it's not in my budget. I couldn't justify the cost. Now all that said, that's me personally. We are all different. For some people, a freeze dryer is the perfect thing and will help them immensely. What I do definitely won't work for some others, and vice versa.

Well, not sure if you know but as a general rule you keep the oil level at 1/2 - works a little better and does not mist as much - The other thing you want to do and keep the door open a bit when not using it, it avoids orders building up. I have he same size dryer, 18 eggs per tray - they come out awesome and nicely fit into a 2L/ half gallon mason - The other thing you may like to do is cheese, it also comes out awesome. The another thing to get a bang for your buck - frozen fruit from Costco - If you do blue berries and pineapple you just let them thaw in the bag then drain off the juice and they come out great. Ive been doing a lot of bananas, another one that is great. Enjoy

Thanks for the easy set up video.. I just found your site.. I have had a Harvest right freeze dryer for many years now and ...yes... shame on me... have never used it. I am fixing to change that now, only thing is, I have an older style pump so the fittings are a little different, no worries though... I just opened it up today so its all brand new, even though the freeze dryer has been setting in a spare room for years just waiting for me.. I know, I know... I am sufficiently ashamed at my procrastination. Your site has encouraged me and got me more excited to get this going. I have been slowly building an emergency pantry with affordable backpackers size foods, now I will really do the right thing and get my Harvest Right working for me. I look forward to more videos. Thanks for the kick in the butt. :)

Do not use that cart and set up. You will generate to much heat like that. That will make your batches take way longer. Heat is not good for your system. The pump puts off lots of heat. Humidity is also bad. The oil pump with that set up is just to close to the machine. You will want a little distance from the machine and some fans to cool the system down.

Everyone, DT was addressing the way I had the pump directly behind the freeze dryer. The dryer gets hot, but the pump gets very hot, changing the efficiency of the dryer. It wasn't about the metal cart, it was the way I had it arranged on the metal cart. DT is absolutely correct and as I mentioned, it was only for demonstration purposes. It's been changed since then.

I haven't wanted to spend the money, but lately I've been thinking about all of the canning I've done and how it could get old before I get to it. Can you comment on the idea of taking your home canned goods and freeze drying them? It would be using a lot of energy per unit of food, but might be worth it?
@GoshenPrepping
@GoshenPrepping 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with that statement/question. We love canning and of course, it does take energy (money) as well. However, the price of the freeze dryer, plus the energy (money) is more. Clearly it's more, but it's all what you want to do. There are certain items that don't can very well - like leftovers. The freeze dryer can do more for you and is more versatile. I think that some people might be in a position where a freeze dryer can take them to a new level in prepping.
@NewYorkJennifer
@NewYorkJennifer 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if you answered my queztion, I probably worded it wrong. What I actually meant is, I have a lot of home canned meats and stews and garden produce. I don't care about the veg, really, as it was grown for "free" (not really, but you know what I mean), but the meat amounts to a lot of money. If I never used it very fast and it degraded very much, I'd feel like it was a real waste, and have to eat an inferior product down the road anyway. So it occurred to me if I could start with canning from, say, 2019, 2020, and freeze dry that, that I could have a product in ten years that would still be good. I love to can, but I've been stocking so much the last few years that I'm afraid I'm not using it fast enough.
@GoshenPrepping
@GoshenPrepping 2 жыл бұрын
I see... Yes, that is certainly an option. We haven't canned meat yet, but everyone I've spoken with says its super easy and works well. More so, it doesn't matter if the meat is raw or prepared. In fact, you can make a whole meal, already prepared, and then freeze dry it. Personally, I don't know how long meat will last when canned. I assume it will last for maybe 5 years tops? However, freeze dried, I don't think has an expiration.

With all those small kids, consider using some type of furniture anchor(s) for mitigating any tip hazards. Small kids enjoy climbing things when parents are not around, and large heavy objects can easily and quickly squash a small baby or child. (No joke, lived next to a family whom had a air compressor tip on a baby.) These freeze dryers are extremely heavy and large. Cannot believe they desire placing these on tables without using furniture anchors! Regardless of not being within earth quake hazard anymore, I screw three inch deck screws into all (or most) of my wall shelving, securing to a wall stud. For heavy objects on shelving, I'll secure each, the large object and shelving to a wall stud. This harvest right freeze dryer and Hally stainless table, I don't know what I'm going to do as of yet, as the legs are not near a wall stud, and the dryer has no anchor point. I'm considering steel rope, but need to learn to crimp the steel roping. Good luck.

From everything I've heard it takes along time to get them. I know of a few people that have been waiting weeks and over a month. I'd be worried the SHTF before I'd get it. Can you tell us what the waiting period is to get this particular one?

Had mine for four years. It's probably paid for itself. Love hate relationship with this machine. I think it's to late in the game to go this route. 3k worth of sugar, beans, rice, cans...... Would go a long way. If this is not the end of time, it might pay for itself. Good luck and God bless.

We can't afford it either. We use the regular oven on low heat 100-150°. The trick is to keep items thin or small. "Riced" cauliflower and broccoli dry so much quicker the florets. Shredded carrot dries quicker than matchstick.

@@GoshenPrepping using it every other day is $30 a month. But, if one freeze dries the food that is the most expensive or the hardest to find, the cost of electricity would be worth it.

I understand the prepping part of getting ready for emergencies, if freeze dried food last at least 25 years. This Freezer makes no sense, why? because you work so hard to get your food storage in your home, spending so much money. But once the emergency happens, don't you think that hungry people will leave you alone? I am sure Marauders will constantly knock your door and if you don't answer, they will bring your door down. You could shoot them all until you run out of bullets or they get you first, unless you are Rambo! I don't think this freezer is worth $2800 plus tax!
