Cheers bud!

Someone might have already said this, but anyway about the swearing: I've noticed that many Finnish people swear way more in English and feel comfortable with it. People hear swearwords from movies and as you said they don't mean that much to them. Just a weird phenomenon...

I think people also say "sori" more easily than "anteeksi". Even Swedes say "sorry" (with Swedish pronunciation) a lot. It's because sorry is a hard word to say, but it's somehow easier if it's in another language.
@svalE2K9

I think there's couple of reasons: 1. Swear words in a non-native language just don't have the same connotation or impact 2. Finnish people in general swear a lot and it is more acceptable by culture, which is fine

Most likely because swearing gives an extra moment to think about what you're going to say. Subconsciously of course, but you can see this happening whenever you listen to someone ramble on without much forethought. Regardless of the nativity of the language.

For me the importance of learning a language comes from the fact that you learn a lot more about peoples culture if you speak their language. I studied diffenrent 7 languages from elementary to high school and a couple more as a hobby after. I've learned that in many places you get the tourist prices if you dont speak the language. Also people are more comfortable speaking in english to you if you start in their language. When I lived in Japan I learned to speak english with a heavy japanese accent to be understood better. But what shocked me was that after very minimal contact to my finnish family and friends (this was before smartphones and i was so busy i didnt have time to skype) coming home i pronounced finnish with a japanese accent. My family and friends thought I was joking around when I spoke with an accent and spoke very formally because I was used to the polite language system japan has.

I think Finns have that change in slang too! I'm originally from north of Finland and after moving to south my "murre" has changed a lot. But whenever I talk to a person with the same dialect as I had or even with a very cute dialect of eastern Finland (savo) it really gets out of hand! So maybe it's a Helsinki thing to dampen your dialect and blow it all out whenever you have a chance :D

I have the same habit with swear words. I am half french/ half portuguese, born and raised in France, but i mostly swear in portuguese or even english, because it doesn't feel as bad as swearing in French. And for people speaking english in France, i think more and more young people speak it better, due to more exposure to english with social medias and netflix and many other "english" things. But if you go outside of the big cities, you'll have more people who don't speak english at all, especially older people.

When it is a matter of harsh language/swearing/ärräpäät/kiroilu I think certain vocalizations have affect on how it is used. I've noticed that strong Finnish curses have hissing S or growly R within or sharp T. V is also good as it can be loaded for more emphasis. In that most ubiquitous word of English there is both very loaded F and sharp K in there as well. Most important thing about it is to know when and how to use it. They do have ability to strengthen your resolve and help you endure pain so use them sparingly as they lose their power used constantly.

As a kid we would go visit siblings in another area every vacation, and my cousins would say "you speak so strongly like *where I lived*" and when I returned, my friends would say "you speak so weird". Have you watched Ismo Leikola's stand up pieces about finnish and english words? Most likely you have. How did you like them? I thought both were pretty clever and funny, but also true. i had similar experience when i moved from U.K to Ukraine, but I've been here for a while now. I am now not quite fluent but i am very nearly fluent in Russian. i think only going to get another degree in ukraine now would force my russian to the next level. e.g. im fluent, but i dont have the vocubulary for certain technical areas as i dont use them. now with my level, i just learn vocab lists of specialist technical vocabulary for say astrophysics which i did recently, as i did a university short course here last year. so all i needed to learn was the nouns mostly, my still russian teacher in st petersberg still prepares me the vocab lists when i need them for specialist situation, so i get a list of like up to five hundred words to memorise about astrophysics. of course finland, ukraine, very different, but there are some general similarities in the slavic, scandinavian groups. the ethnic origins are pretty close. actually finland was my first choice destination, and to go to the very northern tip. and i was looking for some work. i have worked as a fisherman, so i was very happy to do something like that, which would also have been great way to integrate with locals, and be forced to learn language. when i first went to ukraine, i was in village, noone spoke english. and i went days when the translator for me couldnt get here from kiev or cherkasy the nearest city and town. i had to communicate with a gcse level russian i already had, supplemented with dictionary. the kids, twelve years old, they taught me actually most of my russian,,literally, i started learning russian from their school lessons, as they get ukrainian and russian as in central ukraine people speak a weird mix of both languages.and the kids in the home taught me the syrillic alphabet so well that in one day intensive i was reading russian, reading russian in newspapers. i find russian syrillic so easy to read after that. I use alot of russian and ukrainian swear words-again they dont feel as naughty, as course. living overseas as a brit i think it's the most exciting experience there is, the ultimate adventure. And I am looking on moving further north as i really need the cold weather, i hate the sun. so i would love to go as far northern europe as possible. i dont ever want to return to U.K.I now write and think and type in russian as equal to english, and i would say by another five years english will be gone from my brain, except for online like this. When you first came to finland did you work for a company, did you apply for work, or did you come with your own business from U.K to set up there??

In Finland we go into another extreme when learning languages. In most cases when you're applying for a job, it isn't enough that you're able to speak three languages (finnish, swedish, english) but employees often ask like "so, what's the fourth language you can speak". Because most of the people mainly see those three languages as languages that everyone's able to speak so they're not special. So to really give an impression and make yourself stand out, finnish people study additional languages. Nowadays it's very common too that finnish person can speak four languages.

I would say that it's common for a finnish person to have learned on average four different languages at some point in their lives, instead of being able to speak four languages.

@@victorlockheed7213 Finnish and English are quite common in north in my experience. Atleast with people under their fifties. I live near kuusamo but used to live in Tornio. Then there's some minority languages in north like saami and meänkieli.

Perkeleen hyvä video. I think the thing about swearing goes with most languages you are not native with. I(a Finnish person) and my friends tend to swear in English or other languages more often/easily, but swearing in Finnish has more meaning.

Hmm, just thought about a way for a non native to learn Finnish pretty "quickly" (well quicker than sitting home alone ripping hair out trying to figure out how to pronounce something). As we all, we have the favorite closest store we go to buy small things more often than we think right? Simply asking the cashier to say the item's name for you to repeat might actually get you pretty far and also give a nice little break for the employee from the monotone work that is sitting behind the register.

Question: Would you recommend anyone to move to Finland? Would you recommend pensions to move to Finland? I have lived all my life in South Africa and hubby is Finnish.
@herrakaarme

Concerning pensioners, it doesn't seem intuitive since lots of pensioners move away from Finland, mainly to Spain, but some even all the way to Florida. They might spend the summer in Finland but at least the winter in the south. The Finnish winter is harsh and dark, so it makes sense. Perhaps some of them move back if they fall seriously ill, to enjoy the public healthcare for their last years.

5:14 this! It’s so true. I don’t swear often in Finnish (it just sounds wrong to me, most likely because I’ve been taught that it’s bad to curse) but when it comes to English... oh boy do I say “oh fuck”, “well shit” and “goddammit” a lot! They just sound like normal words to me and nothing else. Even though I know they are curse words, I just can’t connect them the same way as Finnish curse words.
