Hasbro Marvel Legends vs McFarlane DC Multiverse

One of my favorite things about the McFarland line is the texture that all of the faux fabrics have! Soo detailed!

Something about the Mcfarlanes ones that looks less cheap and great on a shelf. Legends are great with the character selection and amount of accessories but I think that extra money must go on brand new sculpts and higher levels of details for Mcfarlane. I was initially hesitant to go for Legends at first because I was used to how highly detailed and less plasticy the DC ones were, but they're all great in the end I love them both, lets keep collecting!!

The last two McFarlane figures I got broke at the hip joint within minutes of opening them. None of my Marvel Legends figures have ever broken anywhere at all. Case closed.

I love the McFarlane line… but… I don’t want 75 batmen and 1 or 2 other characters. All McFarlane makes is batman and frankly it’s annoying.

I had heard that he was given requirements for which figures to make from DC. I'd be really interested in knowing how much truth there is in that. Even just from a sales perspective, I'd imagine they'd do better making some characters they haven't released yet instead of releasing the 26th batman.

@@randymonster4105 my problem isn't having weird characters or repeating characters in the line the problem is that McFarlane is only doing that. Marvel legends puts out such a Varity of figures that there is definitely something there for everyone. I have been able to build iconic teams for Avengers, Xmen, Fantastic Four and all their villains but with multiverse you only end up with a bunch of random characters from different stories and bunch of batman superman and joker figures no chance to build any cool displays or get the iconic looks for characters which arguably most people would want.

A big problem with Macfarlane is that they’re not giving us the classic characters first. Marvel Legends gives us obscure characters now but they were around for 20 years giving us classics first, but we have like two Dark Knights Metal waves but I’m pretty sure we don’t have a single classic Flash or Wonder Woman, no classic line up for the Justice League they just do whoever they want first and it sucks

DC could be the leaders but they're so far up the Bat-hole its unreal. I want to see Hawkman, Plastic Man, Zatana, not endless Batman variations. Even if Marvel Legend had sloppy paint and bits falling off them, I'd give them the win for what they give us in variation.

Marvel Legends. Not only do Mcfarlane's offerings suffer IMO due to his "artist's sensibilities" influencing his decision making, but scale is a big factor for me, and Mcfarlane doing a 7 inch line was an instant deal-breaker the moment it was confirmed. He could make the most amazing, stunning looking figure in that line and I still wouldn't drop a dime because it doesn't fit what I'm looking for. I know what I want, and Mcfarlane Toys doesn't make it.

You aren’t wrong at all. I hated to put all of my legends in a tote but I stopped buying them after I got into Neca, McFarlane, and Diamond Select. Ended up eventually getting the Hot Toys of the core 6 Avengers in the MCU but I’ll never be able to go back to 6 inch display the way I want to again and it sucks.

As I am an all around comic book geek who loves both Marvel and DC, both of the lines are awesome. In Marvel Legends I am annoyed by the fact that you have to buy characters you don't care about just to collect a BAF you want to have. In DC multiverse there are just too many Batmen. I really hope McFarlane is going to make more some villains soon

I prefer Mcfarlane over Marvel Legends. They both do different things better than the other though. Marvel Legends is more consistent with the BAF, have better wrist & ankle joints, have more variety due to being around longer, have more accessories & have better articulation. The downside is Marvel Legends are lazy with the reuse of the same body molds over & over again, they look cheap, some of the BAF don't fit the theme of the wave & not all their figures have the same articulation (this mostly applies to female characters) Mcfarlane has better sculpts with more details, they don't recycle the same body molds as much as Marvel but when they do they do a better job of adding enough to not make it look cheap, they have the same points of articulation, the figures are bigger so more bang for your buck, the figures look more stylish & when he does do a BAF it's part of a wave with a central theme. The downside is not enough accessories, head sculpts being variant figures instead of adding the head as an accessory, too much Batman (despite me loving it I still think more variety is needed) & the ball wrist & ankle joints. Overall I gotta go with Mcfarlane because for me the figures are all around better

I never really collected toys. I have a few toybiz Legends and a few Hasbro ones. Was never really a toy collector. But when McFarlane came in, I started to pick some of them up. Then came their Merciless wave. Now I have all their BAF waves. I have boxes and boxes of McFarlane with no room left to display them. My wife was also easy to convince for me to buy them cause she sees how beautiful they are. McFarlane are the BEST $20 toys in the market hands down. KZbinrs give them $#hit cause they have "horrible" articulation and proportion yet they compare McFarlane to Neca, Mafex and SH Figuarts which cost double to triple a McFarlane toy is.

