Thank you Sir, Extremely good video and very patiently expressed on how to test IGBT. I have seen this video almost 5 times as I am preparing for my marine ETO's oral examination and this video has helped me a lot. So my special thanks to you. Also I like your dog very much, reminds me of my darling Labrador Justus.

Thank you for explaining this so well for electrical ignorant ppl like me. I’ve spent 48 hours trying to figure these things out on my welding machine. At least I can test it properly now and understand what’s wrong if anything there. Maybe if someone sees this… primeweld TIG 225 made a pop noise from the ground clamp. Probably bad ground.. no burn marks inside the machine anywhere at all. Did not trip the initial mini breaker on the machine rated 60A. Did not trip the breaker in my building rated 40A. Did however trip the breaker in my main supply breaker box outside about 50 yards away from the building, supplying the building separately from my house….this breaker is rated 50A. There is no other appliances or lights connected to the 220 breaker in my building that the welder was hooked to but there were several other things running inside the building. There was “corrosion?” on the big boy breaker outside… the huge circuit breaker that power from the poles comes to first. Anyway, now the welder won’t even turn on… nothing. I hook my plasma cutter up to the power supply and seems to work fine. Power supply seems ok. Mini breaker on the welder allows power to pass through when switched on… I guess that means it’s ok too? Any help would be much appreciated. I dare not take it to a repair store and not know what’s wrong with it beforehand. Amazing welder other than this btw 🤗. I have a feeling it’s not even the welding machine’s fault that it’s broke. Oh the welder is like I said primeweld TIG 225 AC/DC P … not the newer version TIG 225X, but I’m like 80% sure the only difference there is the pedal it come with.

Question: isn't it possible, when testing high voltage IGBTs, that the multimeter may not have enough voltage to test if the component is failing at higher voltages?
@electrotec71138 ай бұрын
Yes, most people don't have access to that testing equipment. These tests will work for 9 out of 10 failures though. I've tested a lot of bad IGBTs over the years, and this shows a failure in almost all instances.

Please tell me, when checking the device, my modules seem to be intact, but when testing with a lamp, they open with a positive bias on the shutter and the lamp ignites, and if you remove the bias, they immediately close without holding the collector-emitter transition in the open state, is this correct or not?

Recently my machine filter capacitor 105k 630v burn which connect to IGBT. 8.25 charge G1 to E1 there is reading on C1 to E1 about 0.444. Once short there no reading. When i do charge on G1 to E1pin. I can't get reading between C1 to E1. Base on measure show 393 reading. After combine show 789. My IGBT only shiw 270 and combine show about 528. Im testing CM400DY-12nf Its could be igbt faulty?

Using dynamic testing is more accurate just connect an analogue ohm meter and set to x10k put red probe on emitter and black probe on the collector Now get a standard bench power supply connect black wire to the emitter and red wire to gate Now the ohm meter shows open When u increase the voltage on gate to 4vdc you see the needles starts to move showing a very high resistance as you increase voltage let's say 100mv per step you notice the needle reading lower ohm after 5.5v reach the needle is at full deflection 0 ohm This is the ohmic region of the collector emitter testing some defect igbt looks ok using multimeter diode testing But when testing using the gate voltage testing mentioned here The collector emitter ohmic region doesn't respond to the gate voltage increase . I repair bldc motor 3 phase bridges and its reliable everytime .
@electrotec71134 жыл бұрын
Excellent response! Thank you. You are exactly correct! The reason I didnt perform a test like that, was because a majority of newbies watching these videos do not have a variable power supply. But I agree, your description is more accurate.
@nassimkoubeissi58144 жыл бұрын
@@electrotec7113 Thank you sir I m specializes in Repair power electronic circuits Like a bldc motor driver circuit And power dc Ac inverter. Imagine you open a 15kv dc ac inverter and see a rack full of igbts I use this test to know which one is not working well . A bench dc power supply set a current limit as 100ma and star increasing voltage on gate A faulty igbt will show a response bouncing while constantly increasing voltage on gate This test doesn't affect or damage the driving circuit .

What does the arrow indicate on the diagram? Current direction?
@electrotec71135 жыл бұрын
The arrow indicates the direction current is allowed to flow for diodes. For transistors, it indicates the gate - emitter (base - emitter) junction and also the direction of current needed or voltage bias for IGBTs. All of this in the mindset that current flows from positive to negative (conventional flow).

I work with Variable speed drives, and i have a faulty one here displaying 32 Volts out when the drive is not powered on. Could it be a damaged IGBT ?
@electrotec71135 жыл бұрын
If the drive is powered off, where are you getting the 32 volt reading from? Is the DC bus energized?
@ifeanyijudah68845 жыл бұрын
@@electrotec7113 it's on the display of the drive. I haven't measured the DC Bus yet, i measured the drive output and the input of the step-up transformer, which the drive is supplying: it's barely 4V
