I bought a new return from eBay for cheap. What I found was one entire bank of igbt's were shorted. The cause was POOR SOLDERING on one of the driver transistor pins. Easy fix and I still have the plasma cutter. As always thanks for sharing your talents and skills. Always an interesting lesson.

Some self-protected MOSFETs did the same to me too last year when I replace them in a place of Generic MOSFETs ... I had to blow two of them to realise my mistake ... It was a painful experience but I'm glad I learned from my mistake

Thanks for this! I'd like to point out that some cheaper meters don't have enough voltage to turn on the gate. I don't know about IGBTs, but I've seen this with MOSFETS. I have a cheap variable voltage current limiting supply and it does the trick! I like how you have the data sheet just below the part. A great visual aid! I still kind of new in this level of electronic repair. I've yet to work with IGBTs.

Very clear and concise videos, awesome patient easy to follow teacher. Makes it easy for people like me with zero electronics knowledge. Question for you dear sir , say you have a mosfet welder inverter machine and mosfet dies , can you replace with IGBT? Also what is the main reason these IGBT and mosfet break in welding machine? Is it heat or maybe component specification too weak / underrated for the current and power in those machines ? Can you replace with same type but higher amperage rating? Sorry for so many question this just really eagers me to know for when my Chinese inverter Tig machine or plasma cutter and mig welder break so I can know how to repair. Best wishes , health happiness and blessings from Ontario Canada! I look forward to hearing back if you see this , if not it’s ok I will just keep watching you and trying to learn on my own I guess . dear brother i am thankful for your valuable comment yes we can replace mosfets with IGBTs, just we need to re-arrange gate driving circuit, so that the gate must charge / discharge properly. oaky i noted it and i will try to do a practical tutorial on calculations and swapping the MOSFETS with IGBT and vice versa there are too many parameters for the failures of power semiconductors, i will suggest to watch video number 502 in my channel, that is on the reasons for IGBT failure

Thanks for the detailed info. Between 3 - 4 minutes you touched gate and emitter with Red probe on gate and black on emitrer hence the resistance should not be high or OL as you charged the gate and didn't discharge before you checked resistance between C & E around 3:55 ? Thanks

Thanks Mr Haseeb for your knowledge and assistance. I was brought a Kema Inverter to repair but I suspect the IGBT pair in the synchronous active rectifier are not matched or the same, as the High Frequency solar inverter rises to 240 volt AC output then after 3 minutes indicates F14 fault which I think means low Bus voltage output. I suspect it is interfering with dead time control. What do you think could be the problem, thanks? All gate drive circuitry including resistors, optocouplers and diodes including Zener diodes test fine.

My confusion is when you're testing the 'resistance' how do you know the reading is accurate? Where on the data sheet does it state 117.3 KOhm is the expected value? I have some IGBT's I pulled from a Godox AD300 and they seem to be fine. Their resistive value is 179kOhm, but the replacements (Mouser) are only 102KOhm. Some are 99KOhm. Are these good or are they defective? Thank you kindly.

first possibility, that the IGBT is falsely marked (ot original part) second check the dc motor (may be its center is out, check its rotation by rotating it manually, and observe that shaft must rotate in center, if it is out from its center, it will need centering by machinist or add weight by balancing machine, so its rotation must be smooth ) check the bearings of the motor must be smooth and soundless check the Carbon brushes and if possible clean the commutator

Yes you can. in this case you have to re-consider gate drive components for proper charging & discharging of the gate for its smooth functioning.

Thank You for helpful video. Is it OK to use current limiting supply to test MOSFET's and IGBT's on bench?? For example: adjust supply voltage and current within spec of IGBT, connect supply across emitter and collector. Then, charge gate and observe current flow and voltage drop. Then discharge gate and watch open (maybe use scope). Might this expose leakage or sluggish response?? Or the resistance and diode test is enough??