I'm so used to the bight shiny plastic as aesthetic look for comic book coloring from marvel legends over the last decade. That I've been hesitant to get a lot of mcfarlane, but I'm really digging into it lately. Even if 60% of it or more is too mcfarlane grunge for me, like all their jokers are nightmare fuel. But they have broken a lot of retail barriers for vehicles and a playset in the past year. Got to respect that. Every figure also has that stand.

I liked to see Scruffy Dragon's Marvel vs. DC MUGEN stuff on the round intermission. I miss those guys. The shirt is amazing. I initially felt it wasn't all that fair a comparison because those DC figures were from MacFarlane's first wave, that Batman actually got quite hated reviews (the head being the major problem) And then David loved them anyway. Comparing to some of Hasbro's coolest pictures (in my opinion) and that actually feel flattering for DC. As mostly a DC fan, seeing such a Marvel guy like the DC figures so much made my day. I kinda expected bias, but he displayed model behavior as usual.

Detail and paint on ToddyMac figures are great. A good McFarlane figure is dependent on the character design, imo. Not all of their figures work well with their articulation scheme. Legends will often function the same regardless of character design. Sure, some get more features than others, but overall there is more consistent articulation across the Legends line. McFarlane looks better. Legends move better. Neither holds a candle to Storm Collectibles!

(Don’t get me wrong, you make some awesome points) However, If I could get the Marvel legends Hasbro’s business model, molding, overall figure construction, and character selection for DC, I would puck that EVERY TIME. I certainly would not trade away hasbros business model for mcfarlane’s for marvel figures. If hasbro took the DC’s license from McFarlane, I would be a happy man. (Just my opinion. I would really like to have both for Marvel. Getting the less poseable but unique sculpt with some paint and detail work for a few of my favorite Marvel characters (at around the same $20-24 price point) would be cool. But I do like the variety of characters from Hasbro...I think the only character I'd be ok with them pumping out a Batman equivalent # of figures for would be Ironman...I can't resist those.

I purchased the Last Knight on Earth figure line with the Bane BAF. Figures overall were gorgeous, but the Bane BAF was one of the most difficult to put together. Boil and Pop, WD40, and all the other tricks were needed, as well as just sand paper to make some ball joints slightly smaller. I would be hesitant to buy another BAF line, but McFarlane makes good figures. Now if McFarlane produces classic Legion of Superheroes at some point, I will be a buyer.

I have stuff from both of these lines, probably about 4x as many marvel legends and I don't really bother to compare them, they do different things. I will agree that a lot of times I feel like Marvel Legends figures look cheap, but I like that they offer different characters, even if it's just generally on the same bodies with head/paint swaps and not new sculpts. I will say that McFarlane has showed some improvement in their line already, so hopefully they continue to improve. I think it'd be far more interesting/fair to do a comparison of Hasbro's first few years with the Marvel license vs. McFarlane's line.

Good video Dave - I've collected legends for years but have a bunch of McFarlane DC figures which I quite like. The only real issue I have with them is scale - at around 7 inches they just don't look right with my classic Justice League display. Oh, and you mentioned a good BAF in a bad wave - it looks like McFarlane heard you with the upcoming Suicide Squad wave. At least you can buy King Shark separately - I'd love to see Hasbro take this approach more often.

a couple things. 1, you should have used 2 of the better mcfarlane figures, as opposed to 2 of the worst. they were the very first 2 figures mcfarlane put out, and since then he has tweeked the line, and with each new wave they are slowly adding extra hands, and more articulation to the figures. those first 2 figures, THAT batman and that superman, in my opinion, are the worst he has made. 2) mcfarlane uses PVC, and Hasbro uses ABS. now pvc is usually softer but with warp more. and you will find his weapons do warp easier. when it comes to finish, like shiny or more plastic looking, that is all up to the artist and the company. ya see, hasbro will engineer and design the figures, and when they are ready for production, they are outsourced to a different company to actually mold and build the figures. now, these plastic manufacturing plants have chemicals they can add to the plastic to give them different sheens. at no extra charge. like it literally does not cost more to have the figures molded in a matte plastic opposed to being shiny. but pvc usually DOES come out less shiny by nature. it does not seem like hasbro goes full matte finish on their legends line though. a good example of a matte finish on a hasbro line is the new g i joe classified series origins snake eyes figure. very very matte, shows exactly what they can do, but dont do, unless they are movie figures. and now that i think about it, im pretty sure that IS why hasbro does that, they save the matte matte finish to distinguish their movie figures from their comic line. and i believe mcfarlane does the exact opposite and uses a more shiny finish for their movie line

Seeing Alex Ross' art brings me back to the 90's! I like your points comparing posability and articulation, I'm guessing McFarlane gave a classic "respect" designing the dc figures with a little more texture, more statu-ish, it takes a bit from playability & posability, but I have classic superman and white knight batman, imo currently best McFarlane batman: facial expression and clean lines.

