So get your facts checked...also reservation are available only in government jobs which does not account for even 10% of jobs available in India! ~ FYI the food welfare schemes that you talking about is always based on economic criteria. You have a ration card, you are below poverty line then you get these services. I have never heard that one got food grains from government cause they belong to a particular caste! ~ FYI NCRB provides no such data about crime against upper castes. But their 2020 report states that crimes against dalits rose by 9.4% ~ You are talking about food delivery?? 97.25% of people involved in manual scavenging whose caste data is known as SC. Something that the upper caste won't even consider doing. Your entire comment is full of lies! I'm a dalit girl and whenever I go to visit my aunty's house which is in kanpur(city) , a Thakur family lives right next to us. So we can enter their house but they never enter ours. once I remember that their daughter accidentally entered our house they threw gangajal on her before she could enter her house. Which shows that they think that Dalits are dirty people. So yes caste system is well alive in rural India as well as the cities.

Sometimes I greet him saying Jai Parshu(shortform for Lord Parshuram) and he greet me by Jay Bhim bhava(bro). We ate each other's tiffin. And do all best friends stuffs. At the same time, we both got threatened(not that seriously) by our own community's guys to break friendship with each other. So all in all, there's good people everywhere, but there's bad people too. This needs to be talked about. I was born and raised in the US and while my family never really mentioned our caste, over time I have been exposed to it and it is crazily followed here. For example in my city there are two gurdwaras right in front of one another because more 'lower caste' people were going to the first one and the upper caste people wanted their own gurdwara-- not to mention a vital part of Sikhism's creation was to eradicate caste. Later on when I went to university this caste issue further came up as students would openly say 'we don't hang out with this person because they are not Jatts, or Reddy's-- we Iyengars are different from Iyers' to this point- I had never known that casteism is this prominent that too in the US. Now that I am working I get to see news articles that there is casteism here in the hiring process of companies, and that some girl in grade school was forced to move to a different school because other children were making fun of her for being a lower caste. There was also a case in the early 2010s where a higher caste girl wanted to marry a lower caste boy and the boy's family came to the girl's home with swords to threaten the girl to break her ties with the boy. All in all casteism is insane and illogical, it is a part of culture that needs to be buried. Even for those religious bigots, if they read their religious texts properly (which I have) they would know that this 'caste' is a human made construct.

I always heared people criticising SC/ST/OBC reservation but never heared them questioning EWS. Many even forget that so called upper caste also has reservation. If you go really want to know ground reality then please go to any SC/ST persons of young age & ask about the educational background of their parents even if they are educated it must be through economic hardship in addition to caste- based humiliation in school as well as in colleges, ( even in medical colleges, I know people who faced it in form of different mess for lower and upper caste) forget about their grandparents who were not only denied to get education but a fair wage for their work/ jobs.So with such weak foundation how can you expect that there is level playing field??? I have seen the difference between the environment and wisdom childern get in families of both upper and lower caste ... Just go check datas of percentage of ST/ SC holding in decision making posts in govt. ,Crime percentage against SC/ST on basis of caste, Leave the matter of level playing field ,even a groom is not allowed to sit on horse on his wedding day ! In Cities I have never seen Caste discrimination, but in villages, it exists though the people talk nicely with all caste people,but I have noticed that whenever the I go into shops or anyplace, they don't handover the things to my hand or on table, instead they put it on the ground but for others they give handover to them, milk can, products or whatever just because my ancestors where Scheduled caste people or Harijans before they converted into Christianity and my sc people always live in this state. And when I went to my village there people almost live in the untouchability period, SC people in my village have restrictions of which street they have to walk, they're not supposed to buy upper caste locality houses even with the full money because they don't allow SCs into their streets. The upper caste took a further step in attempting to demolish my under construction house so that no lower caste person ever gets to live in big prime location house. As a person who grew in Hyderabad and Chennai where I haven't seen the slightest Discrimination, to see my village living in old days, having faced the discrimination my self, I am really shocked and saddened to this reality the reality here. Inter Caste marriages are not possible ever. Well my village is in Andhrapradesh, and caste, caste politics are in full fledged operation here.

I am from U.P. , there are villages differentiated on the basis of castes and named accordingly, even those people are now rich and educated they still can't sit on the same table with the upper castes, they call it respect because they helped them but they know the real reason. I live in a "Brahmin" family that is supposedly the highest of all Brahmins and the way my family looks down on other casts just disgusts me, not just that, all the other supposedly "lower casts" look up at us with respect and come to our family for religious matters like kundali, panchang, katha n all, while keeping their distance... I'm not denying that caste-based inequalities don't exist. Tbh, I have never seen anything happening closely . But I truly believe that our generation would create a revolution in this social front. I have never heard anyone from my generation talk about lower caste people negatively or treat them badly. There were a lot of people from different castes in my college and everyone treated each other with the utmost respect. We never asked anyone's caste because no one cared about that. All we cared about was what kind of person a batchmate was and formed our friendships accordingly. It has been one of the healthiest environments I have ever been in.

