Omega has a lot of good things going for it lately. However their biggest problem when compared to Rolex is the fact that Omega is a master of diluting its own brand. They have pumped out so many different limited editions of the Speedmaster that it makes something like the Dark Side of the Moon seem irrelevant. Not because the Dark Side isn't a great watch with many milestones achieved but because to the average consumer it comes off as "just another Speedy Pro clone". Until Omega learns to be more reserved with their offerings and stop whoring out their various lines of watches to "limited editions" they will never be viewed as equal to Rolex.

But why would you want Omega to be viewed as "equal" to Rolex? Then car salesmen, golf players, pimps, and rappers would wear Omegas. That would be a reputation disaster Oo I still feel like Omega tries to balance their attempts at being more popular and appealing to enthusiasts pretty well.
@Milofchg6 жыл бұрын
They come up with limited editions so that they can keep the Speedmaster Moonwatch as is. True as close as it can to the original. If it's not broke don't fix it. Omega knows some people will get board of it, and marketing can go so far before people just don't notice. This where the limited editions come in. Omega changed things up every year to two. Original Omega Moodwatch owners will be drawn to buy the limited editions, collectors will always collect limited rare watches, and people who want something different but want Omega.... It's a win win for Omega and everyone. Since they don't have Rolex marketing (Hollywood, luxury sporting event sponsorship). Omega has the resources to change and upgrade their product. Rolex relies on holding back, keeping production/manufacturing a top secret, "the best watches" mentality of non-watch consumers, plus the reputation of being expensive and only for the wealthy. Rolex (as a owner of a few Rolex watches) IMO and my experience Rolex is not as accurate as it claims to be. Yes Rolex are tough watches, they are timeless classics. Yes Rolex holds it value really well, as long as you sell on Ebay or as a private sale (never sell back to an AD or pawn shop). However, for all the fame and hype Rolex has, it does not live up to it. It only lives up to the stigma of a rich mans watch. Which it never was before the mid 80's. Rolex like Omega were tool watches with a few luxury references mixed in with the sport watches. I am a fan of both. I'm a Date Just/Explorer guy, but don't care for Omega dress watches. I'll take a Submariner over a Seamaster any day. I'll take a Speedmaster over a Daytona ANYDAY. I'll take vintage Omega over vintage Rolex because Omega has so much more to offer and you can find working vintage pieces at reasonable prices.

Well, I am Swiss and grew up in the 1970s where Omega (and Tissot) were almost synonymus for the Swiss watch industry. Omega was founded in the very same year as modern Switzerland (in 1848). In my mind Omega always was "above Rolex"! I don't care about the hype and therefore the non-availability of Rolex models in general. (Maybe Omega would suffer the same problem if their models were as asked as Rolex' models. Luckily Omega does not suffer this problem.) I'd chose Omega over Rolex like 007 (James Bond) since 1995 (Pierce Brosnan)! 😇

The new Omega Speedmaster Racing (44mm case) with the white dial is (for me) a Daytona killer. The dial has something like the texture from the Grand Seiko Snowflake to it, the tachy-bezel is a combination from ceramic and white enamel (filling for the engraved numbers) which gives it a stunning contrast. You get a date display and the case has a more interesting shape overall then the Oyster-Cases. I agree, that the daytona is (or maybe will ever be) the "hot watch", because it's harder to get and has the stronger history behind it then the modern co-axial Speedmasters. That's okay for me. At the end of the day, it's about the personal taste and from that point of view, the Daytona is a boring watch in my eyes.

(Drop of less than 12 inches) onto kitchen worktop Broken stop watch buttons twice. (Dropped at the gym soft floor) And cracked glass once.(tapped a door handle walking past a door) Omega replaced the buttons and bezle free of charge and said it should not happen but would not replace the glass even though it was a crack on the inside cost £700. It is a good looking watch but for every day wear I would not recommend to anyone. I have the Daytona also and wear it most days. Do a small drop test say 12inchs with both onto a hard surface and watch what happens.

Okay, I have to admit that both watches are very good. But it's still an unfair competition because the Rolex is such a strong enemy to compete with. I would'nt buy any of them because I have strict criteria on which watches I buy. For example, for me, the perfect luxury watch is mechanical, at least 200 meters water resistant, a fixed bezel would be perfect, the dial colour should be black, white, grey, red or silver and the watch should be made out of stainless steel. Keep it simple, robust, extravagant AND elegant as possible. When you're clothes are all black and you want to feel really cool, then the Omega fits perfect, imho, it is more a fashion thing. If you want a everyday luxury watch which is the ultimate, iconic chronograph, then...;-) Anyway, I love all watch geeks and freaks! Let's celebrate Baselworld 2018 together! Cheers.

Rolex is a marketing behemoth. There's no one better. They've marketed themselves as the global go-to luxury watch brand for anyone wanting to get into luxury watches, despite the fact that there are many brands out there (AP, Patek, Vacheron, Lange) who make far superior, far more exclusive luxury products, and many other brands (Omega, IWC, JLC) who make far superior, more technically advanced products than Rolex, for similar or less money. I admire Rolex, but I'm a very proud owner of several modern and vintage Omegas, and consider them technically and aesthetically better than anything Rolex produces. But that doesn't matter. Until other brands can do what Rolex does, the crown will remain on top. And personally, I hope they do because I want to be able to buy and own my watches without jumping through artificially created hoops like waiting lists, paying over the odds for grey market, or over the odds for basic materials like steel when other brands are experimenting with titanium, ceramic, carbon fibre, or luxury metals like gold.

