In defense of the Sun Sage argument: Apparently, Hashirama's cells are capable of photosynthesis. It's possible that he naturally absorbed sunlight (a type of Nature Energy) and achieved it in a way similar to Jugo's clan. But considering his Chakra control is perfect, he was able to stabilize the power rather easily.

That doesn't really defend it though, we already know kekke genkai is a genetic trait that is a part of and alters the wielders DNA when it develops/awakens. So naturally a kekke genkai that deals with plants would obviously have this trait, even Yamato and the white zetsu had that trait.

i would also like to look at the examples of the people he is dealing with and the situations he is in when he activates sage mode. From my understanding its usually around the person designated as his moon so seeing it at nighttime when they are fighting would make sense and with Madara's "death" it also kinda makes sense.

The only reason he o ly activates sage mode against only madara is because madara is the only one he has faced strong enough to need it, has nothing to do with the moon counterpart not to mention as stated it was only ever seen at night which makes no sense, heck the first time we see sage hashirama in the manga he hadn't even thought up the sun and moon reincarnation part yet that was years later.

If you think about it. His sage mode being only used at night makes the theory even more compelling since he only was fighting Madara. Madara was trying to nerf and get an edge over Hashirama in every possible way shape and form. So trying to nerf his Sun Sage mode by only fighting him at night makes the most sense. Like why would you actively choose to fight Escanor at noon 😂

I dunno if I remember correctly but the war arc main battle was somewhere at the Iwa-Suna border at the edge of a desert, so if Hashirama had Forest Sage Mode it would still be a nerf making him fight where there is no plant-life to manipulate and the earth is pretty rocky and solid. So that is also a viable option for an explanation

Seeing as we will likely never get an official answer to this question, I'm actually good to be on Team Sun. But I think it's far more likely that he's JUST a sage. He probably figured it out through wood release and he didn't need to have any kind of teacher or contract. Much like Jugo, he just **knows** how to do it.

Hashirama became the sun sage because he got tanned. As you see in Tobirama and Tsunade, a Senju naturally have light skin. So Hashirama got tanned and unlocked Sun sage mode

My opinion Hashirama's Sage Mode is a _Natural_ Sage Mode specific to him. He naturally draws in nature and has a deeper connection to nature than anyone else, hence his unexplained healing factor, his ungodly amount of seemingly endless chakra and his unexplained super special Kekkei Genkai in Wood Release. So I think that he and he alone has a _Nature/Natural Sage Mode_ and him going into his SM is as easy as breathing for him

I'm gonna say that hashirama is a ninshu sage. I think he dedicated himself solely to the old teachings of the sage of six paths. His fighting style lends itself more to that then regular ninjutsu fighting. Even his dream while yes is keeping in line with ashura it is closer to the ninshu creed then anything else. The idea actually comes from the fact that hagaromo is the only other sage that has a forehead marking. Yes the marking clearly represents a sharingan what if it's true meaning is just enlightenment. Enlightenment is commonly represented by third eye opening. Also it makes more sense for hashirama's head marking to lean more towards hindi and Buddhist meanings theb even chinese as a lot of his wood style attacks are also based around those religions. In essence I believe he is the only person to inadvertently be taught sage mode from the sage of sixth paths. What kind of sage that would make him I have no clue.

Something people often forget is that moonlight is actually just sunlight bounced off of the moon, so maybe hashirama can still activate sun sage during the night but in a weaker form, this would imply that we haven't seen hashirama at full strength yet. Or maybe it could be the case that sun sage mode is so powerful and hard to control that hashirama can only activate a weak version of it, this would also explain why Madara thought that sage energy was so easy to control. Hashirama having wood release would explain how he learned sun sage because I would imagine he would try meditating while sprouting leaves in his attempts to further his mastery over wood style, this would be like when naruto had toad oil lathered over his body to help him absorb nature energy. I can imagine a scenario where hashirama was meditating with sprouted leaves and noticed that his leaves where collecting a strange sort energy he hasn't felt before and as he tried studying it he collected too much and almost became like the sun. Because he has no master to teach him how to control nature energy and bonk him in the head if he begins to absorb too much, he would try to teach himself in different ways and in his research he would discover that the energy he is absorbing came from the sun so he tried doing his research at night and discovered that at night there was still sun nature energy, but a much lower amount of it, enough for him to transform but not enough for him to turn into a fire statue.

