We first saw the prototype of the EA1, or Dolphin, during the BYD factory tour a few months ago, and now Elliot takes one out for a drive to see if this could well be the best small, affordable electric car around.
This is a well-built, all purpose little city car built on BYD's new 3.0 Ocean platform and using blade batteries, one of the safest battery options available. The design is sharp and funky and, while some of the features might be a little basic, this car is full of cool tech including vehicle to load capability, and delivers amazing value for money.
BYD are working at speed to get these cars to market with the EA1 confirmed as the first city car that will get sent overseas. With legacy car manufacturers like VW announcing their affordable and small electric cars won't be available until 2025, in the race to transition the masses to electric, BYD will be hard to catch.

Great review, Elliot gets it right again. The review is spot on, I think many people just want a car, not loads of gadgets and not hyper-performance. If this came to New Zealand it would flood the market as NZ$30,000 won't even get you a 2018 used 40kWh Leaf yet. Price point is good, looks are good, features are fine.

Totally agree - Elliot gets it right again in this review. The price is reasonable, the appearance is appealing, and the features are adequate. @inzana2
@inzana2 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm in NZ and this is the first electric car I have seen that starts to tick boxes for me (compact, good range, cheap). Apart from the mediocre Leaf, Euro, Korean and Japanese manufacturers seem fixated on huge and expensive electric SUVs, presumably because that is what is popular in the ICE car market. It would make economic sense to buy one of these over a much cheaper second hand ICE car with much higher running costs, potentially expanding the new car market and destroying second hand ICE resale value.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on what's happening with CDM EV's. I fully expect Chinese brands to take big chunks out of the legacy automakers, Tesla included; 25 years ago no-one imagined Kia/Hyundai would dethrone Nissan or Honda and look where we are now. Currently looking at an EV for intra-city stuff and something like the Dolphin would be perfect (would keep the turbo diesel Fiesta for the long drives). Only china has enough free space to scale battery production. As they claim they are about 10% utilizing their space because they're actually keeping up with the demand. Unless europe buys all their batteries from china, the Legacy brands dont have a chance to build enough battery plants themselves before they're bankrupt. They already are massively battery limited even if they can sell their EV models.

Absolutely awesome city car for the price, and if it can do 400km on the 44.5kw/h battery it's pretty much good to go in terms of road trips in Europe. I really like the design language and the rotating screen is a real winner if they get Netflix or the like on it. Hell even a decent web browser would do, then use a wifi hotspot to watch rv shows or KZbin vids. If it's under 25k US and it comes to Australia, I would seriously consider getting one for a daily runabout. The 0-60 time was a bit naff, considering it only does 0-50km/h in 3.9 seconds, so I'd expect 11 sec 0-60mph but still as long as it can get up to speed without feeling like a moped, it'll do ok.

Watching the excellent Fully Charged reports from China, and other reviews of the Chinese cars coming to Europe, my conclusion is that legacy car makers are toast. When Chinese manufacturers start exporting in quantity they will own the market. VW might make it through and Tesla will own the luxury space inhabited by BMW and Mercedes. It will happen quite quickly as well.

Nice, small _city car_ for those short journeys to the school, shops, etc. One minor gripe is the charge port cover that hangs down; just looks clumsy and would cause a stain or mark on the bodywork in a storm whilst charging. Extremely enthusiastic about the AE-1/Dolphin & BYD. I love that BYD put the money into battery & safety tech, & defied the trend by having manual door handles, a manual filler cover, manual boot release & close etc to bring a fantastic price for the masses. Automatic air purifier is one of the standard configs installed in BYD cars since 2017, or maybe 2018. It's great to have and could be a good plus to health, but, it's a bit annoying that if you config it as Automatically ON, which means it starts working when the sensor detects the air in the car and feels like it should do something, it will ask you in a dialog box in the screen at the control console. You have options for turning it on or off, but the thing is, if you are driving in a highway at around 130 kmh (still legal in China, 132 is the actual upperthreshold), or get stucked in a continuous traffic jam, you might want to concentrate instead of getting distracted by this notification from air purifier. --Owner of BYD Song Pro DM.

Also BYD's debut vehicle in Australia is now slated to be not the EA1 but instead the small SUV model named the *Yuan Plus,* in *April 2022.* Unfortuanetly, the current state of the EA1 plans in Australia are that _"a revised timeline for the cheaper EA1 has not been announced." - Drive Website._ But i'm still crossing my fingers.

The base model costs rmb94000, with rmb13000 china ev subsidies already subtracted (currently no vat on chinese evs). So the car costs rmb107000=14400€, but there is still a 10% EU import tax plus VAT missing. So 14400€*1,1*1,19=18850€ before subsidies. The big battery model costs ~rmb120000 and gets rmb18000 subsidies, so the European price should be around 25000€. In Germany with the 6000€ ev grant we could get the better 45kwh version for 19-20k Euro. The VW id3 pure did cost around 22000€ while you could order them early this year.

I've watched this video once on My own and a second time with my Wife. She now really understands the importance of such a fantastic car like this and the difference it will make for the 'Electric Car' market worldwide. Especially at this affordable price. We now all await the Dolphin's arrival? Well done BYD!

Interesting vid, looks like a very practical EV. You guys should do a comparison between the EA1 and the Aptera EV. These two will probably sell for roughly the same amount - with the full solar or PV options, that Aptera will do 40 miles (64 km) on just solar alone.

The Aptera base price is now US$25900, so it is a much more expensive vehicle. By the way, without the rear solar hatch (which most people won't buy because it obstructs the back view), the range from solar charging is 22 miles per day.

@@amosbatto3051 Thanks, Amos, that's interesting. Weren't they going to put cameras on the side of the vehicle instead of mirrors? They did say they would need approval for that. 22 miles per day is still impressive range.

Really like this, very European Market looking, reminds me of a mix between a slightly older Toyota Yaris and a Citreon DS. Interior looks good and seems to have relevant tech and not just tech for techs sake. Hope it comes over to the UK, think this wud sell really well. People are a lot more open to new brands with the increasing electric market.

Quick UK question about the V2L. What happens with earthing? I know some items require an earth and the UK grid/houses offer that. Are there risks with earth leakage using V2L when it's coming from a car with rubber tyres? Would that mean the 'earth/ground' would be YOU, the human? (esp in wet conditions). What safeguards would it need? Or is it just not an issue?
