It's great to grow food for fresh eating all summer, but I love to be able to store my food for winter eating too! Come harvest with me as I gather food from my garden to store for winter use. I will also keep you a quick look at the watermelon that I have growing on a trellis in my garden.
I grow flowers and vegetables in Saskatchewan, Canada. My cold hardiness zone is zone 3b. I have an average of 110 frost free growing days each year. The past few years have seen our temperatures go as low as -37C (-34.6F) to as high as 37C (98.6F). Come see what and how I grow in these conditions.

I love watching gardens from fellow Saskatchewan. It was a blazing summer, wasn't sure what was going to grow!

Yes, cold start to high heat is a difficult way to garden.

That’s a dandy onion haul ms PPG! Thanks for showing how you dry them. It seems like you’re going to have a pretty good autumn in the garden actually.

@PrairiePlantgirl Awww!😃 Your apples look great! You and your garden really are inspiring!👍 We just came through what should be the last heatwave. Heat indexes got up to 112.😰 This morning, I prepared my spot for fall sugar snap peas. This is the best time of year to grow them in our area. We get hot so quickly in the spring.

It’s great how much succession planting you can do in your area.

I need to cut that celery also as I’m sure it’s done 😂 I’ll get the chainsaw out. We don’t have a root cellar either but created an above ground storage with very thick refrigerated building panels and covered it with bark. Works fairly well except this extreme heat we’ve had is not welcomed. I dry my garlic and onions in a shade cloth covered greenhouse with windows opened. We had a very wet summer and had a few onions that rotted during drying.

Celery starts as a tiny little seedling and ends as a bush!

I like Ailsa Craig onions. They don't keep past 6 months and are no good for turning to onion powder. So make sure you get them eaten before they sprout or rot.

I find bigger onions tend to store longer with most varieties. I prefer a more medium sized onion to use in recipes. It is always fun to harvest large vegetables but they are not always the most practical to use.

Did you notice any fungus on the onions? Especially seeing how your season was wet. My shallots always seem to struggle with some sort of issue where the bulbs start to get slimmy while I'm letting them dry in my shed.

The only slime was on the stems where the slugs like to play. I’ll have to keep an eye on them as they dry.

Thanks PPG. What variety of celery are you growing? My celery is 5 ft. tall and woody very early. They went to seed like a month ago. I need a new variety that's better in this climate.
