I bought a "starter set" of Henry Taylor tools from Lee Valley. I really enjoy using them, even though I have limited experience. Thank you for the video.

Hi Alex. Thanks so much for the video. I'm using a mix of Pfeil, Ashley Isles and Schaaf. I've also ordered and returned several Henry Taylor tools, specifically from the "Professional" line, the ones with octagonal handles. All were straight gouges and chisels, not backbents or spoons. It seems HT has some quality control problems. Several of the tools were definitely not straight. When looking down the tool, the handles and blades were at angles. How important is it that the handle and blade form a straight line? I know in another video on tools you say that it's important, but also that it's not that big a deal. I'm doing mostly sculpture, but also some lettering. If the tool isn't straight, won't it be harder to keep the tool at the proper angle for mallet strikes, especially stab cuts? I know humans can adjust to just about anything and make it work, so is having straight tools really so important? By the way, I wanted to get Ashley Isles, but their availability is very spotty. I just can't find the sweeps and sizes I want, so I've turned to Henry Taylor. I find Pfeil ok, but for heavier work, Ashley Isles and HT just seem much more robust. Thanks!

Hello Alex, good to see you. I was unable to see you live today. I agree with you that Henry Taylor's are not "pretty" but the "business end" is as good as anything out there. Personally I found that they are slightly more difficult to sharpen but once sharp, hold an edge very well. I attribute this to their being harder steel. Also excellent point about the different manufacturers. They all seem to have that speciality edge that no one else has. As always great video stream and good discussion. Stay well.

We do not have any of these brands in Iran and we only work with handmade tools. I would love to have some of your tools, but unfortunately I can not buy any of them due to US sanctions.

Just a little point...when you say “north america” you know you are referring to mexico also right? even the mexicans don’t know that ....the only mexican state that is not part of north america is chiapas....so for all intents and purposes mexicans are north americans...your skills are amazing...thank you for sharing with us your knowledge...
