In my humble opinion, I think Mehdi Hassan loves hearing himself talk (check Mona Eltahawy's "Do Arab men hate women?") Instead of easing his guests into the process, Mehdi, becomes aggressive in his approach and continuously defends what he perceives as right while not giving his guests time to answer the questions he is asking. He constantly interrupts which leads the guests to start arguing amongst themselves instead of having an objective and analytical debate. While Mehdi seems quite emotional and oversensitive in his approach, Tariq Ramadan displays cognitive biases and rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos and logos) in his responses which in turn makes his arguments logical and credible.

A very good debate. We all have different views and it is a learning process for us as human species to understand the complexity in the different faiths and religions of the society. That we get together and communicate and debate is in itself the true example of brotherhood amongst all faiths. Yes it will be a long process and a very long journey before we reach the common ground . But that would not be the final destination because the world changes everyday and so is the society. New times will bring new questions and hope we meet together to debate as we do today. Because the problem is not when you don’t have the answers: problem is when Questions are not asked. Because only then we will have a solution. Peace be with you.

I must say I'm a little divided about prof. Tariq's closing statement (47:05) where he says that he's 'done on any discourse about "integration"' and that he's 'opening to door to contribution"'. I don't understand why it cannot be both. If I go to live and work in another country (as I plan to in the future), I want to both learn and get enriched by my surrounding culture as well as being able to give back. It's not a one-way street. If you shutting the door on "integration" or "assimilation" as Tariq suggests then this means turning this natural process of an exchange of cultures into a one-way system where one culture insist on only "contributing" but is not willing to really value the culture they want to live amongst.
@bilalirfan75264 жыл бұрын
I think if you look more broadly on the message he conveyed consistently throughout the debate, it was more along the lines of integration not translating into abandoning one's own culture, morals, or ethics in favor of another. He stressed the 3 L's (Law, Language, etc) and understanding the framework of another nation or country.

A quote from Tariq Ramadan. "My brothers and sisters, we must exploit the so-called democracy and freedom of speech here in the West to reach our goals. Our Prophet Muhammad and the Koran teach us that we must use every conceivable means and opportunity to defeat the enemies of Allah. Tell the infidels in public, we respect your laws and your constitutions, which we Muslims believe that these are as worthless as the paper they are written on. The only law we must respect and apply is the Shari’a." Obviously, Tariq Ramadan is an enemy of our entire civilization and people. He must be exposed for what he is. Tariq Ramadan was born in Geneva, Switzerland on 26 August 1962 to an Egyptian Muslim family. He is the son of Said Ramadan and Wafa al-Banna, who was the eldest daughter of Hassan al Banna, who in 1928 founded the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Gamal al-Banna, the liberal Muslim reformer is his great-uncle. His father was a prominent figure in the Muslim Brotherhood and was exiled by Gamal Abdul Nasser from Egypt to Switzerland, where Tariq was born.

Craig Harris I know a lot of people here on KZbin seem to have an endless amount of time to waste arguing with strangers, but I don't have that kind of time or inclination. I will just say that women are fighting for the right to determine what do with their own bodies, and are being sent to prison for choosing to have an abortion. You don't find that regressive? I'm critical of all religions, and I think we should all be. My "point" is that it is futile to argue that one religion is apparently less oppressive than another when the fact is that all of them have been used to oppress women (and other groups). To think that Christianity is somehow inherently more progressive than Islam or other religions is laughable! Whatever progress has been made is because women & men have fought tirelessly for it. And it helped that in the West people didn't need to ALSO recover and rebuild their societies from scratch after the devastation caused by years of colonialism, like in other parts of the world. You can be ethical without being religious. Extremism in any religious form, Islam, Christian or Jewish is a threat to political, social and economic stability of everyday people who just want to live their lives independently of the desire for power--or a forced adherence to a strict set of rules and norms upon pain of imprisonment, torture and death. Religion needs to be separate from governance but still an individual or social (group) freedom as banning it outright does not work either, and such a ban will too create instability.

This will never be done! There are still Christians who believe the crazy parts in the Bible, we don't need to debate them, we just move past them and vote democratically our laws. This is the problem with Islamists, they can't let go of the Qoran when talking legislation.

@@najmaalikhan The Quran is a poorly plagiarized version of the old and new testament written by an illiterate businessman in 7th century Arabia, and as such, can be seen as an extreme form of Jewish and Christian heresy. Mohammad may have had some ideas that were helpful 1,400 years ago, but the political philosophy contained in the Quran and Hadith is objectively inferior to secular liberal political philosophy, as can be seen by the results that each achieve when implemented.

Democracy is the best revenge, that is what Pakistan has learned after 100 years of colonization and 35 years of dictatorship, these people who overthrew Muhammad Morsi drowned their own empire, pro-Islam or secular whatever the Egyptians chose, it's their right they should remember the power belongs to them, and one more thing that institutions take time to build, there is a long long path in front of Egypt.

What has Shari’a got to do with democracy and governance? Shari’a is or would be the constitution of the nation which every citizen would be subject to, rulers and ruled. While democracy or parliamentary - call it what you want - system, followed by governance of the elected would administer the nation.

You can have certainly ethics without religion. You can definitely. There are a lot of people with good ethics even better than people with religion and don't need religions for that.

Ethics like throwing homosexuals off building, stoning women, beating your wife, killing whoever dares leave Islam, etc. Those ethics?
