I know I learned through this pandemic is people have mastered going to church but not personal relationship with Jesus and God. The moment the churches closed it showed a lot of people were attached to the building instead of being attached to Jesus and God. Also the labor is plentiful but the workers are few.

I agree with the girl in the orange plaid shirt. Leaving the church has taught me to search for God for myself and not be lead by the flock and follow what the flock does. He had to set me apart to establish my identity and abolish that chameleon spirit that made me conform to my surroundings. A lot of people get lost in the religious crowd and church culture that they never find themselves nor do they find Christ for themselves.

So the whole time your looking at whats around instead of find yourself or God. Sounds like a personal problem. The word of God says that wheat and Tear must grow together and God will do the separating..... so going to church is a command. But a person doesn't have to get caught up in the wrong things. Are maybe you was in the wrong place 🤔
@naturallymemarie9650

@@jaybavis5896 could've been the wrong church. Fellowship is a command, not neccessarily church. I can meet with other believers at their home or at a coffee shop and have fellowship. And yes it was a personal problem for me because I have identity issues. So God needed to establish my own identity a part from the crowd. Its easy to "act" like a Christian when you are around a bunch of other Christians. That was my problem. I blend in too well but didnt know God for myself. But being in the wilderness alone is where true identity and character is built. Thats my season right now and my conviction. And it has yielded fruit because I've never been more close to God than I am now.

My life has greatly improved after leaving church. Being born in a southern Baptist home and forced to go to church every Sunday threatened and stunted my intellect. Gossip, constant shaming of free thinkers, sexism, homophobia, peer pressured into joining the choir to make my toxic family look good, hypocrisy, and manipulation using the bible really infected my psyche. At 16 I finally woke up and stopped attending church which caused a lot of shame towards my family and they tried everything to pull me back in. Yet their fear tactics became nothing more than empty threats. The shackles holding back my mind have been unchained and freed from control. Therapy and distancing myself has played a huge part in recovery. It takes a lot of courage to speak your mind against a brainwashed majority. Always push forward, never look back.

Yes! At almost 65, I have discovered the same thing. And I think it got worse after Covid. Our church had outdoor services which we never attended. I had no desire to sit in the car for a couple of hours with a 7 and 9 yr old kids. (We have two adopted grandkids). It was hard enough sitting thru regular church in the building with them pre covid. In the car they would have felt they had the freedom to play and do whatever they wanted. So we chose to stay home. No. I didn’t watch the live stream either. What I found, and especially after going back to services, is that the pastor feels you MUST watch WHILE it is being live-streamed. Not afterwards. He still runs his mouth about that. He still rants about people who haven’t come back after Covid. He thinks you have to be there every time the doors are open. I just can’t. I’m too tired after taking care of kids 24/7 and homeschooling at my age. He still rants about kids’ sports and people not being at church because their kids are playing sports. I have no idea who he is talking about. When mine did play, it wasn’t on church days. And there’s only my two who are now 13 and 11 and one more 13 year old, then two toddlers. It’s a small church and I think it’s getting smaller. I have been away off and on helping with the piano and music at a couple of other churches a few times. He always mentions that when I’m there. But I made the decision to just chill for awhile because I wanted to find another church (none of the ones I’ve helped out at were somewhere I wanted to stay) but around here , while there is a church every few feet, none seem to be right for us. So I had kinda given up. Then I came across Ronnie Hurst on KZbin about 3 or so weeks ago. He left the system and has some great info. I feel like a burden has been lifted off of me! Our pastor has gotten to where he’s making stuff up and we spend half the service with kids leaning over and whispering to me that what the preacher said wasn’t in the Bible or me telling them the same thing. So I’ve explained to them about why we aren’t going to be attending services. They are good with it. I wouldn’t mind finding or starting a home church in the future. Since making the decision to leave the “system” and feeling like such a heavy weight has been lifted, I feel more like “me” again and I’m finally getting a LOT of stuff done at home that I couldn’t seem to before. Not sure why the two are so connected. We are also working on our marriage and family. Our home had become a war zone it felt like. So we are using the time to reconnect and not feel guilty about not being in a building on Sunday. My husband is gone from 10 am to midnight all week and then Saturday he has to catch up chores like cutting the grass and we weren’t spending any time together. Pastor and his wife are coming by tomorrow evening to get some stuff I was getting rid of and I have to try and remember to put away my non KJV bibles before they get here or I’ll be the topic of a sermon even tho I’m no longer there. Lol!

