I learned about the Xpan from Grainydays. My first thought after that was a digital version of it could be the FujiFilm X100 but with two APS-C sensors side by side to emulate the 70mm width of two analog frames. And create a custom lens that covers the two sensors. I know, it’s silly and unpractical. But that’s what I am missing that analog cameras could be. Silly, cool and unique!

If they made that camera I think the whole world would be buying it.

Hey Robin! Your closest digital X-Pan would be the Fuji GFX 50R which has a crop mode matching the X-Pan 65:24 ratio.

Closer in sensor size but the S9 (and S5 etc) also have a dedicated 6.5x2.4 aspect. He's talking about anamorphic desqueeze in stills mode which the GFX doesn't have (video mode only on the 100II) and the S9 only has with the full sensor (in both stills and video). He's asking for the S9 to have the 6.5x2.4 mode not just in stills (which it has) but in anamorphic mode also. The S9 is a nice small camera, if they added a 1.6x desqueeze option and adjustable aspect in anamorphic stills mode it would be perfect. Also anamorphic mode in stills on the GFX would be even better. 🔥

@@dormir01 Nop... it is still a crop or an emulation using the Xpan ratio on a 907 X 50Mo it resize the image and you lose pixels... it is not a full 50 mo pixel. I did the test on photoshop you have the whole image 8272 x 6200 and on Phocus it is a crop image 8272 x 3054 @ the Xpan ratio "just" 26Mo pixel image 🙂

The Hasselblad X1D2 and X2D both have an Xpan crop

Isn’t the rolling shutter of the Lumix S9 too slow for street photography? I mean, in your pictures I didn’t see any, but in tests it didn’t look like you could shoot in fast situations without everything bending :O

Thank you for this, I found it interesting. It seems like a lot of companies could be rolling out f/w to enhance the end user experience. There are not enough actual photographers and videographers working in these companies. We still don't have in camera desqueeze (even for video) for the very popular XH2S after 2-3yrs post release date. However we have had a slew of f/w updates with additional features added. Somehow adding Timecode trumped desqueeze...

Interesting video as always, thx - especially as I was glued to your Xpan posts in the past. Could never afford it unfortunately but use the Sigma SD Quattro H instead when I want a similar effect and experience with the results being pretty good, especially in B&W. It’s a whopping setup mind you but love its quirkiness.

I was talking to someone the other day who had an 7x9 camera, for which he had a 3d printed adapter for 35mm film, which gave him the same format as the x-pan... but that camera was massive. Funny you said all the things about film and b&w in 30 seconds which I have been trying to explain to people for years.

I have the Voigtlander Bessa II 6X9 w/35mm 3D printer film roll adapters. It's smaller and lighter than my GFX50R with any lens attached. It's not "massive", rather more like a compact 6X9 with WAY wider than x-pan images (90mm x 24mm). Super sharp, no lens distortion, and easy to focus.

I’ve just been shooting a 16mm or 28mm lens on my R5 and doing an “x-pan” crop in post. I so badly want an anamorphic photo mode in cameras to be a thing!

Nice workaround but I still would rather shoot in 65:24 and edit in LR. It saves the crop and still have plenty of resolution for sharing online.

i have started adapting my XPan Glass to the Fuji GFX 50R, might be a great backup for the XPan, but never an alternative for me. Film is staying film and digital will never copy the process
