I used to be a diehard Canon user. (For reference my original kit back in the early - mid 2010's was a 5Dmkii, a C100 for video and a F-1 for film). I no longer do for hire freelance work (and haven't for over half a decade) so as nothing more than a hobbyist I decided to make the switch to Leica film cameras for most of my stills. Let me tell you there is a HUGGGGGGGGE difference between Leica and at very least Canon. Even the FD mount film cameras take distinctly Canon style photos (I honestly can't tell the difference between shots I took on my mkii and shots I took on my F-1) So long story short, the "Leica look" is very real and it's very distinctive. But than again I'm just talking raw images straight out of the camera

That conversation rang true some 50 years ago, prior to the digital age. Now as you point it out, it is completely irrelevant (the same goes for discussions on the CCD/CMOS issue). It all comes down to a matter of profiles.
@UKBROOKLYN9 күн бұрын
Surely the "Leica Look" is the halo and chroma that you sometimes get when using vintage Leica lenses. I would argue that the"Leica Look" has not really been evident since the late 70s. Anyone who has used Summitar, Early Summicron or Summaron lenses will know what I am talking about. It's most easily seen on B&W images.

By all means it is illegal to some point. When u point a camera in to strangers face which u can identify the person u don’t have permission to shoot. That person has a right to protect his right to publish that photo and right to completely delete that photo. Invasion of right is somewhat a vague interpretation. If it is flim, that person in the photo has a right to confiscate and damage that entire roll in my country!

Yes it used to be definitely the case with film. Everyone was suing the same types of film so the difference in rendition had to be lenses. The point is moot with digital as every camera manufacturer has definite color profiles but the can easily be modified (and lenses have actually improved to the point, mostly with computer-assisted design and manufacturing, that it is very difficult to see differences between excellent lenses by different manufacturers).

I've been shooting Nikon for years and there is a difference in my Leica Q3 shots. I think it's a combination of micro contrast and color rendering. I am now a Leica shooter and only use my Nikon for telephoto shots. Maybe someday I'll move to an SL4. But for now Q3 and Q3 43 are giving me chills every time I shoot. Thanks.

personally, i don't want my gear to put a "look" on top. I want to capture the scene in front of me as best I can. I realize that Leica buyers think the other way, so ok. each to their own.
@therealsirrobin10 күн бұрын
It's not about putting a look in top. A bad photo will still be a bad photo. For me, user experience is way more important and will reflect in my images.
@BrunoChalifour9 күн бұрын
That is not what "the Leica look" actually means or you are ignoring the fact that every film, lens, sensor+camera processor combination interprets the information it collects in different ways, always different from your own eyes/brain combination for sure. In other words everything through which one looks at light and the world will be interpreted by the very tools that are being used. [what is the "official/real" look of reality anyway? ;o)]

The look is storytelling & capturing the decisive moment with this small camera - thanks Cartier-Bresson
@therealsirrobin10 күн бұрын
Sure, that's the most important part.
@BrunoChalifour9 күн бұрын
The is a difference between form ("look") and content. Storytelling and decisive moment are content; looks are form. There is no doubt that you need a synergy between both but they are separate entities.

