The mullein flowers are great added to Olive oil & garlic cloves to make a natural healing ear oil. If you cut the stalk early on, it will grow several flowering heads, increasing your harvest. Great video! Thanks for sharing.

Mullein can totally be gathered and harvested in the flowering stage. In fact many commercial tinctures from herbal companies include fresh Mullein Leaf and Flowers. Also the flowers themselves have uses that are similar to the leaves. It would be nice to explain why you choose not to use the flowers, but to say don't harvest at the flowering stage is misleading and incorrect. Not trying to be rude just giving my opinion.
@zeroskate426
@zeroskate426 6 жыл бұрын
mullein grows in 2 separate years, the first year it will ONLY grow a leafy rosette and never grow a stalk&flower. This is the best year to harvest leaves because all of the plant's energy and nutrients are going directly to them. Year two it will also grow a leafy rosette before about mid-June, where it will then begin growing a long stalk that will flower later, in Year two its best to harvest leaves before stalk growth because again, all of the plants focus is basically there, but when it does flower, its best to find non-Edible uses for the leaves (TP, bandages, wraps, ect) because they no longer contain NEAR as much benefits as the flower cone, flowers specifically, because all the plants effort is going to the stalk&flower to look and be tall, pretty and as potent as it can manage!

that's not completely true, the plant is like a chemical factory and some times flowers have much more potent volatile oils than the leaves...would like to see scientific study on this

Tomas Del Balso you know that I said that the flowers are more potent right?
@lonoster8501
@lonoster8501 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, you dont out right say that. Ok, i removed my "special " comment directed towards Tomas, but I will say this.... If you want to see some scientific study, look it up. Not all plants are the same and it IS implied that once the stock begins it sends the energy there, so can u just take Zeros words and think a bit first, not being a jerk, just trying to help. I have not watched the entire video yet, I stopped when i read the reply to zero. However, if its said ( which i havent yet heard) not to use flowers. Look up using mullein for ear aches and infections. Many people yank the whole plant in one piece and turn it upside down as is to dry. It's also believed to have a mild sedative.............. Learn meanings of CONSTITUENTS, this can be very helpful. Many plants will do the same thing, but if u learn the meanings, it will help u know what the plant can do for you. Just my opinion
@zeroskate426

Lon Oster oh yeah the flowers are really good for teas and rich in their chemical value, I made the mistake of waiting until the whole cone bloomed to flowers so I could harvest em but come to find out the other day, they only bloom a couple flowers at a time! Lesson learned haha, take them as they come. I don't like to spread false knowledge so you can safely heed what I've said about mullein, I do wish I knew more about what exactly it does in your body and what it's good for specifically though! My next learning lesson. Also you're right I didn't directly say that but it's implied when I said when it begins growing a stalk and flowering, it's focus is on it's flowers and it will deliver more chemicals there to produce a good product.

Dee knows what's up 💜 Crush your garlic and let it sit for 5 mins afterwards, while it collects its allicin (sp?). It starts collecting after initial crushing/chopping. At 10 mins it starts to dissipate, but the allicin is the healing properties we need to understand. Adding to tea at the right timing will not damage that process. Max temp is 5 mins at low heat to maintain stability and maximize healing properties.

I love you and respect that you re doing this. Two mentions - 1.) you were stating your concern about unsanitary surfaces at the same time you were touching you nose/face, 2.) you should never dry in the sunlight as it decimates the virility of the plant power to heal. Bonus, to rid you of Yellow-Jackets cut a 16 oz. plastic water bottle at the top 1/4 where it begins to slope upward toward the opening. Turn it into itself so the smaller opening is down into the bottle. Pour 1/4 cup apple juice into the bottle and set away from your back area. In a couple of days you will find the bottle full of dead Y/J's. Continue this until you have no more wasp problem. Nice job on the video!

Your child sounded pretty bad. If I can be so bold as to give you another alternative solution that I took...choose to emulate if you like...magnolia leaves/flowers in a pot of water, boil, deep breaths with towel over head...every 30 min for first 2 hours. Hourly for first 5-6 hours after that and then maybe every few hours until better. I had borderline pneumonia and about to go to hsp. Magnolia had me considerably better by hour 2 and all good by day 2.

Direct sunlight isn't always ideal, but being outside like she had it is great for ventilation and airflow. It's not going to zap the medicinal qualities out of the herbs to dry in a bit of sunlight, but in a dark cabinet with good airflow and no light exposure and you will retain the most beneficial oils and constituents.

Hmm. I've been drying mine in a black cotton pillowcase in the car. Works in a couple hours, but despite the cheapness of the pillowcase, seems like that wouldn't be the best choice for airflow. But I can't see how a closet would be any good for airflow either.

If you mix mullein & blueberry leaf tea, it works wonders for allergies. Of course the mullein is a cough suppressant & expectorant & the blueberry leaf tea reduces the inflammation in the sinuses. We use the Celestial Seasoning True Blueberry because we don't have any blueberry bushes yet. It does have a little bit of actual blueberries in it for the blueberry flavor, it's quite a pleasant taste.

