❤Sweet Potatoes 🥔 🍠 in November first time buried a variety of about 15 seed sweet potatoes in 15 gallon landscaping plastic barrels/ buckets for next years. Got potatoes from Trader Joe’s and local grocery stores. Anyone that still had roots I put into the buckets with kitchen scraps… morning items like coffee grounds, bananas, egg shells. I also place on top the chicken dropping/hay mix on top then cover with mulched leaves to breakdown. I’ve done that with any normal potatoes as well that were getting eyes over the last three years. The 2-3 gallon landscaping buckets keep producing potatoes 🥔 the bonus is putting the smallest of potatoes and vines back into the buckets and the volunteers keep them coming. Potatoes are so easy.

Interesting approach, We really have sub zero temps here in NY, so I'm not sure that the sweet potatoes would make it but potatoes would i'm sure.

Ohhh sunchokes /Jerusalem Artichokes. This is also a new #prep . Did the same with about a dozen 15 gallon landscaping buckets/ barrels as well. I bought some on line and a few from the grocery store. I’ve read they require even less care… actually more neglect the more they grow. I’ve read during Nazis occupation in France 🇫🇷 in particular. They keep the local residents alive. The Germans collected all the potatoes for themselves and ignored the sunchokes. I’ve read they are very sweet

I just learned that sweet potatoes don't like or need heavily fertilized soil. I would avoid lots of compost or nitrogen. Add bone meal or potash because they are a root vegetable and need potassium more to grow. They like deep sandy loam soil to grow in that isn't frequently watered. Focus on the bone meal, not nitrogen based soil. Good luck next year!

Very good information, thank you and I will definitely mind my nitrogen. Bone meal is an excellent addition for phosphorus and it will only be needed once a year (slow release). I am also thinking of adding a little more “loaminess” to my soil too. You have excellent suggestions.

Oh Sue! Your sweet potato harvest is spectacular! I’ve been waiting for someone to dig their sweets up! It’s been raining here for a week and I’m afraid it’s going to waterlog my sweet potatoes. I hope I have as good a harvest as yours. Your broccoli looks wonderful. Mine looks about the same except we had a hot spell and they only put out little small heads. Oh well, I know broccoli is temperamental. There’s always next year, right?😊

I live in western washington state, Puget Sound. We have a very strange climate. July-sept/Oct. we get very little rain. Almost none this year. By Halloween, it starts to rain and doesn’t stop until or slow down until may/June. The rain is early This year. It’s been raining off and on for a couple weeks now. I hope it dries out soon.

I found that too much fertilizer is not good for crops.

Yes you are right, too much is not good. I am cautious with my additions but I always add compost, especially to the soil where I’ve had heavy feeders.