I own two gmt's and one Speedmaster and seamaster 300 (Bond), as i said, this used to be a simple question, i really dont know. The more i get into watches the more i respect Rolex but Omega becomes a solid part of my collection so there must be something that's attracts me to them. Thank you for this fantastic video and this dilema; Rolex vs Omega, who is going to win?

I have owned Rolex and Omega. The Omega Speedmaster moon 1861 movement watch in my opinion is the most underrated watch on the market. If Rolex owned the right to the Speedmaster the price would be more than double. I won't buy Rolex anymore because the brand is overrated in today's market. The Omega 9300 coaxial movement is better than the Rolex 3135 and 4130 movement.

Maybe it’s just me, but the one thing I cannot get my head around is that the Daytona does not have a date window. After all this time you would have thought they would figure it out. I suppose it is because they don’t have the room to fit their iconic cyclops date window on the watch. It’s one of the things that, in my opinion, is a detractor of the watch. I have become so accustomed to looking down at my watch for the date, that when I wear some of my vintage pieces without one, I feel a bit lost. The Daytona would be the perfect watch, if it could squeeze in a date window.

Having now both watches in my collection, I can tell you that the Daytona wears more comfortably but the Dark side of the moon looks way better, light bounces off awesomely, a bit think to wear with formal shirts and jackets but both are incredible pieces.

Grand Seiko Ceramic is also worthy of consideration. Just wish they made them a bit smaller.

thank you wf for this amazing review and i think omega does a better job than rolex in many ways first: omega make new models than rolex second: omega found a way to neutralize the magnetic filds that affects the watch accuracy which rolex does not(i know rolex has the parachrom escapment which does do a good job keeping the accuracy but its not enough for me)

Pointless video. Rolex = waiting lists. Omega = 30% discount and immediate delivery. No contest. Watchfinder must have a batch of Omegas for sale.

Your videos are one of the best on youtube and i really enjoy watching the knowledge you shared with us. Also, your story telling is amazing😊 Now, I have a rado d star 200 and i have absolutely no idea how to use it. Please do a review on that please as it is a beautiful looking watch.

Interesting video. Technology aside most collectors want what they can't have "easily". It's the hunt and not always the capture of the prey and in this case a SS Professional series from Rolex will always win over the great majority of other brands which as you articulated have much more to offer.

Such a bless to listen to! I like all the details you always give us. And like the history lessons you are giving us! Love the speedmaster! It is a beautiful timepiece, but I think it is not timeless where the daytona will last forever!

I have both. In fact, I have over 20 Rolex and Omega watches. I actually like the Omegas much more than Rolex other than my Rolex Panda Newman and Rolex Air King.

The new Omega heritage line is gorgeous. Rolex is also gorgeous. It's healthy to have such competition. I own a Sub but would gladly buy a Seamaster next time.

I think newer generations are far less forgiving towards underhanded tactics. A middle aged/old, rich man that is considering buying a Rolex, when surprised by the realization that he will have to be on a waiting list for two years, he will accept and wait, maybe even buy something to improve his spot. A young, rich guy who is considering to buy a Rolex when faced with this dilemma will politely refuse, go down the street, and buy an Omega. If Rolex continues with its dubious methods the will face unmeasurable repercussions.

I think Omega has some impressive offerings. The most impressive thing I've found is that if you want to actually see the model you're interested in, it's typically available in the boutique for viewing. As for the ceramic Daytona, I've sadly never seen one in the flesh as they are unobtainable. As a nice bonus, the Rolex stores typically laugh at you for even inquiring about one. Does it make me want one even more? Kinda.

So I lusted after a Daytona to compliment my Kermit (original lol) but balked at the markup. I also have a Seamaster and have also lusted after a Speedmaster. After weighing up movement, value for money, availability etc I ordered a Grey Side with meteorite dial, sedna gold with clasp strap. Arrived last week after a two month wait and I absolutely love it. Truly impressed and I can only see it growing on me even more with time . It's a keeper!

The Omega is impossible to read the time dim light. No contrast between hands and dial

Honestly I do not see omega ever becoming Rolex but who knows. Rolex too focused on what they do and omega often proved they are not. It is matter of long term strategy. We will have to wait and see

People are only grabbing the Rolex to flip it, so they can then buy other watches.

That Speedy looks nice but is unreadable. Ceramic might be scratch resistant but it's brittle, it will break if it hits a hard surface. Fora have quite a few documented horror stories showing photos with lugs being ripped appart after falling to the floor. Also, chips of ceramic were reported to come off in certain pressure points like behind the lugs for instance where the end links tend to apply considerable force against the lugs. I'm ok with ceramic on a bezel, not on an entire case. It's worth mentioning that the cost of replacing a broken Speedy ceramic case is about 7 thousands euros, ouch. I'll stick to steel, thank you very much. I can live with scratches, not with broken cases and lugs.

Lack of legibility and thickness are dealbreakers with the Omega, despite the fact that it's a relative technical marvel.
