So about the UV glue not completely curing… One of the dentist types in our group explained this… Apparently it’s got to be completely anaerobic for a full cure so that very top layer of resin that’s in contact with the air never fully hardens. You can just wipe it off with a little bit of IPA if you’re worried about it being sticky.

Well that explains it...they don’t tell you that stuff on the packaging! Thanks Will

Beautiful P-40, you're not the only one who paints the green nav lights blue - as I can attest to the lens covers are blue in most cases (I know that from I was working on Harriers, etc.) - it was the yellow bulb that made them look green when lit up. It would also be cool if you did a video on how you box the completed models up for transport through the mail system.
@seanerk5kt94 жыл бұрын
Thanks James. My first video was how to package them....it’s a little outdated though as I’ve improved my method. It just so happens that I’m gonna box one up this morning so I’ll film it for you.

Could I get your advice on a couple things please? 1) how do I create custom masks? I'm building the Tamiya 1/32 P-51 (Blondie) and need to create the mask for the red on the front of the cowling and there are some tricky compound curves (never have done that before). And 2) how do you get the great weathering on your tires like you did on this P-40? Thank you so much for these videos...they really inspire me!
@seanerk5kt94 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob. I’ve got a video showing how I make masks with a Cricut vinyl cutter and in the painting episode of this build, I show how to hand cut the masks for the sharks teeth. For tire weathering, I often just use an airbrush with tans and greys thinned with isopropyl alcohol.

@@seanerk5kt9 So that works with Tamiya paints? 90+ strength Isopropyl...say 1:1? Sounds intriguing!
@seanerk5kt94 жыл бұрын
Yep, I use Tamiya paint for it. I thin the paint to 90 percent ipa to 10 percent paint and gradually build up to the opacity till I get what I like. It really doesn’t take much. I then spray a flat clear coat over it. You can do it with rubber tires but it’s pretty fragile on those so it’s usually best to weather them once they’re installed. Hope that helps.

Great videos and awesome work and explanations, when can we see a vid explaining your thinning and mixing ratios you use and at what psi for airbrushing?
@seanerk5kt94 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure how beneficial that would be because I don’t have a set ratio or air pressure as there are just too many variables (ie. Type of airbrush, size of needle, type of paint, method of paint application, even certain colors spray differently etc.). It really just takes experimentation with what your using.

Great channel! You have shown me some great methods. How do i make money with modeling? Where do your customers come from????
@seanerk5kt94 жыл бұрын
Thanks Phillip. You’re probably not gonna make much when you boil it down to a per hour dollar amount, but it is fun and allows me an unlimited amount of kits to build and pays for my supplies. I’d recommend start off by selling on eBay with your auctions starting at $1. This will let you know where the market value is on your work and might allow you to pick up commissions off of eBay. Or start a KZbin channel yourself, that helps also.

@@seanerk5kt9 thanks, I'll try e-bay. Never thought too much about the money, but I'm running out of room. It's a fun hobby. Your spray booth looks like mine, where is yours vented, do you wear respirator?
@seanerk5kt94 жыл бұрын
That’s the reason I started selling mine :). As far as the spray booth, I rarely turn it on...it’s just annoyingly loud and I don’t have it vented anywhere anyway. It’s right next to my window so I just open up the window and turn on a small box fan to evacuate the overspray. I do wear a respirator as well. Safety first!

You`ll get there mate, its all just time and practice, remember that a model is just a series of different surfaces that all come together as one. Break it right down too the basics and address each and every surface as a 'model' in itself, pretend that each part is a model, it will help focus the brain.

I guess I need to get away from dry brushing, the chipping method you do looks better. I stopped building Hase's P-47 due to lack of detail & that idiotic 4 piece cowling. Trumpeter's are a bit better. As long as you don't build anything past a D-25. Trumpy never updated the pits. Came out sharp, customer should be pleased. Yes, that is the Pitot tube or "P" tube.
@seanerk5kt94 жыл бұрын
There are a number of ways to do chipping. You could also use a sponge to dab in the chips. If done sparingly, it can look really good.

@@seanerk5kt9 I did not know that those lights to either side of the cockpit are to be painted blue. The instructions don't indicate any color. So the Revell kit you mention... is that the 1:32 scale kit? Because that one has a 92 on the box art. I also noticed that the camo pattern was not correct, but I didn't want to be a dingus and nitpick. I do not know who flew number 92 of the P-40Es since I don't have the pilot names in my book. Some of the AVG pilots had to go to Africa to get the planes and had to wait for the RoC roundels to be painted on before they were sent to China to replace several of the battered P-40Cs.
@seanerk5kt94 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s not correct. And yes you’re a dingus ;). The owner wanted it painted this way and knew it wasn’t accurate. It’s from the old revell 1/32 box art and the guy built that model as a kid so he was fond of this scheme. Here’s a fun fact, the flying tiger emblems on these were big stickers sent by Disney and they had to put varnish on them to keep em on. Here’s a link showing the color of the fuselage lights. Apparently the bulbs were yellow so the blue lenses made them light up green. Hope that helps with your build buddy. www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/AWA1/101-200/walk139_P-40E/images2/Mvc-024s.jpg

@@seanerk5kt9 Thanks for that link! I've never seen that website before. I had known that the Disney tigers were "decals" from what I've read. I didn't know about the varnish, but it would make sense because they were not stencils. The P-40s did not originally have them. It wasn't until after Pearl Harbor when they began actively attacking Japan and became famous that the Disney corporation make those stickers/decals.