I left the church building years ago. At first I knew it was the right thing to do. As time has gone by I knew that I was missing one of the most important parts "Fellowship".Yes having small groups you get some of it, but as time goes on it seems to be less and less of the church that responds to meeting elsewhere. Other than the building! Before you know it. The Evil Enemy has came in and caused isolation. So be careful when doing this. Also be careful who you are meeting with to fellowship with and study the word. It can really destroy yourself, your relationship with others and push yourself from your relationship with the Lord. Death is a snake and came to steal, kill, and destroy us all. He will use this time to go at that most important relationship. Where 3 or more gather in my name. So make sure you and 2 others are strong in your knowledge of the word!! So he can't destroy the whole reason you left the building..!!

The pandemic has taught me how integral the local church is to the believer. The church to me is encouragement, fellowship, and accountability. It’s the icing on the cake. It intensifies what I’m doing in my own relationship with God. You should seek God for yourself, but i also think the enemy works in isolation and division. If you are not plugged in with other believers and being taught the word of God. Think there is a tendency to create your own God. I also think our culture doesn’t like to be submitted under any kind of authority. We like to do our own thing. Which is where trouble can start.

Spiritual growth comes from fasting, praying, studying and being a doer of God's Word. In the scripture that you mentioned about assembling the church was being heavily persecuted and many were turning away from God and so they were told to keep coming together to encourage one another. The problem is Catholicism. This is why there are 10 churches in the same neighborhood who believe and worship the same Jesus but divided by buildings..

No one can act in willful disobedience to clear commands of God to gather as a body (Heb. 10:19-25... notice how the verbs pronouns are plural) and submit to leaders (Heb. 13:17... who are your leaders if you’re not gathering?) but have an improved spiritual life. Someone might FEEL that they are, but if it’s true that we can walk in disobedience and simultaneously see improved relationship with Jesus, why would it only apply to missing church? Maybe I should start and maintain an adulterous relationship and see how it blesses my prayer life? Maybe if I start stealing, God will bless my tithes and offerings, huh?

@@MrAntiOrdinary I see the point you are making. I don’t disagree with you but I wonder if you have fully considered what was shared. Poor application can pervert the purity and purpose of the church. @@minbrprice I'm not at all sure what your second sentence means. Apart from that, I am stating facts: you cannot step into blatant disobedience AND see an improvement in your spiritual life. That should not be controversial. Stepping away from one church where there are unhealthy practices/teachings is what we hope EVERYONE would do if they discover something unbiblical. But leaving a church with false practices isn't improved upon by skipping church altogether. We applaud persons leaving unbiblical churches to find biblical ones. We warn persons who leave unbiblical churches and then assume sound ones are hard to find to the extent that they are no longer searching but "satisfied" with so-called growth apart from God-ordained worship/fellowship with believers.

I’ve watched the two episodes and took heed the advice to wait for the second episode. I also took the moderator’s advice: “we need to become listeners; we need to learn how to listen before we speak...” Lisa also noted “when we listen, we can correct our behaviors”. I don’t know how many episodes there are in this series. However, I am convinced as one goes from one segment to another, one could comment and/or clarify that which might be basic misconceptions as what is the church, for example. This can be done without judgement but the responsibility of each believer to correct or give an answer. “The church is a fellowship, an assembly of believers, where the Scripture is rightly divided, where the gospel is taught and proclaimed, and the ordinances are rightly ministered.” - Pastor Matt Chandler (I hope I quoted him correctly...). One must point to Scripture what the church (ekklesia = ek + kaleo = the called out ones) is. I have heard the reasons for leaving of the brothers and sisters that seem to point to 1) failures/shortcomings of staffs, possibly, leadership, 2) theology and doctrine. I heard what they enjoyed in the church and the Word, its teaching, preaching and proclamation is not mentioned at all. In the points above, if the Word is taught then Biblical principles like church discipline should/would have been applied for example in point #1. Or, faith questions or theology of church would have been addressed in point #2. My prayer for our guest panel would be that they find a local church where the Word is rightly divided and faithfully exposited. A right understanding of Scripture compels us to worship in Spirit and truth. It would drive us to God-glorifying service both inside and outside the church. Each believer is called out by God and are purposely planted to a local church. This is the norm that one would see in Scripture (look at the epistles and the book of Acts). Apologies for the long comment... first timer:-)