The only Mcfarlane figures I have are the three Witcher figures. They look good, but are slightly stiff. I thought about buying just the “core” DC characters, but I know myself well enough to know I wouldn’t stop.

I love Todd's figures but I have to say Hasbro makes better figures, they include a bunch of accessories unlike McFarlane with their Unmasked variants, DC figures don't include guns anymore which is just dumb in all honesty, better articulation on Hasbro's end and although McFarlane has a alot of good sculpting I gotta admit the detective comics #1000 to a lot of people and myself does not look good with the small head, I bought a DC Essentials Batman to go with my DC 7 inch. I love Todd's figures even back then when they were statues heck I don't even mind the 7 inch scale since a lot of DC Direct were 7 inch scale which I collected a majority of as well but Hasbro does better

There are plenty of Hasbro releases that do not include accessories. However 100% agreement on the articulation and McF's issues with getting heads/faces correct. The Hasbro face scan tech must be pricey haha.

Mcfarlane relies too much on Batman figures. Which is fine bc I love the Bat but I’m just trying to think of someone who isn’t into Batman- they won’t be pleased with Mcfarlane’s selection. Like there are probably 4 female figures made to date but I’m sure we will get more characters as time goes on.

Marvel Legends is vastly superior. The worst part of Marvel Legends is that they cycle through terrible body molds and the price point has been increasing, yet they aren't really doing anything to justify the price increase, like including more accessories and such. I'd love to get additional head sculpts and more hands for most figures. I also hate that MCU Spider-Man figures never get wallcrawling hands. McFarlane is a mixed bag. The sculpt and paint applications on most of the figures are typically amazing, but some of the head sculpts are horrendously bad and they've started to have head sculpts that are looking off to the side, which I think is pretty stupid. If you're going to have heads that are looking either left or right, at least include another head that is looking straight. The articulation is serviceable, but it could be so much better. Very few figures have additional accessories and most come with just one set of hands that are already on the figure, which really hurts the line. I hate seeing McFarlane figures with either trigger figure hands (for characters that don't even use guns) or cupholder hands. I'm so tired of seeing cupholder hands... Different heads, hands, and accessories would benefit this line a lot. I'd also prefer the figures to be 6-inch scale because most of my figures are six inches.

I am just starting to start my figure collection for these lines. Actually that isn't quiet true, I have Superman Unchained and Hellbat. I am scared at how much money I am going to blow on these figures. My plan is to minimize by being choosy with which sculpts, popularity and theme. With Mcfarlane my theme is figures that are variant from the standard figure so any look that doesn't look mainstream. With Legends I am going for nostalgia, 80's - 90's characters I read as a kid. I don't know how well I'll hold out and i'll break my rules a few times depending if I see a character I really really want.

Marvel legends is like iPhones. Mcfarlane is like android. Marvel legends, like IPhones, are really well made standard figures, with a few well made standard features. They don’t stray away from their business model, but the model is proven to work amazingly well. And because of that system, like IPhone, Marvel legends is a household name, always at the top. mMcfarlane is like android, sometimes a bit all over the place, very hit and miss. Like android phones, McFarlane has so cool aspects, but sometimes, their construction can be a bit clunky.

Marvel Legends are so damn expensive even tho there's nothing inside the damn box, it's just one figure and an extra hand for 50 bucks meanwhile with McFarlane, you get so much for so little, like the figure with 2 extra hands, accessories, card, and stand for like 15 bucks

Thanks for the review (a year later for me haha). That being said, here's my take a year later. I am super late to the game. I have nostalgia and nerd loyalty mostly to Marvel. However, the only things I collect that are recognizable to adult collector communities are GI JOE Classified and Transformers G1 characters in Masterpiece scale. I had a few ToyBiz Legends way back but fell out of collecting probably for a decade or more until recently. I want to get back into getting some "modern" Marvel Legends and building a decent collection but also want some of the iconic DC characters. I know being this late, I'll have to pay more on the secondary market for many figures from both lines. The thing is every time I look at the DC figures, they look cheap, dull, and stiff to me. I want to go for it and just "break the ice" so to speak but I get that feeling every time I look at the DC figures and refrain from spending the money so I am very surprised the McFarlane line had so many high points with you. EDIT: What line are the TMNT figures behind you from?
