Love the video! I’ve been carving for 30 years but finally got serious about it last couple. I’m waiting on a 12 piece set of Addis gouges from an eBay purchase to come along, was glad to hear you mention them. I’ll be checking out your online school with my son!

I've used flexcut for a while now and like them a lot. I have a knife and palm tool set, and also like their knife handle design. I've wanted to try swiss made for a while and it's nice to see someone at your level show the pros and cons. I also love listening to the coffee and carving podcast you have with Doug. Thanks from VA

I use Ramelson gouges. I inherited my set when my father passed. I'm not a very experienced carver but for me Ramelson gouges are everything I need and nothing I don't need.

Thanks! Yes! Pfeil is the name!

Pfeil for me all the way and Lamp Brand as second. I like the professional sized gouges not really a big fan of the stubby sized or palm tools unless I am actually carving linoleum. Pfeil makes a really excellent set of the palm sized linoleum gouges as well. Flex cut and Henry Taylor are my least favorite gouges. I also never use magnet strips to hold my carving tools. I had some gouges become magnetized and I really hate that because it's a huge pain while sharpening because the metal filings stick to the end of the edge. I have maybe 350 carving tools. I've been carving since 1996.

Will it all wipe off easy when magnetized? If so what’s best cloth to use for that?
@claybowser6989 ай бұрын
@@danielmilliken8903 The really fine metal that comes from sharpening is really frustrating to me and doesn't come off very easy at all once the end of the tool becomes magnetized. I use old cotton t shirts to wipe them off but they are certainly a huge hassle. A wire burr comes off pretty easy but it's the real fine powdery metal that drives me nuts. I built several multi tiered racks out of wood that hold all my carving tools and I have them arranged in order of gouge number so no more magnetizing and my gouges are always exactly where they are supposed to be.

Nice talk Alec. Very informative. Swiss Made are most common in our area, we have to head south of the border to get the OCCT which I like to use with bark carving. The Ashley Ilse are very rare and pricey but well worth purchasing when found. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

Based on long, though far less-talented, experience, I completely agree with your assessment of every tool brand you mentioned. The same applies to your final assessment of Swiss Made tools. They are first-rate, well-made tools. They cost a bit more it is true, but their value exceeds their price. Thanks for another helpful video.

Always wear a carving glove. Seriously. The months of rehab after surgery to repair a tendon are just so annoying! And it's so inconvenient to have to take time off from work while you heal, too.

Pfeil (we don’t pronounce the P) is the german name for Arrow…in french we say Flèche ( pronounce Flesh) My favourite brand is the old Dastra. Newer Dastra are now made buy Schmidt in Germany, they also make Two Cherries and Hirsch. All 3 brand are now the same, only the sticker change…

Ashley Iles ... the Iles is pronounced "Eye Less".. They are the first to report that Americans will not buy wood carving tools that are not polished or sharpened. They adapted and were able to sell to America. For stubai and Pfeil. the inner ferrule or collar as you call was designed as requested by many carvers who did not like the metallic feeling of the usual external ferrules on other European brands...

If I could start over I'd go full Ashley Iles fishtail gouges. They're bomb proof the shaft is so much thicker (cough) and tall loads of control. Gouges are like crack, have some massive Stubia like with the black rust proof coating they're beast's if not a bit chippy. Not much of a fan of the PFEIL bright steel but still have more of them then anything else... I'm lost