I spent many years not going to church for various disappointing reasons. I have never been religious nor followed man-made denominational rules. What I discovered is that church is messy and full of personal opinions, not the gospel that Christ preached. Now that I know the influences and deception many church folk are under, I can return from a posture of being helpful to those who want to know the truth and live a victorious Christian life. I miss fellowshipping and look forward to going back when it's safe to do so.

If I can add my own comment. I stopped going to church because I grew up in church being a 'PK'. During my time at church I realised that my relationship with God was dwindling. But to be honest it was never there in the first place. I had confused religiousity with knowing God. I didn't like being woken up every Sunday because it felt like a chore. My heart has not been in church for a long time because I am awkward by nature and have had plenty awkward interactions with people at church. I didn't feel a part of the church community because I had no faith and no relationship with the people either. I left my church during lockdown. How am I doing? I am struggling...prayer is hard. I can't get 5 minutes of solid prayer time. The flaws are finally showing. I have been playing a Christian all this while. If you understand how I feel please Please pray for me.

If I buy a pair of shoes I like and when I get home I realize the shoes don't look or feel as good as I thought they did, I'm not going to throw the shoes away and never wear shoes again. I'm going to return them and continue looking until I find the right pair. I believe a lot of people go to church for the music and the word and then they go back home. They go to receive and not to give of themselves in any way. If that was all I was going to church to do, I wouldn't go either. Ministry is what brings me to church on a regular basis. The usher ministry or praise team, men's or women's ministry, outreach ministry, etc. These and other ministries allow you to give love to others by serving them. God told us to forsake not fellowshipping because being around like-minded Christians and allowing iron to sharpen iron will help you grow and mature as a Christian. The other reason we go to church is to be refueled so we can go back outside the 4 walls and tell somebody about Jesus. God uses people to help people. If you're not connected to a home church or even a home group, your isolation will hinder your witness and your ability to help others spiritually. I've seen the lack of growth from those in my extended family who no longer go. It's obvious, but they don't even realize it. Find a church that fits your size and get to work serving God and His people.

As long as you’re in a church that allows you to do that. Sitting in a chair for 2 hours hearing the same message on repeat for 15 years, giving the same person all the tithes until they become a millionaire & sustaining their millionaire lifestyle was not at all blessing anyone, but feeding my own religious ego & the pastor’s ego & promoting a false works based money hungry religion. This is happening in nearly every “word of faith/charismatic/prosperity/spirit filled” church in America sadly.

D Ray, you have to start with the premise the Greek word use by Jesus and in the Septuagint for Israel - ekklesia, translated as church but better translated as congregation. It was used for when there was a local matter to be discussed and handled, the people were called out to meet, discuss and handle the matter then disburse. It was not religious nor was it a weekly assemblage. It was more secular. There was a Greek word for regular religious gatherings like we see with churches today, thiasos. That word was never used in the Bible. So if you remove the religion, the doctrine, and the religious viewpoint when studying the Scriptures, you can see the point behind those verses you mentioned. Eph 4:11-15 shows that there would be wise and experienced Christian men who could help Christians reject harmful philosophies on how to conduct their LIVES. Jer 3:15 discusses shepherds or leaders who would help the Israelites LIVE on a daily basis according to the Law (nothing religious there). Rom 10:14 is in context of getting out the message about Christ (vs 17). Even in the 1st century a person could become a Christian the same day they heard the message about him. (Acts 16:30-34) There are billions of people who have heard the message about Christ today. Again, Christianity in the Bible has nothing to do with religion.

