In composing this song, Yosef, Neta, and Revital were drawn to the liturgy of Yom Kippur with its call for introspection and personal accountability. One of the key sections of the prayers on Yom Kippur is the Vidui confessional prayer that is repeated throughout the day. We often things of the A-to-Z acrostic of Ashamu as the central paragraph of vidui but, as Maimonides (Laws of Teshuvah 2:8) teaches, the essence of this section of prayer is in the opening paragraph that immediately precedes Ashamnu, specifically the three words, “אבל אנחנו חטאנו,” “but in fact, we have sinned.” According to the Talmud (Yoma 87b), if one says those words from the heart, none of the other formulae of vidui are needed. The song begins with a wistful line that misses the point: “it’s not as if I can say I’m perfect and have never missed the mark,” but stops short of accountability. Only the second time through are the words, “aval anachnu chatanu,” spoken. This honest recognition opens the door to reconciliation and repair in the space of relationship-with one’s self, with God, and with one’s fellow.

Zamru is an annual peer program powering experiential, creative, and inquisitive exploration of prayer. The program investigates the role of prayer in our lives, within our community, and in the Jewish-Israeli rituals of the 21st century.
