@@redskyatnight123 Wow, where to begin... Elevated CO2 levels over the normal range caused by humans burning fossil fuels trap the sun's heat over the equator and destabilize ocean convection currents, making those weather events more extreme than they would be otherwise. The earth is actually meant to be in a cooling phase at the moment; instead global average temps. have gone up 1.2 degrees in the last fifty years. Scientists can gauge global weather and avg. temps from millions of years ago by reading ice core at the poles and deep ocean sediment samples. Experts in geology, paleontology, biology, glaciology, and so on have spent decades documenting this in exhaustive detail, making anthropogenic climate change the most thoroughly proven theory in the history of science. Among the first to discover the Greenhouse Effect, btw, were scientists who worked for the fossil fuel companies fifty years ago. If YT allowed links I could show you their correspondence and details of the companies' decades-long multi-billion dollar campaigns to malign independent scientists who knew this, to dictate government policy, to sabotage alternative energy startups and ensure increased dependence on oil, gas and coal.

Rory is talking nonsense about the Falklands. We would not need to send any carriers or ships, or any military at all to defend the Falklands. We garrisoned it big time after the Falklands war, and there's around 2000 soldiers (compared to just 40 before) now stationed there permanently, along with anti-air, 2 eurofighters, and plenty of other weaponry. We also keep a Type 45 (enough firepower/radar to take out the entire Argentine airforce by itself) down there, and there's some submarines regularly patrolling. The Argentine armed forces basically haven't changed since the 80's, other than get worse as ships literally sink in harbour (really did happen, look it up).. I am surprised to hear such nonsense coming from Rory, as he's usually relatively in the know. Argentina has zero chance of ever getting a foothold on the Falklands islands now. Our armed forces are being chronically underfunded, but Argentina is not remotely a threat to the Falklands. The Argentine military, is absolute dogshit.

Cheapest and fastest way to address emissions is to shift diets far away from meat, of all kinds. Yet all the major governments (with the possible exception of India) are in the grip of the meat lobby and daren't touch it. It ls.not just about fossil fuels.
@albedo0point3911 ай бұрын
You can’t ’other it’ by blaming ‘big meat’. Vegetarianism is unpopular with the general public. No government would get into power if they strongly pushed for it.

Living beyond our means is a little bit disingenuous. My understanding is a lot of greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and general enviornmental degradation is a direct externality of the corporatations exploiting natural resources and extracting wealth. Don't punish the middle and working classes for the sins of wealthy.

‘People support climate policies’ Based on what? Politicians have never been honest with the public about the costs. Until the public genuinely understands and accepts the severe financial and freedom impacts of environmental policies, the government will have no mandate to continue.

Countries that are ahead of us in the Green transition are thriving. People only equate petrol with "freedom" because Big Oil has spent their billions in profit, not in developing more efficient forms of energy (for example hydrogen, which is found wherever companies drill for oil, but is ignored and wasted). Instead they channelled it into advertising to indoctrinate us into believing there weren't alternatives.

What a hilarious title from this two. Am I glad they're discussing the most important topic instead of the usual churn; yes. Are they absolute and utter hypocrites; yes. I am so sick of hearing Rory bragging about his world exploits, belting out the emissions of about 30 average people. He should be ashamed of it... he's not because because people are impressed by his 'adventures'...

And that comment by no means exculpates the Tories from this disaster. You totally failed to address the massive divide between London and the rest of the country. Guess that's because you live in London, which is now going the same way as Birmingham and Manchester (not to mention Liverpool) thanks to your toady and friend, Sadiq Khan. ALL these issues fall back to the issue of immgration, a problem you and Blair created, and other people are, always have, and will continue to pay the price. So, you know. Thanks. Until you pay a price for the catastrophe of immigration - a personal price - none of these issues will be addressed effectively, and personally, while criticisms of the Tories are fair for not managing to get the show back on the road, I'm not a believer in giving the people who first drove the truck into the ditch an opportunity for yet another wipeout.

There are plenty of free science courses online that could explain to you how the Greenhouse Effect works. Nature doesn't distinguish between sources of CO2, O3, CH4 SO2, whether it's from a series of Supervolcanic eruptions (the Permian extinction 250,000 years ago, for ex.) or from industrial smokestacks and vehicle exhaust. The chemicals are the same, the resulting climate disruption is the same.