Also maybe part of being a sun sage is to be able to cause photosynthesis in plants to make them grow super fast. it would be similar to slug sage, snake sage, and toad sage combined to me. His sage mode shares commonality with all of them pretty much. The Key to Sage modes seems to be Sun oriented. The Sun is a limitless power bank and the moon focuses on prowess with things like Eye related jutsu. One is focused on raw power and the other on visual arts that thrive particularly in the night. Amatarasu is a black flame, Genjutsu is strongest on the mind at night (true even to real life as we see things that may not be there when darkness is present). It just fits the more you think about it. Sun sage is just the perfected sage mode compared to the others.

Well, my theory about Hashirama's Sage mode is that he was the ancestor of Jugo's clan, meaning that he was the first to awaken the ability to passively gather Nature energy, and passed it down through the generations until we get the Jugo clan. While he had massive amounts of Chakra therefore could control the nature energy passively absorbed, his descendants did not have that luck, that's why they rage out. Also Jugo's sage mode "curse mark" makes his limbs kinda resemble wood, and his affinity with nature and animals also give points to the theory. Furthermore that would explain why grafting Hashirama's cells to your body would give you that passive absorption, hence why Madara did it instantly, and why Danzou when out of chakra explodes into trees. Also it is possible that that is why Orochimaru was researching Wood kekegenkai, not for the wood Jutsus but for the Nature energy absorption

While it’s a stretch for him to be a sun sage, you don’t need the sun to be up to be effected by its energy. Take summer nights for example , while it is cooler at night it’s also still hot. Also, the moon gives off sun energy by reflecting it back to us making it visible.

I really like this sun sage mode theory a lot… My theory used to be he was a monk sage.. theory goes as follows: Hashirama growing up during the warring states period wanders around the land and stumbles upon a Buddhist temple that teaches him meditation, this is why most of his jutsu have names like “gracious diety gates” “laughing Buddha” and then his super 1000 hand canon is a Buddha statue…

by extension of this theory, he seems more like a wood/tree/plant sage? it matches up with him as a character and his kekkai genkai, and plants get their 'strength' from the sun through photosynthesis I feel like this just strengthens the idea of him being a plant sage, but rather than drawing his strength *FROM* plants, he has learnt to draw it in the same *WAY* that they do and creating the idea that he *IS* the plant. I honestly think that he is a sage because of his wood release, he was born in touch with natural energy literally and throughout the series plenty of other wood style users have popped up but none of them come even close to Hashirama's level. If i had to tie his sage mode to another character it would be Monkey King Enma since it's a summoning and has the same eyes and black circles around his eyes (not the same pattern tho) on top of that the 4 tails was called a sage (monkey), it would be nice since Enma is Hiruzen's summoning and Hashirama is his teacher, another thing is that it would be nice to have "Prime Hiruzen" have some sort of imperfect sage mode just like Jiraiya and Orochiramu. Why didn't Hiruzen use that mode against Orochiramu? He was stated to be mentally nerfed and because sage mode takes time, specially when your control over it isn't that great so it's consistent imo. Slug sage mode cause Katsuyu has healing? Hashirama was stated to have healing just because his name was Hashirama lol, not that big of a link there. Considering all of the key moments ocurred during Tsunade's reign it wouldn't really make sense for her not to use that sage mode if she had it, with her chakra control and chakra reserves it wouldn't make sense for her to be unable to get the mode either if it existed or Sakura, Shizune or Katsuyu herself to at least mention it. Before the retcon in Boruto about the seal i think that something like Tsunade being like "i created this jutsu to null the limitations of the SSM, am able to access the mode instantly after gathering the require amount of chakra" in a way, Byakugo works like the sage mode so giving Tsunade Byakugo and Katsuyu as her summoning kinda takes that possibility out of the window for me.

I really like the theory of him being a Sun Sage. It actually makes quite a bit of sense. We have talking dogs, talking snakes, talking toads, and a bunch of really special animals throughout. What if there are special plants/trees in the world as well? Like Hashirama, being able to use wood release, somehow came across a sentient tree that, decided to teach him sun sage mode? OR maybe he was curious to know why he was the only one to have wood release, and was trying to figure out all the possibilities of it, and inevitably learned it through meditation while in a forest (possibly the forest speaking to him at this point or something)

There's only one thing I have to say about the Hashirama Slug Sage theory; his healing factor comes his cells, not from being a possible slug sage. After Madara obtained Hashirama's cells he was able to survive being stabbed by Hashirama and live longer than he was supposed to. His cells literally regenerated so fast that the only definite things that could kill him are Planetary Devastation and Might Guy (in Night Guy). So there're only two things that can really make any sort of sense; Hashirama is a Wood/Nature Sage, or, as explained in your video, a Sun Sage. (which both are extremely unique and very cool)

My personal headcanon is that Hashirama is a woods sage. It makes sense given the fact that he has wood release, and Tobirama even said that Hashirama would constantly disappear into the woods for long stretches of time when the were kids. Its possible that Hashirama meditated underneath an ancient tree somewhere in the land of fire, and due to his kind hearted nature this tree mightve lent him some senjutsu chakra, allowing him to enter sage mode and maybe even teaching him wood release. Even more evidence to back this up is Hashirama's aesthetic association with the Buddha, and the fact that Siddhartha only attained nirvana after meditating underneath a bodhi tree for 40 days, and after which the tree had bent to provide him shade from the sun.

