Bring us back into your womb, Great Mother
Let us be reborn again
Composed and arranged by: Aya, Itamar Zakai, Joanna Selznick Dulkin
Lyrics: Aya, Joanna Selznick Dulkin, inspired by words from the Book of Lamentations (Eicha, 5:21)
Recorded live as part of the 2024 Zamru prayer artist summit in the Zucker Family Synagogue at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center, July 2024.
Artists:
Aya: Vocals and guitar
Itamar Zakai: Vocals and guitar
Joanna Selznick Dulkin: Vocals and guitar
Videography and editing: Gil Yishai
Second camera: Aviad Shtachelberg
Audio engineering, mixing, and mastering: Meidad Cohen
Production of recordings and filming: Amitai Mann
Aya, Joanna and Itamar wanted to create a prayer of longing for a better reality. All three felt connected to the idea of bringing the feminine aspects of the Divine into focus. The words from the end of the Book of Lamentations, Megilat Eicha, came to them: “Turn us towards You, Adonai, and we will return to You; make our days seem fresh, as they once were”. They decided to change the original wording into the feminine - Hashivinu instead of Hashivenu, using Shechina and Havaya - two forms of the feminine name of the Divine. They also added a third part in English: “Bring us back into your womb, Great Mother. Let us be reborn again”. This is their interpretation of the Hebrew - we are praying to return to the womb of the Divine, the Great Mother, for the renewed days of old to be a rebirth. It is a prayer for all of humanity to be allowed to begin again, to create a better world for us and our children.