@@freevee5974 When we say, "the church" did this or didn't do this, we have to clear because, we serve the Living God. We are the body of Christ, we are the church. We don't need the construct but, we need the fellowship. We need that second and third cord in Ecclesiastes 4:12. Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. Proverbs 27:17 KJV So complete autonomy is bad. Even when Paul was imprisoned, he kept in constant communication with the communities and Luke and Timothy.

But we’re telling you there are issues in the structure of the church. Why would people go back to a place that has hurt them when the structure is still the same? That’s insanity. Doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results. A change needs to take place amongst leadership in order for the church to mirror what Christ intended His church to be.

I love when you said “The greatest apologetic tool is listening.” In my experience, when I’ve gone to people (especially church people) to have a conversation about an issue, they always find a way to dismiss or spiritualize what you have to say. They demonize and maintain this judgmental and critical stance to make themselves look like the “good guy.” Instead of listening and offering a genuine apology when they’re wrong, they result to crazy-making behavior and act surprised or shocked that you brought their mess into the light. I learned some great things in the church, but have also learned the hardest lessons.

@Omar Savory that’s not absolutely true. It’s true in some cases. The Catholic religion has many ways that are not biblical. For instance praying to Mary, confessions to priest, and praying to the saints. There’s no scripture that supports that. Also they believe that the pope is the only person to interpret the Bible. The Bible refutes that notion as well as there is no private interpretation of the scripture. They believe priest cannot be married? Where does the Bible say that. There’s a reason why the Protestants left the Catholic faith because there was a lot of pagan traditions that were going on. In my opinion where is the unity of faith in the body of believers. Too many denominations which makes it confusing for unbelievers, that weakens the church in my opinion. There’s a lot of vain traditions that are man made in all denominations. The church in all needs to go back to the basics of the Bible.

Let's call a spade a spade. There are a lot of 'church people,' who find pleasure in belittle others for the choices they've made. The church has cast systems just like any other culture. There is way too much competition in church. For example, my church community obsessed over who was going to what school, who had the best career, clothes and who was next in line to get married, who was divorced and who was having babies. As a young woman growing up in church I was bullied because I came from humble beginnings and I was always a bit shy. So I never had the best clothes or hair do and I was always made to feel like I was never good enough in the eyes of people who attended that church and even in my own family (who often compared me to people in church). As an attempt to save my mental health I left church about 6 years ago. My life drastically improved. I'm engaged, debt free and looking forward to the future. My connection with God did not falter. Happiness, joy, peace is not attached to a building...especially if that building focuses its attention on 'popularity,' and gossip rather than ensuring the right amount of soul food is being served to those who really need it.

And the Pastor IF he is godsent is there to help you with you walk. The Bible say “how can you hear without the preacher, and how can he preach if he is not sent”? If that Pastor is Godsent he will help you with your walk in God. God places other believers in our lives to help us with our walk of faith, to hold us accountable. But much respect to them for sharing their stories. Also to us Christians if we are not doing what we were called to do we need to start.

Hebrews 10 vs 24-25 it never stated that we had to gather at an actual church building we are the church so if we choose to meet at a coffee shop a park or at someone’s home we are not forsaking the assembly. @@willgretzky5156 Now you see the point of my comment. MANY speak the word with zeal but lack Knowledge and the understanding within. People are using man made opinions to justify unrighteousness things. First, how do you know if the Pastor is send from God if you, yourself don’t know if you are saved? 2. People love to mingle. Church is just a scapegoat for that purpose. Once these people leave out, they go right back to their sinful life’s. 3. What we are called to do as “Christians” (a word that is another created opinion) is to tell the Truth! Everything you see regarding church is proof there is a lack of understanding of the scriptures due to people respecting persons. Another thing scripture warns. Thank you for allowing me to place this lesson in the comments.

