In 1950 Brazil were struggling to qualify behind Yugoslavia in their group (only group leaders progressed) and a Yugoslav player was injured taking the field before their match with Brazil. The Maracana was still being built, and players had to cross a building site to reach the playing area, where the injury took place; however the bent Welsh referee refused to allow the injured player to immediately go to the changing room for treatment. The Yugoslavs were told the team all had to attend the National Anthems, and the injured player went for treatment AFTER the game had started. Brazil had scored before Yugoslavia got their full 11 on the field. The referee's subsequent remarks about 'communist' officials trying to tell him how to run a game do indicate political bias.

I heard a horrific story about the Argentine junta during the '78 Cup. After Argentina's semifinal victory, the military put some of their political prisoners in cars and drove around Buenos Aires. Even though the prisoners were plainly visible through the windows of the cars, people were celebrating Argentina's win so much they didn't notice them. The junta then told the prisoners, in effect, "See? They don't care about you!"

Hi Alfie, Loved the video, but the section around 8:46 regarding face offs between Italy and England is highly misleading. 2 of the victories were 10+ years after the '38 world cup, so they are not exactly relevant to that WC edition. The only England victory over Italy somewhat close to the '38 world cup was in '34, where they famously broke the Italian central defenders foot in the second minute and scored all 3 goals in the first 12 minutes, when he was just casually walking around the pitch with a broken foot, because his team players did not know about his injury; subs were also not permitted. In addition, you mention that Austria was regarded as one of Europe's strongest teams, still they lost 4 of the 6 matches against Italy in the 1930s, among which the final of the 1936 summer olympics that Italy won as well. As per the use of Italians born in Argentina, it seems like stricter rules prohibiting switching of national teams were only introduced in the 60s, so them playing for Argentina first and for Italy a couple of years later was not illegal, since they did hold Italian citizenship.

As an American fan, I'm pretty happy to see USA '94 given one of the best scores in this list and I tend to agree, that there's been little conversation about corruption related to that tournament, other than the "why did you award the tournament to such a soccer minnow" pre-tournament sentiment. But once the teams, fans and officials got here, they realized that the reason you do that is that the US, of all countries, had the facilities and the know how to put on such an event and all of that talk was quickly forgotten when they saw the size and enthusiasm of the crowds that attended. The fact that Major League Soccer was born out of it and that the US has a much, much stronger team, player development structure and soccer culture in the aftermath was one of the great successes of that endeavor.

WC 1994 was indeed corrupt. Brazil should've been eliminated by the Netherlands but the ref went out of his way to award them a very dubious victory on goals scored after an offensive foul was ignored as well as two offsides (one of them so obvious, a blind man would've given it). In the semis, the ref again ignored an obvious offensive foul to allow Brazil to score against Sweden. As for the final: Italy had to cross an entire continent and play Brazil (who stayed in California) at 12:00 noon! The officiating at WC 1994 was the worst until 2002.

For the 1958 WC, there is also the story of the Algerian players of France that is interesting. The Algerian War began 4 years prior, but in France, the media minimised what was happening, so a few days before the WC began, 9 Algerian players who played for France (+1 who was arrested at the border with Italy), went to Tunisia instead to play for the team of the National Liberation Front (FLN), the main organisation who fought for Algerian Independence, some willingly, such as Rachid Mekhloufi, but other, such as Moustapha Zitouni a bit less (he was willing to go, but also scared of the consequences). The French press didn't talked about them, the French Federation (FFF) pressured FIFA into banning other teams to play against this Algerian team, to no avail since they played in a competition against other Maghreb countries. Those countries were also having troubles to register in FIFA competitions because of French pressures. Another story, much darker, about Algeria is some consequences for the players of '82, who after being injustly eliminated, were given strange substences by a Soviet doctor during the competition, that, alleged by those players, led to many of their children to being born with disabilities. Such sad stories for a team that saw really good players and moments (such as the WC 2014, and the match they nearly won against Germany)

This was an excellent video. Imagine us Austrians potentially being double world cup winners 🙈. That would probably have changed the whole perception of the sport here and set us up for continued success over the years. 19:31 this time period sounded weird to me as I was sure he was FIFA president when I was a kid, so I looked it up: he was president from 74 to 98, not 88. Regarding Gijon 82: this does not fit the term "fixed" in my opinion. Fixed means that the outcome was predetermined by participants actively working towards a certain outcome. For Gijon 82 both teams knew that a certain result would mean that they both would progress and when that result came to be they decided to not exert themselves to change it. Was it a disgrace? Yes. Was it fixed? Possibly but not certainly. If that means "literally fixed" for you then the Spain vs Japan group match at the ongoing 2022 world cup was also fixed since Spain decided they did not want to win the group in order to get into the easier side of the bracket (not that it did them any good) and they basically lost to Japan on purpose and thus knocked Germany out of the tournament in the process. FIFA really needs to change that teams know in advance how the bracket will look like after the gtoup stage. They need to have a playoff draw after the group stage like the champions league has.