It has a huge world. and story yeah one piece may cover alot of characters. but it doesnt go out of its way to explain or even overly expain their powers. plus its a adventure story. but it does not explain much let alone overly explain powers of its characters. Most of all narutos powers are more explained worthy than one piece because yo u know in naruto all the powers are either chakra or nature energy(which is what chakra comes from), one piece you got characters with df powers, haki powers, rokushiki powers, random miscellanious powers, etc

Hashirama’s symbol on his forehead is the same symbol hagoromo has because hashirama is the reincarnation of ashura who was given the gift of the healing light by hagoromo. Mito Uzumaki was the first person shown to possess this; as a high ranking Uzumaki who was a jinchuriki of the 9 tails. Hashirama during the warring states period fought a lot of battles but was never shown to have used sage mode in all of his encounters with madara, not until their final battle which happened after he became hokage. I'm thinking he acquired sage mode after or prior to when he became hokage. If we're taking the slug idea. Hashiramas marriage was more like an arranged one, reason being the senju and Uzumaki were distant relatives. Hashirama, as the senju leader at the time, learned a lot of complex sealing jutsus from them(old uzumaki clan head). All sage mode bears risks. It's difficult to think that a foolish youth like hashirama would master such a technique without some form of guidance. Hashirama definitely had a master. We don't just know who. God level sealing techniques like "gracious deity gates" which he used to pin down the tentails were Uzumaki sealing justsus. They were also shown in narutos mental space with kurama under the 8 trigrams seal. The entire thing screams Uzumaki if we take the slug idea. Given the fact that he already had tailed beast level chakra and was already at the top of the shinobi world by then, Learning high level techniques would have been easier for him. There's so much mystery on hashi even his death wasn't clear.

The Eye of Ra is depicted as the right eye, while the Eye of Horus is depicted as the left eye. While the Eye of Ra is a symbol of the sun, the Eye of Horus is a symbol of protection and healing. I think both are very important to consider when floating this idea about Hashirama being a Sun Sage because it may be more about being a "True" Sage - unaffiliated with any nature other than maybe one being like... the Human sage.

Maybe the reason we only see hashirama's sage mode at night is during the day there's no need for it as the user is bathed in light but at night it weakens and they then have to pull from the stored reserves, hence sage mode

I like the theory that he learned it himself through wood release. And I think all Sage modes are supposed to represent the Sun; it's the sun that sustains the nature that you draw "nature energy" from after all. I think we could say all Nature energy is Sun energy that nature stores. When you learn it directly instead of through an animal your symbols become tied directly to the sun rather than the animal that taught you their way of doing it. Nice Theory! I like it !

Human sage seems to fit the best for me Similar to how Tobirama developed on his own, three insane jutsus, I'd like to think that Hashirama would've done the same through becoming a sage via his own work. Would also feel appropriate, as disappearing to an unknown place to learn sage mode sounds problematic during the dangerous times they lived in and to become a perfect sage at that, I would believe he'd have to take a ton of time to reach that point. Being away for so long wouldn't benefit the senju clan when he's a strong pillar for it.

I thought this was gonna be about character design. Toad sages get toad slants (horizontal) in their eyes and grow warts, snake sages get snake slants (vertical) in their eyes and fang like horns, but sun sages get bags under their eyes which look like shadows on a hill, with the "light" coming from the circle

My personal Headcanon is that Hashirama Senju was a Monkey Sage. If I remember correctly the Senju Clan was also called the "Senju of the Forrest" and so the are associated with a Biome where Monkeys could thrive. Also we know that Monkeys as Summoned Animals have a bond with the Sarutobi Clan. And the Sarutobis have close ties with the Senju. Hiruzen even knew Hashirama. Maybe Hashirama helped Hiruzen get that Summoning Contract? Or he got in contact with the Monkeys via a Sarutobi Member? Aside from that the is some symbolism since the Monkey King form Journey tho the West is associated with the Element of Fire it would make a certain sense if the first Hokage (Fire-Shadow) and de facto protector of the Land of Fire. Would have a connection to the King of Monkeys aka Enma (or his predecessor?).

His father with gold and his mother being said to be the real reason he's protected by the sand.
