The first and only time I encountered this camera in real life was a couple of years ago in Singapore. A local middle aged photographer has used it to shoot the city changing over a duration of about 15 years and his photos in combination were nothing short of stunning. Your video has been a nice reminder of that and triggered in me the urge to look for one again myself.

A thing I love in the XPan is that when you put in a roll it automatically rewinds all the roll, saving you from burning your images if you accidentally open the back. For every technical need (they always can happen) check for PP Camera Repair: he's based in England and is the only one person that can work properly on those film cameras. Enjoy your Xpan and thank you for sharing

I love XPans (and Mamiya 7's). They are perfect for harbors and bridges -- think Golden Gate Bridge from Fort Mason pier at sunset, or the Brooklyn Bridge at night, especially with fireworks. They're perfect for Arches National Monument and Monument Valley and never-ending telephone lines. Rolling hills of golden grain at harvest time or vineyards in the mist beg for XPan aspect ratio (24x65mm). They're excellent for long trains (especially going around big curved bridges), highways, train yards, and aircraft landing. They're great for marching bands or funeral processions going down a wide boulevard. They're good for pets stretched out in the grass, babies stretching on the floor, and bleachers full of fans at a football game. If you are near stands of Aspen trees in autumn, catch the layers of yellow above white above the forest floor, or come in close to get just a 'picket fence' of white tree trunks. Good for sand dunes, sea shores, and tree-lined lake shores. Counters full of brightly colored candy, assembly lines, and conveyor belts full of whatever you put on them. Long lines of gravestones. Roller coasters from a distance. Long cars shot obliquely. Vertically, climbers stretched out on a wall of rock or gymnasts balanced above a beam. Giraffes or swans twining their necks. Skyscraper buildings. SpaceX launches. Vertical signs outside old-time movie theaters. Tall models leaning against old brick walls (taken from the side).

Hi Calvin! Honestly, I absolutely dislike the GFX. Not because of the camera itself but because of the stupid hype around it. The sensor is just slightly larger than 35mm and it shouldn't be called medium format. And of course, it is not a film camera. :D

Ok I have to say a couple things.... this came up as a recommended vid and I am so glad it did. 1: THANK YOU for making this vid which displays perfectly on my 34" curved 3440 monitor. The quality is spectacular! 2: THANK YOU for the full size images. I have been eyeing this camera for a while but was unsure how it would look on my ultrawide. 3: You've now made me want one even more. My bank account does not thank you! 4: How are you scanning these? Can you elaborate on the process? This is something that I have never done before. I have a high end brother 3-in-1 printer/scanner/copier. I'm wondering if that would do the job or do I need a specific negative scanner and if so which do you recommend?

Thank you Zachary! Glad you like the video. To scan the negatives I am using an Epson V800 flatbed scanner. I am happy with the results that one is giving me but there are even better (and more pricey) solutions out there.

Great video and really lovely shots. I've lusted after an XPan for some time, but there's one thing that always keeps me from pulling the trigger. This aspect ratio doesn't make sense on smartphones. Considering that that's how many photographers share their work, and media outlets are increasingly focusing on the phone as a primary platform for publishing content, the XPan just doesn't feel versatile enough to me. It would be an intriguing compositional challenge for personal work -- for sure -- but as a photographic tool in the age of the smartphone, I'm not sure it's practical enough for the price it commands.

Nowadays smartphone are 18.5:9 or even wider on the landscape mode, so Xpan still relevant. It's a blessing to see Sir Robin's cinematic photos on 18.5:9 AMOLED display from my OnePlus 6t. First, I think you made a lot of nice images using this camera you never used before. 2nd, yes, I have definitely been thinking about the Hasselblad X-Pan (or the Fujifilm TX1, as it's also known as) for at least the past 2 years. I really like the unique cinematic wide aspect ratio and like you said, cropping an image just doesn't do the same thing. I don't know what it is, but every example I've ever seen of images made with the X-Pan have looked very cool. I am not new to shooting film and have 2 vintage SLR's and a semi-vintage (1985) Olympus point & shoot, but there's something special about the X-Pan. I've wanted a Leica M and considered some medium format cameras as well, but I have to say if I had to put good money into 1 more film camera now, it would be a X-Pan. However, there in lies a slight problem.. the cost.. not to say it's not worth it, but on average, I'm still seeing them go fro at least $2000 and up for a nice copy and set. That's not small change for someone like myself and I shoot film very casually and infrequent.. I still have 2 film cameras I'm slowly shooting when the opportunity is right to use them. So, with such limited time spent with film cameras and also the cost for film, developing and the time to get back a printed product and/or scan for my computer.. IDK?... I'm just not certain that amount of money will be fully utilized as much as I wish I had the time and $$ to do so.. Now, if only they had a digital X-Pan.. l think the closest to achieving such a look would be to use anamorphic lenses, but that in itself could be as much, I think perhaps a lot more. Anyways, thanks for sharing.. I've not totally dismissed the X-Pan for myself, but have to wait and measure when is the right time to get one.
@therealsirrobin7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! :) Yes, it's only worth it if you use it frequently. The only upside is that the camera might get even more expensive so you'll probably won't lose any money if you sell it later. Have seen the Fuji on display in Seoul in a vintage camera shop, it is nice too, but I prefer the dark color of the Hasselblad.