The Leica look is the look on your face when you check your bank account balance after buying Leica gear.
@therealsirrobin10 күн бұрын
There is an easy fix for it. Simply don't look at your bank account. Seriously, it might be a steep price initially but the camera hold their value much better than other cameras. When upgrading to a new model it's only half or less even after using the camera for a few years.
@BrunoChalifour9 күн бұрын
The only caveats to this often-heard comment are first that it is too often said by people who have never really experienced a Leica Camera for any length of time, second that a lot of us, Leica users, have bought our first Leica used, as a test (thanks to those, whomever they might be, that bought them new ;o) and that the test happened to be that convincing that we stayed with the brand (for whatever reasons and the list is long, one of them being longevity and craftsmanship... and yes Leica equipment is not perfect but at least carefully designed and until now still with the photographing experience in mind-just look at the menus), thirdly Leica is the only brand still producing range-finder cameras (both film and digital); these cameras do not fit all the needs or comfort zones of many, but they do for some others and as such they are unique... and there might be a price to pay too for what they are, how they were designed and however they are manufactured. Just try one and see with it fits you and your photography or not. In my mind that is the only good argument. In the end cameras and lenses are tools (for those who actually use them on a regular basis) and as such a good tool (one that meets one's needs) makes life easier and one's workflow/photography more efficient.
@nineteen767 күн бұрын
If you buy right, you don't spend money on Leica. They don't lose value and in some cases, they appreciate in value while I'm using them daily. But then subjectively it is partly a life choice. Some people enjoy looking at their bank accounts.

Its probably too late to get the book, but I would love to go to Spain! I'm in Chicago so it's definitely in my bucket list. As for gear I think it does matter. The end result may be the same. But the journey is in my opinion just as important. Enjoying the gear that you shoot with makes all the difference in the world as far as motivating you to go out and shoot. I recently purchased my dream camera, A Leica MP. I just love holding it, let alone shooting with it.

No one should be talking about Film v Digital unless prints from both cameras are compared. Anything else is unacceptable. Film must be hand printed in the darkroom like it was meant to be. Image from digital must be printed to the same size then compared side by side NOT on a computer screen. Only an imbecile does not know that when you scan film you are comparing scanner technology which is out dated by decades. It is fake news to publish a comparison between a scan of a film against a digital image. KZbin has duty to ban fake news

I totally agree that the desqueeze should just be a thing, also for fuji cameras. It's very upsetting that it isn't. I shoot with the GFX 50s as many have commented but I shot it in jpg only (for the same cropping reasons as you). Not yet sure if I'll keep doing that but it did feel more genuine and made me really focus on getting everything right in camera.

Great insights. My experience shooting in Korea is bit different, as a foreigner. People spot me right away, and older people tend to be angry easily. Not easy 😅 The best advice here and I think, and which really help in the practice, comfort and confidence is to learn how to pre-focus to the desired distance. I am mostly shooting manual these days, and, after one of your last video, I decide to re-try the 55mm Zeiss, I was so frustrated as I felt loosing time auto-focusing. Really, zone focusing is amazing. Not easy though, especially on a 50mm.

Very interesting video. I've actually been through a lot of the pain you've described in the video myself too. Since I use my Android phone for photography I've actually created some apps to assist with these problems! "65x24 Film Camera" - this app simulates the XPAN. "Anamorphic Desqueeze" - this app desqueezes images and videos for you, perfect for people who use anamorphic lenses with their phone. I hope these apps help!

With FujiFilm GFX100S, shooting with a wide lens at a ratio of 6.4x2.4 will give you a very similar effect to an expensive/heavy anamorphic lens, and with more than 60mp. I do that often and it's really fun.

Any fuji GFX has this in-camera crop feature. (You'll still have to crop in post though.) Either the 50R or 50SII second hand is the least expensive option. (50SII has image stabilisation and is the newer model of the two.) Stick a GF50mm 'pancake' lens on it (40mm ff equivalent) with a 10% Cinebloom filter for night time light blooms. The lens is f3.5, focuses to 0.5m and has the faster GF linear motor for autofocus. This set up is also WR against rain -- Rainy, Night time, Street in X-Pan? What's not to like ;)

So you got rid of your repaired XPan because it <might> have more problems? Seems kind of radical if you liked it so. Did you send it to Les Victor in Paris? They rebuilt my motor, and seem to be the only place on earth that can do this. It works perfectly now. You should buy another, and keep them in mind for future electronic repairs.
@therealsirrobin24 күн бұрын
They will all fail at some point and after having it fixed and serviced it was the best moment to sell it. I have two friends that own X-Pans and both have issues.
