Yet, you blame her for the downfall of this relationship! Until Satchie turned 21, Shirley was the adult and should have acted as one! This is a story of child neglect and abuse by both parents! Yet, the child is supposed to understand! Just unbelievable! Shirley got what she sewed! Satchie grew up and has tried to make amends with her parents which fell on deaf ears! Satchie has every right to call a spade a spade! People should stop telling victims to move on when they are deserving of an apology!

I'm 55 and I have just about given up on trying to ever get through to my mother. She was incredibly abusive towards me and still is and refuses to change or even see the damage she has done. People can easily say get over it or move on but severe trauma and abuse leave a residue that never goes away unless a person represses it and that's never a good idea to do. Sadly, abusers rarely if ever change or acknowledge what they've done, it just doesn't happen. Abusers all seem to be just 100% ego and little else, that is why they are abusers, they are incapable of empathy or remorse.

Creata Ann Why do people write novels? Memoirs? Biographies? Autobiographies? Etc. Because most people want to be heard, and share their grief, sorrow, sadness, happiness, regrets, hopes, ideas, thoughts, feelings, achievements...etc. Her book is not something out of the ordinary, it's just her memoirs and thoughts, there are many other books like that. So you're saying that people shouldn't have to write about how they feel or think just because it's inappropriate somehow? And what if a bunch of strangers want to read what other human being wants to say about themselves, their story? Well, guess what? A bunch of strangers did want to read her book because of empathy or maybe even curiosity. Her story is not unique either, generations over generations of humans would keep making the same mistakes over and over again, probably. And there will always be someone out there who feels like you do, and wants to read you, or hear you. And people need money, everyone does, you can't live without it, sadly. So why not sell your creations? Painters do it, writers do it, actors do it...you get the point. I don't see the problem in her trying to make money with that book.

It is nothing less than frightening that Shirley left her 2-year-old daughter on a 2-day plane flight. This should have been downright illegal. So she was worried about her daughter being kidnapped, but not too worried to leave her on her own unsupervised in a plane? Stewardesses can't meet the needs of a 2-year-old.

It WAS illegal but conceited Shirley didn’t care.

I bet the airline agreed that the stewardesses would watch out for h er. Some kids fly today like t hat. I STILL think it was awful, esp at that age.

She could’ve at least hired a freakin nanny to accompany her... in fact that would’ve been the best thing in the world for her - so many nannies have been unintentional surrogate mothers for the wealthy.... I’m surprised that didn’t occur in this situation. It would’ve been better than having TWO neglectful parents. 😞

Oh wow, this is 6 years ago Sachi! First time I saw you through the camera. I didn't even know that you wrote a book about your mom, Sachi!? So good to see your face again and to know that you are a mother of two beautiful children now! It's been almost 30 years ago, we met in CA via my roommate at that time. Thank God, He answered my prayer and let me see you again via KZbin! Praise the Lord! God bless you, Sachi, my beautiful friend with better Japanese than mine! Haha! Love & prayer from Japan

The daughter always has a smile on her face. She is healthy and her sufferings are so minimal in comparison to the underprivileged . In her life of wealth, and opportunity, I don't get it.

I quite like Shirley MacLaine. The Apartment and Sweet Charity are two of my favorite movies. That being said, I don't doubt for a second that everything Sachi says is true.

I don't know where I was when this first came out, but it has totally changed my opinion of Shirley MacLaine. I used to really like her, having grown up in the 60's and always interested in human potential. I even ended up visiting a healing center in one of Shirley's books, "Out on a Limb". This led to my current profession as an energy healer. Sachi, you are a beautiful, brave and courageous person to speak with such poise of your suffering. I recognize the neglect of a narcissist parent. I hope you have surrounded yourself with people who love you as the precious soul that you are...namaste.

RoLorenz: Indeed, we need to have emotional distance in such cases to be able to grasp the multifarious aspects of that mom-daughter relationship in a greater perspective, neither downplaying the daughter´s suffering nor judging Shirley McLane, something that is only possible (or at least emotionally feasible) when we are not carried by the deep emotions and feelings this poignant story stirs in us. Besides, being present is not the only factor needed for a heartwarming and emotionally nurturing relationship with a parent. Actually, if there´s no compatibility between parents and their kids (and this seems to be still valid when the latter ones have grown up), the relationship is bound to become an utter nightmare, where distance would have been the lesser of two evils!

why are people always shocked when a movie star is a bad, or even a horrid, parent? Its common. Being a movie star who is a good parent is rare, especially in Shirley's generation.

NOT MUCH CHANGES,MY MIND ON ANYONE THAT I'VE WATCHED AND LOVED IN MY LIFE BUT NOW IS A DIFFERENT SIDE TO THIS STORY,NO NO ONE SHOULD SLIDE A CHILD AND BE SELF-SERVING AND ESPECIALLY THE MOTHER.I'VE DELT WITH THIS MYSELF AND NOW I AM SEEING WHY CHILDREN ARE BEING SO UNGRATEFUL.

mrlopez2681 It takes intelligence and courage to confront a mom who is a celebrity. It’s difficult to overcome a challenged childhood but Sachi seems to be growing and healing very well. I wish her the BEST❤️.

Why should this daughter protect a mother who never protected her. She has spent a lifetime trying to win the love of a woman who loves only herself. I saw my very loving mother spend her whole life devoted to a mother who openly said I just dont like her I never have I wanted a boy. I can't understand how blind those who write telling her to grow up are. I've worked with troubled youth and have seen my share of damaged children whose parents move on leaving a trail of destruction behind them. Have some compassion for this wo,an who just wants her mother to love her. But in her heart she knows she is incapable.

I read the book, and Sachi Parker has so much common sense and kindness. At no point did she try to ridicule her mother. She showed a lot of insight and empathy with MacLaine, who truly seems like a full on self-absorbed nutcase. Sachi is far nicer about her than I would have been.