There is funny story to the aftermath of the 1982 final: each German team member was entitled to an award: (Bundesverdienstkreuz zweite Klasse) Order of Merit 2nd Class for reaching the finals. Even in Germany, particularly after the non-game against Austria and the brutal foul by Schumacher against Battiston in the semi-final, the mood was such that should they get the reward, the Italian team should get the Order of Merit 1st Class for stopping the Germans ...

Some minor corrections / points: The 1930 referee was not "made aware of his mistake", he had no option but to restart the match as he caused a minor riot. Add to 1934, opponents of Giuseppe Meazza were not impressed with his over physical approach during matches and complained to no avail, another helping hand for Italy to win the tournament. It is said to be rumour that Turkey qualified as a result of a blindfolded boy drawing them out, FIFA's official stance is that it was decided by coin toss. However if you check their website now on their factsheet, it does say that it was done by Luigi Franco Gemma, so FIFA may have changed their stance on that one over time. The injections West Germany took in 1958 were later found to be an amphetamine called Pervitin. This was discovered via an investigation commissioned by the German authorities and conducted by Leipzig University 50 years later. Before Sindelar's death, he scored against Germany and celebrated wildly in front of the watching Adolf Hitler...

Being a Hungarian, let me add some spice to the 1954 final. When the hungarian team arrived back by train to Hungary, they have decided to leave the train several stations before arriving to Budapest, as there was a crowd near-riot state accusing the Government sold the match to Germany (days before, in the group phase of the tournament, Hungary beat Germany 7-2. That's for the record.). My grandpa was working as a policeman by the time, he was one of the policeman ordered to hold back the crowd. Also, he was there when several brand new West German (do not forget, Germany was devided by then) luxury limousines arrived to one of the Ministry of State a few weeks after the final... No one knows now, what has really happened back then and the causes, but maybe I would move that meter a bit to the red side. ====== Another bit of spice, the uprising finally happened two years later, in 1956...
@marcosbremermann8702 жыл бұрын
In 1954, you forgot that a player literally died on the pitch and came back to live. Hojberg, a Uruguayan player tied the game against Hungary after being 2-0 down with just minutes to go. After scoring, and the fatigue that all that caused, the player fell on the floor and when the medics got to him, he was at the moment declared dead. However, he somehow came back to life a few seconds later and refused to leave the pitch, coming back to play the Extra time. Effort that wasn't enough as Uruguay would lose 4-2 to Hungary in extra time

I don't think anything is deliberately fixed beforehand because there are too many things left to fate on the pitch that you can't control. However, the host nation at a World Cup has always had an advantage, not only playing in front of the home crowd but also the pressure it puts on referees. They also normally have a relatively easy first round draw and if assistance is needed it is usually provided; for example, England playing all their games at Wembley and West Germany in 1974 playing their decisive second round match on a pitch that was disadvantageous to their opponents, instead of postponing it.

No one talks about it because there's nothing to talk about. You could also wonder why the nation that gave the game to the world and has the most popular domestic league in the world is routinely passed over for hosting the tournament. Mexico', Germany and France have hosted more than England. If there's any bias from FIFA it's against England. You may have had a point if an English referee umpired an England game. You must be the only person on the planet that's touted this "conspiracy" or you're probably just an Anglophobe. And before you mention the third goal in the final and potential bias from a Russian linesman against the Germans well maybe the German teams dads should have refrained from invading the Soviet Union in 1942 and murdering his people. Come on, the 66 WC was not a clean win, England and Germany basically helped each other pave an easier road to the final, where they met and England had the final advantage by having two irregular "goals" allowed to stand. It is not clear, if England would have won without that advantage, just as much as it is not clear if Germany would have won in 2010 in Bloemfontein where a regular goal was not given for England. We will never know. I am not an Anglophobe for pointing this out, just as much as i don't hate Italians, but the 34' WC was clearly dodgy as hell. That does not mean i condone the Third Reich attacking other nations, but then again saying a nation deserves to have refereeing decisions go against them for crimes of their ancestors - as you seem to argue - may not be so smart considering what the UK did all over the world throughout history. As if someone can change or is to blame for what their fathers or grandfathers did, that is an extremely weak argument. I for one am not blaming current Brits for any of the crimes during colonial times, but considering the English for hundreds of years pillaged, raped and murdered their way through half the globe, events from which many former colonies have not recovered even today, the 'historical karma' argument might not be a smart point to make, from an English perspective. So maybe this is not the way to put it. As for hosting rights, considering England has probably the best or at least among the best footballing infrastructure in the world, it is about time England or the U.K. to host another big tournament. But then again, this is not necessarily connected. It is unfortunate that FIFA does not award hosting rights to well equipped countries, but it's all political. If politics would not be as shitty as it is today, only free democracies would host the WC, and not corrupt states or repressive regimes. I personally think Australia or India should host a WC, or they could do a pan-continental WC in Europe, Africa or Asia but only allow small nations to host matches, nations that never hosted any WC or Euros and probably never will on their own.