Referencing a building is a moot point. The real issue is the Biblical principle of committing to being a part of a local Body of Believers under the regular preaching, teaching (via Pastoral/Deacon/Congregational Leadership) where there is ongoing discipleship , fellowship, worship, evangelism, celebrating the Lord's Supper Counseling weddings, funerals, baptism, not to mention accountability and Church Discipline. After years outside my Religious cell & years of truth seeking & peaceful silence, i realized The "Christian Confession of Faith" sets the stage for emotional turmoil & depression in us. You verbally contract away your Birthright by accepting an idea of being born seperate from God when deep down you KNOW you were never seperate from God an as a child you KNEW you were connected to God long before someone bewitched you into believing you wernt. We confessed "unworthiness" then started chasing worth we felt missing. We surrendered the glory God gave us then spent decades searching for some glory we felt missing in our lives. Christian authir John Eldredge said, "The glory of God is man made fully alive!" I agree✊🏽 Finding nothing to quinch our thirst we beg God why? But truth is God was always rt behind your eyes, feeling what you feel an creating from your will😇

Respectfully My Opinion 1. Yes, a personal relationship with Christ is most important above all else 2. Yes we must learn to Listen to others more before we jump to respond....Listen to Understand. But we can't leave it at just listening. 3. We have to learn the difference between "Judging to Condemn" and "Judging to Convict". The bible says that Judgement begins at the house of God, and so we must judge each other according to the Word of God so that we may all be held accountable for our actions. 4. As the bible teaches, we still must not forsake the "Fellowship" of the saints. That's the whole purpose of going to Church. 5. The church is a hospital, so understand that it will be full of people who are full of issues, problems and mistakes. No church will have it all together, you have to accept that some things you just won't like. I do agree that some things can push someone away from a church, but it shouldn't push you away from Church altogether.

When I saw "Leaving the Church" in the title I initially thought they were leaving the body of Christ but, now I see they're leaving the congregations they were apart of (which is perfectly fine). Not all congregations are healthy, not all are biblical. I would encourage anyone to leave an unhealthy (toxic, abusive, manipulative, heretical) congregation and seek a healthy biblical one. The key is for us to join a community of believers. If it were meant to be a road traveled alone the Apostles (being led by the Spirit of God) would have never planted churches nor would they have bishops (e.g. Timothy and Titus) nor teachings on who to select as Bishop, Elder, and Deacons, etc..

In the scriptures there was a woman named Martha and she was caught up in her feelings. She didn't like the way the house church was being run. She wanted to be heard, and Jesus listened to her. Then Jesus redirected her back to His Word, because Jesus felt that listening to the Word of God was more important, and more transformative then her complaints(Luke 10:38-42). To hear people voice their displeasure, and not redirect them back to Jesus is a missed opportunity. Only Jesus can fix what is broken. We are God's farmers, we scatter His Word like seed. We don't determine the soil, we plant. God makes it grow. Maybe he activates the seed we planted today, may He waits and turns it on tomorrow, or ten years from now. The Word of God flows through our spirit drenching it with living water. God's word is a yeast, that works it's way through the discontentment within our hearts.

I hear what they're saying.I don't currently go to church, but I too have a strong relationship with God. However, I do believe there's a level of spirituality we won't be able to reach without fellowship. There's something about church culture that is off-putting. I've tried different church's myself, and I've always felt like I don't belong. I feel like I need to watch what I say around people, and I absolutely hate that. It doesn't feel like people genuinely ask about you because they want to know you or build a relationship with you, but rather it feels more like they trying to get a read on you so they can categorize you. It's frustrating, especially because they Bible emphasizes fellowship throughout scripture. And the purpose of fellowship is to build one another up. 'As iron sharpens iron' (Prov 17:7) and 'two are better than one' (Ecc 4:9). So, I'm still trying to figure out the church thing.

