So the Romans got the Histatii and Principes style of warfare from the Samnites rather than developing it themselves. No surprises there then. Good video. It seems the Romans adapted tactics to aggressively push forward behind the shield rather than just ambush or hold the high ground. Very effective cheap design.

Not really but also definitely yes (roman history am i right?). it was a common method of organization, to have a poorer skirmisher class, then wealthier heavy infantry, but they were the primary force in how they fought before the first set of reforms especially because they fought them often in mountains.

Remember folks, it was the Italians as a whole who conquered the Mediterranean. After the 4th century Latin War, the Romans started learning more heavy on their allies to provide regular manpower, which maintained their increasingly large military and allowed them to spread across the map beyond Italy. The Romans could never have conquered all they did without the Socii, who spent a couple centuries waiting and then fighting for expanded rights.

I find it fascinating that the Samnites came up with a practical solution to tactical flexibility (that the Romans went on to adopt), that the Greeks failed to do. Greece had far less flat land than Italy and yet still fought as a hoplite phalanx. To fight in a relatively or comparatively 'inflexible' formation (which the Greeks of Magna Graecia would have done) seems foolish. I suppose it was usually Greeks vs Greeks so they basically all fought the same and lacked variety until the Macedonians prevailed (which initially under Phillp II and Alexander was a very flexible "combined arms" approach). I also wondered if Alexander made it to Italy, if we would have incorporated the Samnite like formations into his ranks if he beat them and went to take on the Romans...

This is really interessting, so they used a scutum with spears, and most probably not in a shieldwall formation? This would be interessting coz it would mean that spears are still very efective weapons in looser formations
@gm2407 Жыл бұрын
Just having a spear even if it is extra weight secondary weapon is great for skirmishers in the open when caught out by cavalry.

Was this made with AI? Why mention 4 times in a row that the attic helmet allowed the samnites to hear good?

deadass I love watching history videos and i SWEAR TO GOD i keep seeing channels like this with like 100-1000 subs and its all AI generated shit lmao

so i use chat GTP to expand my scripts, other wise they will just come to around 2/5 mins long, all the research is done by me, because these AI programs make hundreds upon hundreds of mistakes. If i told AI to just write me a script about the Samnites it would come up with some garbage that didn't exist, or existed in completely the wrong time frame, and by another country/civilization. It's a useful tool, but it has to be used as a tool, not a cheat, sort of like how icing is done to finish off a cake, or reverb is added to music to make it sound nice.
@gr33ny24 Жыл бұрын
@@AncientHistoryGuy Its completely fine to use it as a tool as long as its not let to do the whole script on itself. nice video though
@MrXandervm Жыл бұрын
@@AncientHistoryGuy you said :"the cheek and noseguards provided aditional protection for the face" thats not true though, the Attic helmet does not have a nose guard. You've mixed it up with a Chalcidian helmet. If the video is to short, then the answer is not talk about boring shit longer (the thrusting spear was designed for thrusting! wow, who would have thought? what, it was made out of wood and some some of metal at the top? how interesting!). Look up interesting stuff! Rome had a bunch of wars with these guys, how did they go? What were the differences between the samnite tribes? Surely, if you are interested in history you can find cool stuff to talk about. Using AI to do so is fine, but this is not something you have to do for school right? no need to pad stuff out needlesly. This and the combination of you talking 20% too slow made the video boring to be honest
@AncientHistoryGuy Жыл бұрын
@@gr33ny24 exactly my thoughts. Its pretty useless as a means of writing the entire script itself. Its also limited to around 900 words, which if you are trying to do longform content is useless.