People marry in caste for equal status, thinking, belief systems etc. Dalit president were never refused to enter temple. Only Brahmins are priests because other people are not interested. Slur is used by Dalits/Ambedkarwadis more. Wealth holding has nothing to do with caste.

We really have to change the way we’ve been brought because it clashes with the external reality. We’re not taught about caste in school beyond something superficial, yet when you look back on your life (in my case, a Dominant-Caste School Environment), it was everywhere around you. People have had to give up so much in order to see privileged people gain more privilege. P.S. We should be taught more of Dr. Ambedkar’s work in formal education.

This video on caste gave me such a bigger view of how it is still rooted in our system and how blind we are to it esp stuff related to privileges and how one has to “stamp” themselves to get basic needs.. i usually don’t associate myself with my caste but as a Dalit I experienced those differences from my own friends and now I understand why they complain only about reservations but not the actual atrocities & inequality. And when they used to make comments on reservations and how they are being looted, I used to have a guilt trip and took their side. But from now on, I’ll educate them with this video. Ok!! It’s my point of view! I have been living in an environment where caste system is not prevalent. My mom is a Brahmin; married a Kayastha (my father); my uncle married a Sudra ( my aunt) and my Pissi (father’s sister) married a Brahmin ( pissu ); while I have married an SC. As you can see we don’t believe in caste. But we are a middle class income group, when it comes to paying for education, exam fees, or other necessities. We have to pay much much higher then the reserved caste. For example in 2015 I cleared IBPS PO but due to unreserved category I was not selected for the job, I was short of just 5 marks. While my friend who was in ST category, she was well established. Her father was an army officer. She got 30 marks less then me but she got the job. So I strongly believe that reservation should be on the basis of income and economic condition, rather then caste. Then I guess the bridge of casteism will be reduced. Because the caste of the poor doesn’t matter.

You feel the pain as you were rejected for a job but someone got it bcoz it is now mandatory to give proper representation to a section that makes 70% of India but have been living in absolute darkness for ages. Remember many of us privileged didn't raise our voices/ got in action when they were discriminated to death. NCRB data still apeaks volumes about it. So next time you are rejected, and feel discriminated up against SCs or backward castes, remember it took ages to reach here. And today, they are only asking representation not payback!

Secondly, I am trying to emphasise the sheer indifference these ppl faced from many upper caste ppl for centuries, who even if not personally practicing Untouchablility or casteism, didn't either come forth to stop/eradicate it. We all have stayed silent all this while. And yes, it is duty of the collective to ensure no one is discriminated. There is a CORRECTION that must be made, that upper caste population is 30%, no it's not. UC hindu population is around 15% leaving behind UCs from different religions... The last time caste census of upper castes happened it was in 1932 done by Britishers. Post independence it was stopped. Imagine in a country where we even know how many pigs and cows we have in our country, we don't know population of upper castes in the nation.. Imagine how is anthropology and sociology research done in our country. This year govt was put under a lot of pressure for caste census but caste census wasn't done in 2021, giving an excuse for covid times... So yeah, upper caste population has decreased since 1932 ,their fertility rate is much lower than lower castes

Same happens with me, without any offense let me tell you that a general category student sitting next to me once asked me my category himself and as I said SC he started telling the boy next to him that he is very lucky as he is from SC category. Fun fact is that I bring way Better marks than him and if I talk about him he just scores 1 digit scores even less than 5 in easy tests. Everytime he asks my marks and never shows his marks also sometimes lies about his marks. And he is the guy who thinks that reservation is reverse casteism meanwhile his score never crosses Tier 3 college's ST cut off too. I mean he isn't even passing the exam.

I'm working class English. Growing up I knew there were rich and poor and it permeated through society dictating education, job, marriage and future. But it was only when I visited a friend who had gone to university that its reality hit me. Not just the obvious but the mindset the self belief or the inbred insecurity. That I deserved to be unhappy, to have no goals, no achievements. I was 18 before I actually realized that it was possible for someone from my background to go to university. So I went back to school and got my degree. The class in the UK is obviously different than the caste in India but the entitlement, the sense of self worth or its lack is the same. Hopefully our children will no longer accept its inevitability.
