As always, you are such a breath of fresh air - Since the first time I watched your videos a couple years ago, you have always spoken so knowledgeably, professionally and sincerely that almost all other bushcrafting subject mater experts seem like children trying to get views. I'm so glad that you continued the #AskPaulKirtley series. Also, I thoroughly enjoyed your book, and my grandsons enjoy it even more. Well done, sir - thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences!

The older and hopefully more competent in life we get the more relaxed we should be. I find it allows me to be kinder and less judgemental which in turn makes me happier. Since you put so much of your expensively gained and hard won knowledge out for free I consider it only good manners to buy your book as an excellent reference guide.

Good to watch you again. Watching you years ago, it was your technical skills that made me watch. They are excellent and I learnt volumes. You have grown to be more analytical yet relaxed and mature. Having the solid practical base, the knowledge that you do, mixed with your experiences, makes it more “realistic” in every sense. There are many messages in your “ramblings”, and they are all drawn from having lived it. Keep evolving!

Great to see these back. You definitely seem much more chilled in this episode, that was good to see. I thought about saying something about staying dry under a tarp but I prefer this version of you to the rants. 🤣 For the record, I've never yet got wet due to rain and I sleep under a tarp way over 300 times a year. Thanks for everything you do, you should plug your stuff more.

My bushcraft (originally scoutcraft growing up as a member of the Boy Scouts) philosophy has evolved from conquering the wild to appreciating the wild. I was brought up in scouting by good men, but many were trained in the military which colored their view of survival. I feel I’ve grown past the need to know I can subdue my surroundings. I simply want to work with and appreciate what nature has to offer.

I find that sometimes fresh cheaper Fire Steels come with a sort of coating (to protect them?). At the start they are hard to get a spark from, but a few extra hard strikes from a sharp knife spine then it removes some of that coating and then sparks do come a little easier. Agree with getting sparks easier from Light My Fire was a lot easier from the very start though.
@PaulKirtley3 жыл бұрын
Yes, indeed that's true. I got the sense that the question was coming from the perspective of having scraped a lot on these steels already but still to no avail. Warm regards, Paul