John 4:24 kjv "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." I left church to basically clear from their influence, to get it right and follow the holy spirit. Its amazing how mamy other so called believers have a problem with the biblical beliefs ive come to. Makes me realise why theres churches. The people that judge you for leaving are probably the same ones unwilling to leave the heresy in their owm church.

Allow my cynicism for a moment, but this shows how much discipleship is important. And also strong understanding of the bible. Personal reading and studying of the bible on the believer's part and extensive teaching on the church's part. I did not have much information on the discussion to off on this 7 minute piece. On one part do not forsake the assembly, on the other part spiritual growth is not quantified by church attendance. Discernment is needed to distinguish between judgment and constructive criticism.

There is a reason why now more than ever church members are becoming few and it’s because of a great awakening. It is important, especially for black people that we understand God is on the inside. We should know that we are not separate from God but that God is experiencing life through our physical vessels. God doesn’t just use us in moments of divine intervention, but God is using us everyday all day 24/7. God is consciousness, infinite intelligence, and all that is and ever will be and so is the spirit within the human soul. Eternal, without a beginning or an end. God is inside. Always has been and always will be.

Theirs a lot of burden for folks who think they are giving up on God if they leave the church. When I realized that it was man made structural notion, I became free. Left the church and will never go back.

They aren‘t anti religion. They are just saying aspects which someone like you didn‘t want to hear or accept, period! If they feel or think like that it is their own opinion and no one should jugde them or say because of that they are anti religion! The fact is Christians like you feel after this statement offended because they do not realise that what they say it‘s true. I am a Christian and me myself I didn‘t go to church anymore because things happens their what is not okey for example: hate, hypocritical and other stuff! And for me I say to myself I cannot live this fake life and from this time my life is still going perfectly on without going to the church-> So because of that I am now anti religion, okey! And by the way even when I am not going to church I still praying, have my quittime and biblestudies at home!

@@rhodacm97 religion won't save anyone, only a relationship with Christ. You assumed I was offended but I'm not. From what I could tell each person was pursuing a relationship with Christ and that's why I said there's nothing wrong with rejecting religion or traditions or even customs associated with Christianity. With respect to the subject of the interview, we are commanded to fellowship with each other. But that could be done in casual settings like a home or even Starbucks 😊.

I am still in a church, but I’m also learning that not everyone you go to church with is going to be a Christian. Unfortunately, we live in a world where we can’t find God by going to church. You find God on your own and by your own relationship with the Lord and unfortunately, the Bible does warn you in Romans 16:17, if people get between you and your relationship relationship with God, it’s best not to be a part of that community. My only encouragement, is find a church that truly embodies the things that bring you to the truth as a Christian. Don’t neglect to meet with other Christians and don’t completely leave church altogether. Churches exist for a reason and we are commanded to go to church, but it doesn’t necessarily mean all churches are healthy. Also, not all parts of the church are healthy, and distinguished which people to associate yourself with and which people not to. I am learning this the hard way and it’s a long journey for me to associate myself with certain people I go to church with and not associate myself with some people I go to church with. Your personal walk with God is always gonna be the most important. It does not matter how terrible people treat you in church because the Bible does provide wisdom and what to do in those situations. However, we always treat everyone with love and care, including our enemies. This means giving the level of respect that all Christians are to give to every person. Not all people are going to be respectful toward you as a believer. And not all people are going to treat you with the level of respect that you should be receiving from them, but this doesn’t mean you disrespect them and seek vengeance on them. Just because a part of your church is toxic doesn’t mean the entire thing is bad. However, always have good leaders in your church and when your leadership is not toxic, but maybe the part of your church is, those are the people you’re gonna want to maybe not put as much time into. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that we disrespect those people in a way that dishonors the god that we believe in. Loving her enemies and loving the people that are hard loving our church challenges are ability to become better Christian. Just keep this in mind when you’re choosing not to go to church because maybe you’re just in the wrong church. There is a book that can show you what a healthy church looks like and when you feel like your leaders actually care. This is where you’re in a good church. Doesn’t necessarily mean every person you go to church with is always going to be good though. We need to keep this in mind and there are ways to respond to toxic people we go to church with.
