Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Sharon Gless, Legendary Emmy & Golden Globe Award Winning Actress, Author, “Apparently There Were Complaints”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s special guest, Sharon Gless, is a beloved, multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actress who’s been dazzling audiences since she became the very last contract player at Universal Studios in 1972.
After distinguishing herself in a number of memorable roles on TV including Kathleen Faverty in Marcus Welby, Maggie Philbin in “Switch”, Sidney Enderman in “Centennial”, Penny Alston in “Turnabout”, and Jane Jeffries in “Housecalls”, she landed the iconic role of Christine Cagney in the groundbreaking TV series, “Cagney and Lacey”, which was the first TV drama with 2 female lead characters, for which she won 2 Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for Best Leading Actress in a Drama Series. She went on to win another Golden Globe Award and 2 more Emmy nominations for her starring role in “The Trials of Rosie O’Neill”.
And then, for 5 glorious seasons, she became immortalized for exemplifying the warmth and loving acceptance of the ideal Mom in another groundbreaking TV show, “Queer as Folk”, which became the #1 show on the Showtime cable network, and forever changed the landscape of how the LGBTQ community was portrayed on television.
After playing Lynn Warner on “The State Within” and the evil Colleen Rose on “Nip/Tuck”, which earned her a 9th Emmy nomination, she gave us yet another Emmy nominated iconic performance, as the chain-smoking, hypochondriac mother from hell, Madeline Westen in “Burn Notice”, which ran for 7 seasons. She continues to deliver outstanding performances on TV in “The Gifted”, “Casualty”, and in the upcoming TV movie “Constance”, and in a feature film being released next year, “Fast Charlie”, co-starring Pierce Brosnan and the late James Caan. In addition to having a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she’s been nominated for 23 prestigious acting awards, including 10 Emmy Award and 7 Golden Globe Award nominations.
And now, her best selling memoir entitled, “Apparently There Were Complaints”, which was released last year, is now coming out in paperback on November 29th. This is a deeply personal, brutally honest and highly relatable book that I simply COULD NOT put down.

Great actress, evidently great person. Loved Cagney and Lacey, essential viewing in our house every week. The humour in the script made this series stand out from other “detective” series 😊

I was addicted to “Cagney and Lacey” and “Queer as Folk” primarily because of Sharon Gless. So can you imagine my thrill when she agreed to appear on our show? The focus of the interview was her book, which was an extremely raw, emotionally turbulent memoir. My challenge was to highlight the book contents without making the interview maudlin, depressing and emotionally difficult for Sharon Gless. I hope I succeeded in revealing a candid, up close and personal glimpse of who this remarkable woman really is.

A real “haymish” interview. You two melded like you’ve been friends for years. Sharon was my hero in Queer As Folk, one of my favorite shows of all time. Her warmth, humour and sensitivity are very evident in your talk. Harvey, you hit this one out of the park, and it’s obvious that Sharon agrees.

This interview was riveting from beginning to end! I haven't watched TV in years, but I did watch Cagney and Lacey and the Trials of Rosie O'Neill faithfully, and I was always absolutely enthralled by Sharon's performances and Tyne Daly's performances as well. Both shows make me reflect on my life in very wonderful ways' especially with regard to Cagney and Lacey. I am much more the Cagney character, but have a longing to integrate more of Lacey's character. I think I would be as close to perfection as is humanly possible if I could achieve this and know that it was genuine, in my own way of course. Thank you so very much! Thank you Sharon!, and I have to thank Tyne Daly as well. This was a very personal interview, and that is how one can gain insights sometimes about ones own life. Thank you Harvey! The flow of this interview was perfection! Lisa

Mike I am delighted that you enjoyed this very special episode of our show. I absolutely loved every moment of my time with Sharon, because as the interview progressed, it felt like we were just 2 friends having an intimate conversation. When that happens, there are moments of real magic. I think those magic moments are what distinguishes our show from all the other interview shows out there.
