With just weeks to go before the UK’s planned exit from the EU, the Irish border issue remains unsolved and a disastrous no-deal departure is still on the table. But has inflexibility in Brussels pushed Brexit talks to a dangerous endgame? Philippe Lamberts, an MEP and member of the European Parliament's Brexit Steering Group, tells DW's Conflict Zonethat the British have responsibility for the Good Friday Agreement and the EU "will decide for what we are responsible.”
Conflict Zone is Deutsche Welle's top political interview. Every week, our hosts Tim Sebastian and Michel Friedman are face-to-face with global decision-makers, seeking straight answers to straight questions, putting the spotlight on controversial issues and calling the powerful to account.

More Brexit on Conflict Zone: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iISWg4JmgN6KrLc Conflict Zone puts the spotlight on controversial issues and going beyond the normal soundbite culture. A robust airing of issues calling the powerful to account. A tough examination of what has gone wrong within the guest’s sphere of responsibility. If that was your goal, you failed. You did an excellent job to have your interviewer repeat the Brexit soundbites. There are probing questions, and then there are questions which are just designed to paint a wrong picture. This is clearly the latter. Plus, I am okay with interrupting people when they lie or try to distract, but that is not what the interviewer was doing. If someone is calmly explaining the situation, you let said person explain. Anything else is just shoddy journalism.

This is absolutely poor. Not only are the opening credits laughable, but the interview is a joke. The interviewer is not interviewing. He is attacking. The same questions are simply going round and round and round. There is no answer, no conclusion to this ‘interview’ and is instead a poor show of journalism. The only ‘conflict zone’ is the poor set of skills used in what could otherwise have been an interesting discussion. Not impressed!

He is also lying. Merkel NEVER said that she would support an extension no matter what. She said that she agrees with Macron (who said that there had to be a good reason for an extension). I realise that Merkel speech is sometimes difficult to understand, but she has been pretty clear about that point.

Not really….thing is, those data bases contain a LOT of sensible data. The UK itself insisted on no third country having access to it for security reasons. And the sad truth is, we can't trust the UK of all countries to handle this data responsible if there are no rules and regulations in place. So, as a citizen of the EU, I would be more upset about the EU allowing the UK free access than about the false notion that selling out our privacy will ensure more protection.

The EU doesn't want to "punish" the UK, it is looking for practical solutions, but with the UK acting like a toddler, it is made pretty much impossible.
@swanpride
@swanpride 5 жыл бұрын
Could have fooled me.... Look, we could have had a Withdrawal agreement two years ago, giving everyone time to figure out questions like security agreements aso. It is mostly because of the stupid brinkmanship of the UK that we are still discussing the Irish border. Which, yes, is a real problem. "We don't want one" is just empty words if one partner of the Good Friday Agreement - the UK - isn't ready to make any arrangements to avoid one. This is not just about the EU, this is about international law and WTO rules, too. And the EU had offered the UK an arrangement in which only Northern ireland stays in the customs union, with goods being checked at the harbour (where food checks aso are already done for health reasons anyway). It was the DUP which kicked up a huge fuss about it, because they ALWAYS hated the Good Friday agreement and didn't want any "border" between Northern Ireland and England. It was the UK which insisted then on a customs union for the whole UK being part of the backstop, and the EU agreed to it even though they didn't really want that arrangement either. Remember, the backstop is just a default solution. It will only because a thing if no other arrangement is found. So if there actually is a technical solution, the UK could easily implement it and say: See, problem solved. Remember when people die of bombs that people like you cheered the situation which lead to it on.
@swanpride
@swanpride 5 жыл бұрын
@Fred Ferneckerpan You can have an open border if there is AN AGREEMENT IN PLACE!!! The UK is about to break both of the agreements designed to ensure the open border and refuses any arrangement which would replace those two agreements.

I was listening to sir Ivan Rogers talk about the mood in Europe immediately after the referendum when the EU-27 were fearing that the UK might attempt some brilliant political moves to try and break up the EU. And then they ended up with Theresa May in charge after other conservatives kneecapped themselves in the party election. They started a timer on themselves by triggering article 50 BEFORE they had any clue as to what they wanted and where they wanted to go exactly. Theresa May in turn hobbled her majority by calling an election and running on a pathetic platform, thus becoming dependent on the DUP. Instead of using experienced diplomats and technocrats, she put the Brexit talks in the hands of buffoons such as David Davis and then Dominic Raab and at some point we even had the chief buffoon Boris Johnson as the Foreign Secretary. I'm gonna fast forward here because it would take me pages to list all the dumb moves the British have made in the past years to screw themselves over and put themselves in a situation that leaves them without many options so yeah, I'm gonna say do your worst @Garry Bastow and the like. Your lot has turned the UK from one of the most respected nations on the planet into a laughingstock in just 2 years. On the bright side, at least their blue passports are made by a French company, their ferries will be handled mostly by European companies, etc. so not all is lost, Europe will take care of the pathetic old senile madam that the UK has sadly now become.

