i think there's something to what finkestein says. he's right that BDS is _the only_ palestinian activism going on, but overwhelmingly the efforts of westerners against western institutions. AND the coy 'no position' on israel & sweeping 'right of return' goals in BDS mission statement could result in arab majorities in both palestine _and israel._ essentially, two arab countries presumably electing arab leaders. not what the UN had in mind in 1948. so BDS is a cowboy operation of gullible western do-gooders and lazy palestinians (yeah, i said it), with the latter doing little on own behalf but petitioning UN for membership & favorable rulings in UN court of justice, letting themselves get blown up before western media (since they don't build effing bomb shelters), and crying the victim blues to every camera & audience they can find online and in diaspora (i have first hand experience of this). frankly, i wouldn't want them on my borders either. they have no economic plan for statehood except living on UN (and other institutional) dole. yeah, i checked. that said, israel's boycott, land grabs & regular military assaults are indefensible and illegal. so you've got the cowboys vs the outlaws. a pox on both their houses, but each has a right to own house. i can't/won't support BDS until the worrisome parts of charter/mission/whatever that norman identifies are changed.

@DOG-bt6vy5 жыл бұрын
@ that's because most normal rational people agree with the establishment that Israel has, at least according to international law, the right to exist and you cant criticize Israel for violating international law but then not recognizing the legitamate of its existence. Realistically, BDS would get farther if it just does this and doesnt do itself a disservice of being "agnostic" on the right of Israel's existence. Later on they could move the goalpost and annex more territory or even merge into one state. It would probably be better to merge into one monetary union first (like the Eurozone) since that would make for an easier transition. Realistically, do you think Israeli citizens will want to live under one state with the Arabs? Probably not. So this request wont go a long way. You would have many more Jewish supporters if BDS officially recognized Israel's right to exist.
5 жыл бұрын
thatmamay thatmaymay That’s a fairytale wish. What Israel means as “right to exist” is it’s “right” to brutalize Palestinians and pillage more of the West Bank, and ME in general, because the basis of its STATE is rooted in supremacy, that a Jew deserves exclusive ownership of land over a non-Jew, including that of neighboring countries hence the creation of Hezbollah to defend the region. BDS is getting plenty of a desired response, to deservedly stain Israel’s image globally. Sorry but you’re wrong. There’s nothing ethical nor moral about a hostile ethnostate with the aggressive agenda of Manifest Destiny.

I've known Mehdi Hassan for many years and watched a substantial amount of his piercing destruction of many who've been subjected to his cross-examinations. Before watching today's show I've never known Norman, and even though I admire Mehdi, I have to be fair and objective and conclude that Norman has not only resisted Mehdi's (and at times audience members') incursions but rebutted them with sincere, ethical and sensible arguments that in addition to being capable of assumption by the ordinary people like us, exemplify the great mind that he is. I say this as a Muslim and naturally I have a lot of love for Mehdi, but at times, and especially after watching Mehdi today, I have to wonder what his intentions are at times and whether he is influenced or restrained by the company he keeps.

@@fizariaz9170 many people seem to misunderstand the role of the interview outside of American-style deferent media, and so you often see these comments misinterpreting these interviewers posing hostile questions to shine light on the subject's views as the interviewer "losing" a "debate". When, the point of course is not to "win" anything, but to put opposing views to the subject in a forceful way in order to draw out their stance, and bring clarity and scrutiny to the subject's positions. Steven Sackur is probably the archetype of this "BBC grilling" interview style, but there are many such interviewers. But so often in the comments below, people misunderstand what's going on. (And with Americans, often the guests seem to also) I suppose I must say that I think Mehdi often takes it a bit too far, he's a little too fond of talking over his guests, and sometimes his own views shine through so clearly in his questions that he muddies the distinction between "interviewer" and "opponent", but I still nevertheless much prefer this to the American style toothless interview. In this case I think it was a much, much more interesting and elucidating view of Finkelstein's position than a softer interview would have been for instance, and on that front, Hasan did an excellent job
@saucyballs702 Жыл бұрын
@@Muzikman127I think what motivates Mehdi to take a bit too far is that he doesn't want to leave any stone unturned. That's why you probably won't see anyone commenting on his videos in the line of, "Mehdi was too soft or biased. The guest would crumble if he had asked her/him this." His questions are like acid test. If the guest is not knowledgeable enough, not intelligent enough, s/he will definitely crumble under pressure. However, when a guest is able to deter mehdi's questions, it becomes very enjoyable and that interview stands the test of time. This particular interview for example, will be viewed and applauded for decades to come.

Norman spoke very calmly (mostly) and very deliberately. A very frustrating debate, especially since the people joining the discussion in the front were trying to lecture Norman, who has been at this topic for some 30 years or more if I understand correctly, on elementary moral principles surrounding the issue, as if he hasn't thought of those principles himself when he first got into the subject!
