On the wheat, you can go through and pull the tops. Then use something to knock down the wheat. There have been folks in NC doing this and keeping the ground cooler and holding moisture in.

Good morning Lawson Family! Bountiful blessings! I am definitely going to put in garlic this fall, after I get the sweet potatoes out of my raised garden bed. 😂 I’m going to try my peppers again, since I finally have 70+ degrees nights 🤞🏼❤ thank y’all for sharing & inspiring me to keep planting!! p.s. would like to see how you process the garlic for storing.

Megan,I believe you said you replant the garlic in October, I believe I'll give it a try this fall. Thanks and Have a Great Weekend 🙂.

I grow a lot of garlic, perhaps as much as you. I save some to replant in October, eat freshly harvested garlic and then salt cure a fair amount. Salt curing keeps the garlic very well and prevents it from sprouting. It turns a lovely caramel color and the liquid that seeps out I use to flavor soups and stew(1 tbsp/pot)(taste like garlic and is a little salty). Here is my recipe for salt cured garlic. 2:1 ratio garlic to salt 1 lb of garlic to .5 lbs of salt(coarse sea salt) Peel Garlic Cloves 2. Mix Garlic Cloves and Salt 3. Place in a container with false bottom, so the liquid can drain and the cloves do not sit in the liquid. I use a Tupperware like container with a perforated insert that keeps the liquid separate. It is air tight as the garlic is very fragrant. It will take several weeks for the cure to take place. It is finished when there is no longer any liquid weeping from the cloves. I like to slice this garlic and place it on freshly baked pizza. Enjoy your videos.

That garlic is awesome! We had a small patch of about 12 garlic just to try it. It did pretty good but we think that cold snap back in December stunted them a bit. But still a good size for us. Idk if I would plant 10 pounds though! 😂 Andy cracks us up.

Hi . If you pull the garlic scapes off and let the garlic grow a few more weeks you'll have bigger bulbs
@TrueGritAppalachianWays
@TrueGritAppalachianWays Жыл бұрын
Yes I harvested actually about half the scapes and just let the others go. Our garlic was starting to somewhat rot in the ground so we had to get it up. Thanks for the advice!

Great harvest! For some reason I had the same problem with my first round of cowpeas. I just replanted but this time I soaked them for about three hours in water first. I had 100 percent germination rate and they are doing excellent 🤷‍♀️

I’m curious that y’all cut the stalks off before the necks dried. I’ve always let the whole thing dry but love the idea of doing that. They cure ok and don’t rot?
@TrueGritAppalachianWays
@TrueGritAppalachianWays Жыл бұрын
Yes! It has actually dried out wonderfully! I don't know if where this is hard neck garlic if it makes a difference, because when we do soft neck I braid it and let the whole thing dry like you said. But this has kept great

Megan do ya grow summer or winter squash? Do you have trouble with squash vine borer? And what do you do for them I'm so fustrated!
@TrueGritAppalachianWays
@TrueGritAppalachianWays Жыл бұрын
We actually grow both! Knock on wood we've never had trouble with vine borers, but do have to fight squash bugs, I've lost many squash plants to these little pests. If they get really bad, we have used spinosad to get rid of them, bad thing is, once the damage is done it's like the squash plants have a hard time recovering in our experience anyways. I appreciate you watching and hope you get rid of those!!