I am all for interviewer pushing, but the question asked shouldn't be polemic and the interviewer shouldn't spread false news. For starters, Merkel said she agreed with Macron, she never said that she was pro extending article 50 no matter what. And how is Greece related to the matter at hand? That is an entirely different topic. And half of what he claimed about Greece was wrong, too. Lamberts was great, but the interviewer really didn't do a got job. Challenging is a good thing, but in order for it to be effective your shots have to be on point.

Third country immigration is not an EU matter per se. It it actually mostly in the hands of the member states. Refugees fall more under the Geneva Convention than anything else. The only EU rule which is kind of relevant to this is the Dublin agreement, which says that EU states can deport to the state of entry - can, not muss - and that the states of entry have to register refugees and asylum seekers (which for example Italy simply has mostly stopped to do).

@@johntowers1213 It is quite ridiculous to assume that the 27 member states send over construction crews or was this aimed to be funny? You never know nowadays what Brits (who have been part of the EU for 40 years) understand about the EU. It is Irish and NI territory. They are the sovereigns of this land. They had to build the customs and border. What the extreme brexiteers enforce with a no-deal is quite sinister. They screw unilaterally the GFA. The UK and Irland have to physically build a hard border or they have to agree on a border on the sea between Irland and England. @@johntowers1213 It's quite simple, Irish goods would probably be subject to border checks on the way to Europe in that case. Said as much in the interview. I'm taking a wild guess here, but I could imagine that would mean controls on the boat as it's quite a voyage from Ireland to the UK or anywhere else in the EU. Not an optimal solution at all, but hardly the same level of disruption that the land border on the island of Ireland would cause as a ferry wouldn't have to be stopped and waved into a lay-by for the customs officers to do their job, assuming the lightest-touch alternative solution on the island of Ireland. Not in the spirit of the Single Market but not exactly a death-blow either. It would be deeply frowned upon of course, but eventually tolerated. We had the same with the Danish and their border. As to what happens on the island of Ireland, there is nothing much the EU can do about it on the island if the UK and Ireland refuse to install infrastructure, which hopefully they will.

The WTO does not tell countries what to do other than to keep their promises (abide by the WTO agreements and their WTO commitments) Even when countries break their WTO promises, there is no “confrontation” with “the WTO” and least of all with “WTO officials” The WTO is member-driven. If in the future other WTO countries believe the UK is violating an agreement, it is they, not the WTO bureaucracy, who will act. They can do so by complaining in a WTO meeting or filing a legal challenge in WTO dispute settlement Since there is no WTO rule requiring governments to secure their borders, failing to do so would not break any specific agreement

@@alexanderhowarth6460 UK is special and I love it but you should really come down from your pedistal and accept that the EU has a much bigger international standing. The queen might formally be head of state of other countries and infact they are, act and get treated as other countries. Ask the windrush people how you get treated as a queen's subject in her kingdom. Also there is a good chunk of the world that still bears some risentiment toward the empire but sure that doesn't count. The common law is the basis of a third of world legal systems (all former colonies), could be argued that roman law has a bigger influence on modern law but sure none of the two can be considered at the basis of "modern civilization (what does that mean exactly btw?). Your culture is peculiar, lovely and worlwide famous but doesn'tappear to me to be emulated much outside of uk, maybe you're confusing with america? Finally english is the business language but I wouldn't bet is the most used. Apparently that's mandarin and spanish amigo!

You're right, the deal is bad. The negotiations with the EU on permanent relations would take a decade, the deal ends in 2020 which mean a constant crisis in the commons over extensions. However, there is no scenario of the UK doing great, even JRM said it would take a century to see the benefits of Brexit. Though JRM will see the benefit of not being tied to EU regulations on his finances and perhaps bringing serfdom back or whatever the Dickensian Villains' society that he heads will find fitting. The idolisation of so many Germans and other European peoples of their political class is a very great worry. I see from many comments that some people even imagine that Tim Sebastian is something beyond the controlled opposition. It is a wonderful thing to watch an audience cheer, rage and cry in the presence of a Kabuki show, imagining that what they are witnessing is reality, and therefore that their reactions are also part of reality.
Why is anti-immigration sentiment on the rise in Canada?
