Not everyone is in the same boat!
The 26 richest people in the world, hold as much wealth as half its population
Life chances depend on gender, race and whether or not a person has a disability.
These global inequalities are being made worse by the pandemic. And the world is reaching a breaking point.
A bleak reality laid bare by the UN secretary general. Antonio Guterres has delivered one of his most hard-hitting messages.
He says the disparities start with the biggest institutions, and they should be eradicated under a new model of global governance, that guarantees a fair share of wealth, opportunity and power.
But how's that even possible?
And does the pandemic offer a chance for change?
Presenter: Sami Zeidan
Guests
Max Lawson, Head of Inequality Policy at Oxfam.
Jayati Ghosh, international development economist and professor
Alexander Deane, former Chief of Staff to David Cameron when he was the Shadow Secretary of State for Education.

This guy Alexander thinks calls for economic, racial and social equity is "this kind of talk." This is just hateful. The UK is a serious beneficiary of colonialism and thus created inequalities but the man can't see it!! Blinded by hate!!

Absolutely, Sami! Al Jazeera really needs to increase the length of Inside Story and Talking to Al Jazeera because these are really big, intricate topics and there's just no way to decently unparse the issues at hand in 30 minutes. These shows with guests and panelists need an hour, AT LEAST. Take your talk with John Bolton, for example. There's so much more I know these people have to say, journalists have to ask, and we have to hear - but there's just not enough tiiime! It all leaves me so intellexually frustrated. 😞

I think Alex you are living in UK bubble not the real world. Maybe you are talking because you are a typical privileged White from the West. I would like to invite to the current crisis that the people in the developed world such as yours that loots and are parasitic in nature on those less developed countries that you do not want to support, to see how their living conditions are looking like right now during this plandemic. Please do us a favour, do not blame the UN Secretary for exposing the long overdue truth. You just want to continue sitting & protecting the status quo and not see real required changes in the lives of the people who are less privileged than you.

In the United States, income is taxed, more so than wealth. Jeff Bezos is the wealthiest person in the world, but his salary as Amazon CEO is only $81,840. The super wealthy minimize their income, which is taxed at a higher rate than capital gains and dividends from investments. This is why Warren Buffett made the observation, his secretary pays a higher income tax rate than he does.

World bank gives money to the poor. Where does it go? It seems like there’s little improvement in most places, except maybe China. Rich people might want to share the wealth, but they can see it rarely gets to anyone except to the people who created the development plan. It just disappears into a black hole.

I wish the world would look at other ways to introduce change. Not just through the elected government, but to better improve the end to end delivery of aid. It seems that money is poured into crises, but due to local corruption and several other factors, it does not often reach all of those that are in need. Also, hats off to the moderator who tried to lead this discussion.

Jayati Ghosh is very astute in her observations. Appreciated how Max Lawson also recognized where Alexander was correct, but gently pointed out how, clearly, the 'usual ways' has led us to this stark inequality. We continue to learn about the many ways the "democratic" approach has long been manipulated, and people do not vote in their best interests all of the time... so the person clamoring for everything to be done through running for office, getting elected, and putting forward proposals is just advocating for the status quo. As another commentator said, this format is too short for this sort of debate. If the host has to constantly interrupt or speak over the guests, or they talk over one another, it is very frustrating for everyone involved. Digital content is not beholden to the advertising time frames of radio or television, so please allow complex subjects more thorough time. You can always make an edited short version available for those with less time to dedicate toward the subject.

The solution to inequality is to incentivize entrepreneurship. Not everyone can be an entrepreneur and a leader. Then there wouldn't be any followers/employees. Deal with inequality. Capitalism has made everyone rich, not poorer. Foreign investment in a country doesn't friggin make it poorer or worse off than before. Free trade makes everybody better off. Free markets allow for competition and better deals for consumers. Money begets money.

That is the reason why they promote democracy everywhere. Democracy and free media. Because having all the money of this world, these 26 can easily afford any expenses during election campaign in any country, and another reason - there is nobody who is in charge of the bad development like you people made your own choice so don't complain. Due to democracy and free markets they can stop operation of any plant in any country without a problem explaining this just by the low profitability and such an approach makes all countries dependent on them. Moreover, they use so called "free media" to implement any freaking ideas in peoples heads. Thus, we may say that all these elections is just a play where candidates are just actors and such real actors as Raegan, Schwarzenegger and Zelensky have proved this and like in any play there must be script writers, producers, directors and investors...Democracy and elections are old unviable ideas that have fooled people for many years and it is clearly seen now.
