In New York, we look into the psychology behind leaving a tip and speak with customers who feel the practice has gone too far. And in Wisconsin, we take to the sky with a photographer tracing the roots of how our food goes from fields onto our tables. Watch these stories and more on Eye on America with host Michelle Miller.

A gratuity is at the discretion of the client for services rendered over and above the job description. It IS NOT a mandatory service charge.

It’s a system that has always been built on labor exploitation. That’s what capitalism, by definition, is. Tipping was the way to further continue the labor exploitation of sIavery after sIavery “ended”. to continue to avoid paying people for their work once they were “free” from their exploitation. They weren’t “free.” They were just thrown pennies instead of nothing and that was their “wage.” People in the US today are nowhere near that “life” and it is currently not the same - let us be clear - however, that is where “tipping” comes from in the US and ,yes, there are many other methods used today to continue labor exploitation... . 🕊

Yes!!!!!! Used to be for people who don’t get a full salary, now everyone wants one, even a cashier It’s for service workers and those who are known to depend on it such as wait staff and baggage handlers

Cashiers aren’t high paid workers though but they are still paid more than waitstaff generally but yea they don’t have to tip. There’s always been a tip jar at cafes and stuff though it’s not new

There are plenty of places that also don’t even give those gratuities to their employees. It just goes into their sales for the day. That is why I do not participate unless I’ve received true service and can tip directly to the server.

Won't lie. I hate having to tip and be the one to support the worker. But I keep the tips to back when the world was "normal". Hairdressers, pizza delivery, servers, etc. None of this baristas, checkout counters, online order pickups, etc.

I only tip when I dine in restaurants otherwise I select the 'no tip' option at the register. However, I do feel self conscious when I do that so my trips to deli and coffee shops have decreased by more than half.

Yes we went to restaurant for my birthday and the suggested tip was 28 percent! Crazy! I can't afford to eat at a sit-down restaurant. Sad since that was one of the social things I used to do weekly. Now I've given up Mexican food, hamburgers, pizza. No point eating food at $50 price points for lunch.

I was ordering a pizza on line from a new pizza place by my house, selected what I wanted and before paying the website asked me for a tip, before I even knew what the service was like or even if the pizza was any good. Cancelled my order left a one star explaining why. Went to Costco and got pizza. Why am I supplementing the wages for a restaurant owner driving a G Wagon

I work as an aircraft mechanic for an airline, I was standing on the jet bridge and as a group of passengers were walking past me, so I turned my work tablet around and presented to the passengers,to say they looked shocked was an understatement, until I said “can you imagine, I would have to punch myself in the face” we all had a good laugh

Yeah, got two spaghetti dinners to go for $35 and was asked for a tip for the cooks. Panera makes you stand on line to order, gives you a buzzer to retrieve your food when it is prepared and expects you to get your own beverage refills, but ask for a tip at the register. Sick.

I don’t tip. I live in California. The LOWEST PAID server is still making $17/hr. If I go out, I ask for two drinks and a water initially - so I don’t have to bug the server. That’s it. *Judge me, I don’t care*

……$17 bucks an hour. Even $20 bucks an hour. ……My 26 year old nephew lives in a MODEST neighborhood in L.A. with a roommate. They’re rent is $5,800 a month. How many hours at $20 an hour to pay half the rent?!? (Just rent, the food, gas, bills, insurance are EXTRA). 🤷🏼‍♂️

It has certainly gone too far….especially with the automatic gratuity (that is usually calculated based on a percentage AFTER tax, not the actual cost of the meal). I’m over it and I’ve lost the desire to go to many places because of it.

And if tipping becomes income tax free, we can drop back to 10%. That's what I will do. More than 10% is ONLY for exceptional service. And I'm still known to tip 1¢ when the service is lousy. When the food is bad, I tell the manager/owner; and the service was OK, then they get the 10%. And it goes without saying, that when either the service or food is bad, I Never Go Back.
