Edit: Lots of you have mentioned that the powders are a finishing powder. I have used my dim and diffuse light as finishing powders before and I thought they were okay. I have also used the Charlotte Tilbury airbrush flawless powder as a finishing powder. A traditional setting powder can be used as a setting and finishing powder, but the hourglass are clearly not the case here. I will film a little reel with my thoughts after more testing. 👍🏻 Forgot to mention that the loose setting powder from hourglass is also shimmer glimmer city 🤪 also watch until the end for an outtake and rant 😂

I agree that it's not matte, but girl... you have beautiful, youthful skin. Take my word for it (someone who is probably 2 decades older than you)... once your skin becomes more mature you will be throwing all your talc/corn starch based, moisture sucking, wrinkle emphasising powders out the window. Those shimmer particles (aka mica) and the absence of oil absorbing ingredients will do optical wonders on your skin and you will find new appreciation for that formula. As for the palettes, I completely agree with you - overhyped, overpriced and hella boring.

The “finishing” powders are NOT meant to be used for setting. They are finishing powder. They meant to be used on top after the makeup to blend and blur everything with a soft glow. If you use it as a setting powder I think the glow particles will be settling into the pores.
@Aijingaling2 ай бұрын
Hmmmmmm that’s a valid point. I have used them like that but I felt like the effect was negligible

Came to say that too @girlswear. Finishing powders are not setting powders. It’s meant to seamlessly blend or soften makeup looks for a polished look.

@@Aijingaling I have tried using the finishing powder as setting and finishing powder. And didn’t notice much of a difference. I am close to 50 and I don’t want so much powder on my face. And moreover after the whole makeup is done who wants shimmer all over the face.. not me 😂, in the end, I just had to throw one of their full sized finishing powders. I have 2 of their full size marbled blushes , issue with their marbled blushes is that it seems to be mixed with some finishing powders. I am south Asian medium skin tone, these turn weird Ashy on me. And I had picked darker shades.. hence I don’t enjoy them. For that price, Pat, Chanel , Guerlain have better blushes. Even their lighter ones don’t turn ashy.. no more hourglass for me

I 100% agree that these Hourglass palettes are overhyped. I've tried them, and they never work out for me. I probably should be the medium palette, but the shades are always off. Usually the bronzers are too warm, and even though this year they're cooler, the blushes are always the wrong shades for me. The highlighters also are usually too dark. I can't justify buying any more of these palettes because of the cute packaging, when my individual blushes/bronzers/highlighters are better. It seems like influencers push these palettes in part because they're cute (though I'm tired of the printed packaging and want something more elegant next) and in part because they're promoting this fantasy lifestyle where you'll be jet-setting off to a vacation and need everything in one palette. In reality, you can just bring a bronzer and blush you already own. Lastly, I have the diffused light finishing powder, and I like it for an everyday look. But I recently used it for an event where there was overhead lighting. And the glowy finish of the powder, combined with the lighting, made my entire face look super shiny. Not flattering. I'm going to pass on these palettes this year, and I appreciate your honest review so I don't waste my $100 on fake hype!

I see a lot of people arguing with you about setting VS finishing powders, but I don't think things need to be so complicated in today's makeup world. Finishing powders used to have a purpose back when we were all wearing full coverage matte foundation with pigmented blush and bronzer powders on top; it did help to use a finishing powder to buff/blend all the color products into the full coverage foundation while adding a bit of a glow (which was nice since everything was matte back then). Nowadays, finishing powders are kinda useless with the popular minimalist looks people have been gravitating to. Also, you should be able to wear a finishing powder by itself on your skin 100%, I have the Chantecaille Gel Powders, and they look fantastic and don't settle into lines or pores, unlike the tiny sparkles in many Hourglass powders. I do have 2 Hourglass bronzers. Still; one is completely matte and actually very nice and buildable on the skin. The other is a better color for me, but it has those tiny shimmer particles, so it'll look fine at home, but as soon as I go into the sun, it's like I have a bunch of microscopic glitters all over (though it's the most obvious when I use it on my neck).

I do like the hourglass for the luminosity and I don't expect them to be overly matte I use them for a subtle glow once I've set everything. They're obviously not what your after or don't suite your routine, preference or skin tone . I can't use matte products on my mature skin it just looks so flat and dead and oddly enhances my texture everyone's skin is different especially once your in your 40's. Also the loose hourglass is my OG for that certain purpose. Everyone is different.

Thank you for taking the time to comment Kelly! I used the new dragon (light) palette as a finishing powder today, while it is better overall, it is still not what I want and certainly not worth the money for me. 😊 but no product will be liked by everyone and a lot of people in the comments are saying it’s better for more mature skin. ☺️

I really love your honest and detailed reviews ❤. I do agree with some comments about this being a finishing powder rather than a setting powder. I personally have oily skin and although I have to use matte products, I love to have glowy makeup without being oily. I have just ordered the volume 4 palette because I have dark skin, still on it's way. I often wish I can find reviews that compare hourglass to other products but most KZbinrs just keep saying there is nothing like it😅. The same was said about Charlotte Tilbury hollywood flawless filter. l bought it online without trying because it's not available in my country, Nigeria. And I can definitely say there is truly nothing like it, it is the first highlighter that doesn't really have visible shimmer, and I have tried many. Of course now there are dupes of it but am very glad I got it. I also remember some people saying the Charlotte Tilbury hollywood flawless filter was just like any liquid highlighter like Mac strope creams, but I have both, they aren't the same at all. Mac strope cream has tiny shimmer particles. Its beautiful but it's definitely not the same. So am hoping the hourglass finishing powder will live up to my expectations.

My Palette finally arrived (its actually the volume 3 trio) . I do love it but it definitely didn't live up to my expectations. I think depending on the formula of the powders, you can definitely see the shimmer if you very closely, but you do have to look very close. The palette has 2 ambient lighting powders and 1 highlighter. I knew I wasn't going to like the highlighter very much because I wanted 3 finishing powder. Now that it is here, I really don't like the highlighter. I always hear that hourglass highlighter is very subtle. But to me it's just a regular highlighter. Nothing special about it. In fact it looks just as smooth as some of my eyeshadows. So I wish they just gave us a third finishing powder. I love the finish of transcendent light which has more of a satin finish. Eternal light is very sparkly. I do like it but you can definitely see the shimmer and they are not finely milled. The powders were very smooth and silky, very luxurious feeling. I use transcendent lights as a bronzer. And I use eternal light as a highlighter. I wish they gave us another finishing powder with transcendent light formula but lighter shade for under the eyes. I definitely think that it's similar to any powder that has some shimmer in it. These are usually glowy bronzers. So if you have dark skin you might actually find your shade in any brand that has glowy bronzers like Guerlain or Armani or RMS etc. I actually have a bareminerals glowy bronzer called Warmth, that functions exactly like Eternal light finishing powder. It's shimmer particles are much smaller than hourglass so even less detectable.

It is so important to only buy a palette if the majority of the shades work for you. The Ambient Lighting edit Volume 4 was perfect for me and I panned the Bronzer and the Dim light with significant usage in the other pans. The Ghost Edit is barely touched so I haven’t bought another palette but I have a trio of finishing powders. For me it’s not so much about Light/Medium/ Dark but about undertones and how I like to do my makeup on my mature skin. I have cool toned medium mature skin and prefer a flattering minimal make up look. The finishing powders and products in the right tones are stunning. The Dragon palette appeals to me now after watching multiple reviews. Again it’s the undertones and my Volume 4 is old. It’s my travel Palette of choice because you get a full look as I also use it on my eyes.
