That green on the potato is called solanine. And you shouldn't throw away those potatoes oh, they will be great seed potatoes for your next season. They will grow great potatoes and if you mound of soil a little bit you won't get that green on the top layer. This is my first time seeing your Channel and I am a subscriber for sure. I thought the same thing too! Except when I did my weekly garden tour video I found several sticking up out of the ground and were getting scalded. Couple that with the fact we had/have rain in the forecast for about a week straight, I figured it was time. I'm glad we harvested them. Such a blessing. Let me know how yours turn out!

The first one I pulled I jokingly said "Oh, These must be NEW potatoes" because they were so small and I was thinking ...this is gonna be a Looong video if it doesnt get any better than this...Then, they just kept coming and kept coming! Potatoes in my garden are doing well. We got a late start but they’re growing anyways! If you forget a few pieces of potato and they overwinter they will grow next year and will be your first potatoes of the season! We always seem to miss a couple of them. It’s a nice surprise!

We are contemplating putting another potatoe crop in right now! I need to turn the soil in 2 of the beds and I think we can get 1 more crop in before winter! It sure was an unexpected and Very pleasant harvest!😊

I feed mine to my chickens and cows. They haven’t died in about 50 years so imma keep feeding them! They say don’t feed them if they have seeds on em ! Animals are pretty smart they won’t eat anything that’s going to harm them.

Great harvest! Next time pick all the flower buds off as they show up and the potatoes will be bigger, also keep adding soil to hill them up, it keeps the sun, bugs and critters off them, I grow them on my 8 acre field here in New Brunswick Canada zone 4b.

I loved watching how excited you were digging the potatoes. Reminds me of last year when I planted potatoes for the first time in big buckets and at harvest time I told my friends that I was a potato farmer! I only planted 6 buckets and had a huge crop. Can’t wait to harvest them in another month this years potatoes.

Thank you very much! We grew sweet potatoes in grow bags last year and the rats ate most of them. Thats why we planted our potatoes in raised beds this year. And apparently we dodged “most” of the rats this year. Tip of the hat to you and heres wishing you a plentiful harvest!!👍

Thanks for subscribing! We had some brown leaves and they were laying over pretty good. What drove me to harvest was seeing several poking through the ground and knowing it was going to rain pretty good for about a week. I figured I better get them out. The onions came out the very next day.

This would be the first time I have tuned into your channel. Please take some constructive critisism or just plain old good information from an old farmer. Love your enthusiasm. Looks to me what you omitted to do is to hill up your potatoes. When your plants are 3 to 5 inches high, take a hoe and hoe dirt over most of the plant, you may need to do this again as they get bigger then your potatoes are growing up in the dirt that you hilled up opposed to way down deep. Good luck.

Nope. most grew right around the top. Since these were planted in raised beds, we made sure the soil was very loose. BUt to your credit, when I told the wife it was time to harvest potatoes, she said "I'll get the shovel". I said with any luck, we wont need it and sure enough we didnt. I think it pretty much depends on the medium you use to plant them in.

Those little tiny ones are great to use in roast, or just boil whole on the stove top. When the potato has green on it you don't throw it away, you just cut off the green part.

Dont throw out those green potatoes, cure & store like the rest of them) and use them for seed potatoes. Theyll grow perfectly fine. And those little ones can be used as seed too!

We call these red potatoes. The smaller ones are better to boil. The larger ones are good for spring potato salad. It is so good!!!! They're also good cooked with butter beans and or dumplings.

we planted them early in April. They were whole seed potatoes and onion slips. It was our first time growing them both and will most Definitely be planting them again. It was SO worth it!

Mary, I stopped by the Feed Mill on the way home ...Still no seed garlic😠. I did however ask about the potatoes. They were Yukon Gold. I can also tell you I grew them in last years Sweet Potato Grow Bag Soil which I manufactured. Bottom line is the soil was very loose. I think thats why they did so well. I know for sure its tough growing in plain ol' Alabama clay though. We also amended with black Kow. It was hands down the nicest soil I had out here.

@@24to1 I'm growing in raised beds mostly with nice fluffy soil and I also use black kow. I have a few winter crops growing in ground and most of that is for the chickens. They love their greens and they are so easy to grow.

Well, last year it was what we used to “try” and grow sweet potatoes in grow bags. It was a mixture of blood meal potting soil and perlite along with some black kow compost. We had approximately 30, 20 gallon bags. In the end we got about 20 sweet potatoes (thanks to the rodents!). So I emptied those bags into the raised beds, added more black kow compost and bone meal in the hole when we planted and viola!!!! Only 1 of the potatoe beds was that mixture. I grew garlic in the other bed with that mixture. The last 2 beds (white potatoes and onions) were black kow, topsoil, and soul conditioner I got from our local feed store. Explain “ night shade” please.

Nightshades are a family of plants that can contain natural toxins which are not good for animals of humans. Fortunately its almost always in the Foliage and not in the Fruit. For example, Potatoes, peppers, eggplant, and even tomatoes are part of either the Capscium or Solanum families. The foliage has toxins in them and the fruit does not. As a rule of thumb, I usually research the garden trimmings that I plan on feeding either the Pigs, chickens or Sheep I have. That's how I stumbled across Nightshades. As far as Gardening goes.