Mullein cough mixture is one of the best and easy to make. Harvest the yellow flowers and layer them in a Mason jar in alternate layers with sugar and flowers. Fill jar to around 1 inch from the top and sit on windowsill for three weeks aprx. When the sugar has dissolved and a beautiful yellow brown mixture is formed then it's ready. Use a teaspoon full of the indescribable delicious mixture when coughs are present. Another Mullein fact is that many struggle to raise it from the literally thousands of seeds that each plant makes. Only sprinkle them on the surface and never cover them with soil as they will go into hibernation. They can hibernate and keep alive for over 200 years.

You would be far better off, with that hacking I hear, by using a quality organic garlic, chopped and pressed to mush with a fork into organic olive oil. Let sit about ten minutes. Then mush a bit again to mix it up. Rub oil with pulp all over under chin, on neck and chest. Sleep in tea shirt. A dropper full of oregano oil to swallow, with water quick. It's potent, so if child can't handle, rub on bottoms of feet instead. It all goes into bloodstream. No sugars, including fruits. Very effective. And keep fingers out of nose. Drill that in, because that is a good way to get a cold, or sinus infection. A few drops of peroxide dropped into nostril, with head tilted back, and, snorted, burns but kills all that bacteria up the sschnozzel. And for congestion, I pass out little snips of Dr. McGillicuddy's Mentholmint liquer. Because it works like a charm.

@@Samanthaf420 that would be a small God send. ;-) Not only would that help me with the lung issues or helping to protect us from the CCP virus but it would also help me to kick a 50 + year smoking habit. I have some challenged young adults in my charge that I'd like to be around to help teach them to be self-sufficient if at all possible. I know that the high desert climate is not were meulin typically grows but I'm pretty sure that with just a small handful of seed I can get it to grow in semi shaded areas or in containers. I may be disabled but I still have lots to pass on to these young people while I still can. ;-) please let me know what you need thanks, Natureboy.

I'm confused.. This is the opposite of everything I've learned about mullien. The rosettes are the first year they grow. You do not collect those leaves unless you're going to use them for toilet paper. The second year the stalk grows with the flowers. That's the time to harvest the leaves and the flowers. You can smoke the dried leaves to relieve asthma and make tinctures out of the leaves and flowers as well as make tea. Everything I've read you don't give herbal meds to small children and pregnant or nursing women. You need to have books on this to know what kids can and can't have. You can make syrups with garlic and onion and berries etc... those types of plants, but be careful around herbs!!! And tinctures should be made for them using glycerin and not alcohol.

Yes. SARS-Covid trashed a percentage of my lungs. This is my goal since pulmonologist couldn't offer an aid or Rx. I don't expect a complete repair using mullein, but it seems to make the day go by with less issues. And I heard it can be helpful to ward away new infections/exposures since it's suppose to have antiviral properties. It's just tea. Or a boring smoke if you swing that direction.

I am always excited when a mullien grows in my garden. One showed up late last summer, so I worked around it. This year, my granddaughters have enjoyed watching it get taller than the 3 year old, the almost 6 year old, their 5'10" mother. 😊 It's like a growing garden statue, and I have made sure it gets watered during a long dry month of June. I will be harvesting some leaves for winter cough uses. 👍 I think I have seen small ones nearby. Some get pulled as weeds and fed to the chickens.

Not trying to be rude but I can't believe how many people don't know how to pronouns the word mullein. There is no yen on the end of the word! Also I use the flowers and infuse them in good olive oil for 1-2 mths. When I strain the flowers out, I first strain though a mess strainer, then pour the oil in a coffee strainer that is in a mess strainer, that is set over a deep dish and let it set over night because it takes a good 8-10 hrs depending on how much your straining, the idea is when you wake in the morning, it's all strained and you have a beautiful clear yellow oil, to make into your salve. I rub the oil that may get on my cupboard or left in the bowl all over my shoulders, hands, back etc and my arthritis doesn't bother me for several day! Plus it makes my skin so soft!

I like your hanging dehydrator. I grow a lot of herbs through the summer and we use them fresh but haven't ever tried drying them yet. I don't know why but I always assumed there would be more to it than that so I hadn't taken the time to research how to do it. I'm going to have to look into getting one of those dehydrators.

Question for you. In your video you say the water needs to come to a boil, and not just a simmer. I'm still learning....so why is the full rolling boil important? It's not a challenge question, but me wanting to learn from other's knowledge.

I have 5 questions about your tea, could you answer them? Boil 2 quarts of water add mullein leaves (how much?) Use 2 quart glass jar Add dried mint (how much?) Add a tinny pinch of cayenne pepper Add a little pinch of ginger fresh, or powder 1 tsp. stevia herb It has to steep for a long time for the mullein to get into the tea ( how long?) Strain the tea through a funnel, and a coffee filter, it takes a long time, it's a slow drain. Then; Add lemon juice (how much?) Add honey (how much?)

I use a few teaspoons per quart of water. I generally just put the herb in and let it steep for a long time. Then I run the tea through the coffee filter.

It's German. Not that I speak German, but when two German vowels go walking, it's usually the second one that does the talking. Until this video, I'd never heard it pronounced any way other than , "MULL-ən". But I've never asked a German. We Americans have a terrible habit of absolutely butchering foreign names and words. We're probably all saying it wrong.
