Has this ever happened to your shell cordovan boots????

I clean up a pair of bespoke horween shell cordovan chukka boots that have been worn in the rain repeatedly. Can shell withstand rain and wet weather? Here is how I care for the boots using pure polish products.

I never heard you actually explain the initial problem with the boot. I wish you would have explained this further in detail and the cause of it. Many years ago, I had a shell cordovan Alden wingtip shoes that had horrible white waxy discoloration at all the rolls at the flex points on the forefoot. I could not get it out with a spoon or brushing, so ended up selling it. I think part of the problem was it was too large and wide for my foot.

Yeah that was weird that I waited until the end to explain it lol. It was just a grainy looking crease that had dried out, and just needed some conditioning and smoothing. As far as the blooming you had in the rolls, that’s probably due to the Alden acrylic and the amount of oils/waxes tanned into that shell. It can be different levels of tannage based on the requirements of the shoemaker to horween. Typically it eventually wears out but with horweens acrylic finish, that begins to break down as well and probably contributes to that look. It’s hard to say for sure, but that would be my guess. I actually have a video ready to publish about removing Alden acrylic finishing this week.

What do you think of Venetian balm for shell? I was recently given some, not sure how to use it. I have pure polish cleaner and cream which I’ve been using and pleased with.

VSC or balm is not anything I’d recommend. It’s just very thick and leaves a film on leather

Bloom

Nope, the bloom is oil that gets off the shell once you give it some wear, it dissappears after 5 sec brushing. Here we have some scaly/dry shell surface. It won't go away that easily, gotta grab your deerbone/spoon/cocobolo slicker and align the scales using some water as a lubricant, that's what the video's about. It's similar to bloom as it also happens on flexure points though.