When talking about WC 2010 everyone forgets to mention that in the final, the play prior to iniesta scoring, the Dutch should have been awarded a corner kick. Not a big mistake by itself but it had massive consequences.
@mafiousbj2 жыл бұрын
But the Dutch robbed the game against Uruguay in the semifinals. I remember Van Bommel kicked almost every Uruguay field player and wasn´t even booked until literally the 90+3 minute of the game. That game together with De Jong not being shown the red card after kicking Xavi Alonso in the chest would have made for a far more controversial WC if Netherlands had won. But after seeing this video and remembering that game I´m certain they wanted two teams with no prior championships to meet in the finals (making the first African WC a bit spicier ^^)

Seems kind of funny that Messi, Ronaldo, and Neymar all opened their scoring accounts in this World Cup via dubious penalties in this World Cup..... none of those looked like penalties, but hey gotta get the big stars on the score sheet somehow...
@AholeAtheist2 жыл бұрын
The Messi one was a penalty I thought. But yeah, the Ronaldo one was definitely dodgy. I didn't really pay much attention to the Neymar one, even though I was watching, but it didn't stick out to me. One thing I think does stick out to me is the "upsets" in this tournament. Which I think can be explained by better technology and refereeing processes which has meant that the refs don't have as much of an unwitting bias towards the "better" teams. Although to me some bias decisions are still getting through, like Ronaldo's penalty.

I have something to add regarding the 1954 worldcup. The first time the germans played against hungary they only played with their reserve players, because they knew they would probably advance to the knockout stage regardless. in the final the germans played with more modern shoes. their shoes had cleats and didn´t gain as much weigh during the rainy match
@vampireducks16222 жыл бұрын
The officiating in 1966 was certainly very suspect. Not just the final (Hurst's two non-goals in ET, of which the first didn't cross the line and the second was during a pitch invasion), but other matches too. Two English referees ensured that defending champions Brazil were dumped out of the competition at the group stage (Pele received no protection at all and had to be stretchered off). Then in the quarter-finals a German referee officiated England v Argentina while an English referee officiated West Germany v Uruguay, which ensured the remaining two South American teams were eliminated (in the England game Argentine captain Antonio Rattin was sent off in a particularly bizarre piece of refereeing...).

The ball was just over the line and it was known back then, but you have to see the high definition movie film from ground level looking straight along the line and not from an angle, which does exist but has rarely been shown in documentaries. You cannot make a decision based on the fuzzy black and white TV pictures that are always shown, as the image is just not clear enough. Referees have always used their discretion to allow play to continue when people encroach on the pitch during play, as at the 1972 European Championship final when hundreds of Germans were on the pitch.

The World cup 2022 was the most Rigged tournament in History
@inlimboed912 жыл бұрын
12:05 You missed one of the maddest things about the 1954 World Cup. The groups of four had 2 seeded teams who didn't play each other, so each team only played twice (like, in this WC Spain and Germany would only play Japan and Costa Rica, but not play each other). With no goal difference etc. teams tied on points would play a playoff to decide who went through, so Germany (unseeded, which in itself was stupid as a much weaker Turkey team got the seed), who hammered South Korea in the first game, fielded a complete reserve side in their second game against Hungary because they banked on beating Turkey in a playoff. This meant they'd finish second in the group and avoid Brazil in the quarter-final and Uruguay in the semi. Germany's final victory over Hungary was still a shock, but not as much as the group stage scoreline suggests. It's also just a batshit crazy format given there was a week between the final group stage games and QFs to accommodate the playoffs, so why not just have 3 group games?

The biggest fix that I remember was in 78. The game Argentina national team vs Peru national team. Argentina need it 5 goals to advance against Peru and at half time game was tie 0x0 and was a very close game; second half Peruvian players stop attacking and Argentina score the goals that they need it to advance. Coincidence the goalie from Peru was Quiroga and Argentinian playing for Peru national team. Definitely some happened at half time break in the dressing rooms. The Victory by Argentina made them advance on goal difference against Brazil 🇧🇷 and what is still amazing Brasil was the only undefeated team team with more points and never got to the final game. Go figure? End of the story..Argentina beat Holland in the final and won their first WC.

You are wrong in everything, Argentina needed a 4 goal difference victory, at half time Argentina was winning 2-0 and not only Peru had a lot of chances and a hit in the post, there wasn't one but two penalties that were not awarded for Argentina. And last but not least, until this day a lot of Peruvian players at the time say that nothing weird happened that day.
