Seeing raw footage of the DNC really demystified it a lot for me. It's hard to resist the conclusion that the attendees are no different from any other professionals at a networking event. Kirk popping into frame really solidified it for me. In his attempt to be chummy with Hasan, it's almost as if Kirk hinted that, despite what you may think of him from his broadcast, this is just a job to him, and he is putting on an act to secure the bag. I would guess that he views Hasan as a peer who he merely has professional disageements with, not radical irreconcilable differences in worldview, hence they are both playing the same game, and behind the scenes/off camera, its appropriate for them to interact respectfully, perhaps even collaboratively (kirk may not have realized Hasan was broadcasting live at the moment). I assume this is an attitude that is pervasive within those media spaces, so he confidently aproached Hasan expecting a similar response. However, Hasan does not attend these events regularly and has not adopted the prevailing group norms and values, so the interaction was genuinely unexpected and resulted in his discomfort and confusion. In other words it felt like Kirk dropped kayfabe but Hasan was not in on the bit.
