Moo Deng is actually a side dish food which literally translates to bouncy pork. We Thai people have a habit of naming anyone or anything cute with food dish. Her older brother and sister's names are also name after pork dishes. Her older sister's name is "Moo Wan" which means sweet pork. Her older brother's name is "Moo Toon" which means stewed pork. Moo Deng also have a cousin name Kagi which is another stewed pork dish. We have the whole Moo family here.

@@KS-wp3cs yeah, I took the liberty of using _pig_ instead of _pork_ because when people name animals after a food there’s usually an implied cuteness to it. Like, “Chicken Nugget” and “Tater Tot” are common pet names in English because they’re widely regarded as “cute-sounding” foods. For English speakers, _pig_ is seen as a more positive word than _pork_ - and lots of folks use “pig” or “piggy” as a fond nickname for their dogs (mostly dogs with squished faces like pugs, bulldogs, and bull terriers).

I think there's actually a fairly comprehensive list of zoos that engage in ethical conservation. As Hasan mentioned, the age of zoos for pure spectacle is kinda dying. They still exist, obviously, but they're increasingly more unpopular due to public awareness campaigns and a lot of basic empathy (For some reason, most people... including myself... have an easier time being human with our consumption when it comes to the mistreatment of animals). A lot/most zoos transitioned into conservation projects that use either captive bred or un-releasable animals as ambassadors to raise awareness. Captive bred animals can't be released for their own safety, as they wouldn't have the skills available to fend for themselves, and un-releasable animals are usually either too injured to survive in the wild, or suffer some disability that would also make survival too difficult.

I think the question is though whether it's ethical to use ANY animals for this. They're still living in too small a space in captivity and in front of crowds of humans gawking at them.

@@littlemissmelloI think you are missing a big part. I’ve seen many ambassador animals rescued from the illegal pet trade. What is more ethical than to put them in zoos? There are also zoos that have breeding programs that are used to try and save wild populations. I think overall zoos are a great thing, but need to be managed with ethics and animal welfare as first priority.

@@monkeydance3894 it's a small minority of animals that come from harrowing backgrounds like illegal pet trades and practically the breeding of animals almost never leads to the saving of endangered species, especially if the environment that made them extinct is not changed. Zoos with a profit margin are very good at making it look like it's all necessary, and most people working at zoos genuinely love animals a lot, but zoos don't work like you say.

@@littlemissmello a lot of zoos nowadays don't really do that. The enclosures have about half their space in the back (meaning they are twice as big as what you see) and thats where the animals will hang out when they don't wanna be around people, or just because. Its also pretty common for any animal demos to select a more gregarious specimen to introduce to people when thats a thing. Not all animals are afraid of humans, some are actually quite friendly and enjoy interacting with us. It just depends on the animal's temperament. Just like with humans

I work for a zoo. Most large scale public zoos, at least in major American cities, have extremely strict guidelines and practices and most if not all animals in exhibits are there for specific conservation efforts. We just had 9 Mexican wolf pups, 5 went to sanctuary’s to prepare to be let into the wild, 2 went to other zoos, and the last 2 stayed with us. Zoos themselves are very delicate ecosystems that acting supplementary to natural habitats, and stupid ignorant people looking for something to get mad don’t understand this. There’s a significant difference between Steven Irwin and his zoo, and someone like Joe Exotic.

Let’s be real hippos, rhinos or orangutans wild populations are under so much pressure in the wild that any birth in a conservation center/zoo is a good news. what’s needed isn’t to ban zoos it’s to ban palm oil plantations, deforestation, mining in those places as there’s whole ecosystems to protect not just large mammals but that would need strong political will across the globe which we likely won’t get before those mammals become totally extinct in the wild (with a few remaining in centers able to produce offsprings to be reintroduced)

Fact check: Pygmy hippos are only 1/10th the size of Nile Hippos. It's Nile Hippos, which are much bigger and more dangerous. Pygmy hippos are not known for aggression. They are solitary creatures that live in small pockets of rainforest in West Africa.