I was quite lucky to get one in 2011 for a very good price, now that I see how much it costs, I'm happy I've bought it back then.
@khronokraze7 жыл бұрын
yeah.. I don't shoot as much film as I'd like and have 2 rolls in 2 film cameras I'm slowly going through.. IDK.. shooting with an X-Pan "may" change things and I might get hyped to shoot more and develop film more often, after all, it does have this very unique perspective and look.. but, as another KZbinr I follow has mentioned in one of his videos in the past.. you really have to want to shoot film and "love it".. it's easy to get lost in the romantic notion of shooting film and then before you know it, you're just not shooting it nearly as much as you think you would.. at least that's how it is for me. anyways, still one of very select few film camera's i'd be more seriously interested in if I were to take up shooting film more often. thanks for sharing this video and your experience with it so far. enjoy!
@khronokraze7 жыл бұрын
they have been holding around the $2000 range with lenses for a while (been interested and looking around on ebay for almost 2 years).. not too bad considering this is basically another form of medium format and I think it has a unique perspective and format that is pretty much unmatched in any other camera (other than the Fuji twin brother TX1).

With used prices so high was it a mistake for Hasselblad to discontinue this line? The X1D will be outsold by the Fuji, Hassie will have to drop the price till it barely covers the cost of that Sony sensor.
@therealsirrobin7 жыл бұрын
No idea. But I guess the cost of keeping the production running would be a lot higher than the profit they could make out of selling the X-Pan. A new one would probably cost a lot more than a good used one now. I don't know if you are aware of the fact that the X-Pan was manufactured by Fuji.

My question is, what is Hasselblad doing about this? One would think that they are aware of the demand for this camera. One would also hope that they have plans to reintroduce the X-pan. A digital version would be nice but would also be ridiculously expensive because of the format of the sensor. I'd be happy to see an updated film version.
@chumleyk Жыл бұрын
They are. That's why they and Fuji have an Xpan function on the digital medium format cameras where, if you use the correct wide-angle lens, you get exactly the same result.

@therealsirrobin7 жыл бұрын
Thank you John. I am not so sure about getting similar results with a fisheye since the 45mm on the X-Pan is more a normal lens and not an ultra wide angle. However, if it works for you then that's fine and keep shooting! :)

First of all: Great shots! Really wonderful work. One can see that it didn't take you long to get accustomed to the camera. Other than that, I'd looove to try this camera out, but since I am mainly shooting with my iPhone and nothing else, it seems kinda silly to shell out this kind of money. ;_( But it really is a wonderful cam. Regarding the aspect ratio; Yes, cropping or stitching are no substitutes. The field of vision is different and I noticed that the viewfinder and composing in 21:9 makes all the difference. Great work, please show us more shots. 😍

The Mamiya 7 is lovely and I thought about getting one + the 35mm adapter, but it's not cheaper than the X-Pan itself. A Leica M6 with a proper lens is also not that cheap. If you buy both it's going to be way more expensive than simply buying the X-Pan. But it is still a very tempting option. :D

what do you mean by "adapt 35mm"? I own a leica m8 with some leica m-lenses, can I adapt these lenses to the mamiya?

Pablo Navarro o.k. I do understand it now

But these are no rangefinders and they are massive compared to the X-Pan.

I love the X-Pan, but I live in Brazil, it's extremely hard to find one to buy and I could buy a car for the price.

That is very unfortunate! But keep looking and maybe you get lucky! :)

i have used pre-owned landscape cameras or film backs before: 6x17, 6x9, 24x68,. price-wise , the xpan was always out of reach. my subject matter varied, horizontal, vertical, or diagonal: landscape, architecture, large group portraiture, car racing, panning, seascapes, wedding, tourist, zoo, sunrise/sunset, any subject matter. auf wiederzehen...

hey man! really great review of the xpan! i've been lusting to get one. i should have grabbed one when it was still around $1,200 but i got the Leica M6 instead. Did not know that it will go as high as it is now. Anyways i saw your Heidelberg photo. Are you around that area? I am also an avid photographer that likes to stroll the streets. when you have time come check out my side of KZbin! Cheers and Happy Shooting!

Hey Aran. A Leica M6 is also a very nice camera, even though it is also a rangefinder it is very different and I might talk about the differences in another video. Yes, I live there. Will check out your channel later!

No I dont want an Xpan. I do crop, digital and film, and here you are wrong, cropping doesnt give a different perspective, that totally depends on the relationship of the lens to the sensor size. In your case, although a 45mm lens is almost standard on a 35mm camera you are not shooting 35mm film, you are shooting a cropped 6x7, its medium format so you are using an extreme wide angle actually. I often crop Xpan format using tele lenses which does give an amazing effect. I am now mostly cropping images panaramic which is why I am now starting to shoot on Fuji 6x9 on 120 which will give me a 9x3cm contact print. You cant beat a huge negative ;-)
@therealsirrobin6 жыл бұрын
The Xpan is still a 35mm camera since it doesn't take 120 film. Honestly, I think it is a waste of film to crop down a 6:7 photo to get the wide aspect ratio of the Xpan and you only get 10 exposures. No, the Xpan shots are not extreme wide angle. Try using a 35mm camera and get the same width of the Xpan with a wide angle and then put a person of center. The distortion will not look that pleasing. 😉
@vicibox6 жыл бұрын
the_real_sir_robin you still don't understand. You are shooting cropped 6x7 even though it's on 35mm film therefore it is an extreme wide angle medium format lens. In other words any medium format camera with a 45mm lens will produce exactly the same image view as an Xpan. You cant just change the laws of physics because you are using 35mm film. I use 120 film because I get a bigger image and that matters with contact printing, 6x9 is the same size as Instax Wide and because I dont use enough film to consider it a waste.
