In the book 1066: The Year of Conquest by author David Armine Howarth it is claimed that Harold's brother Gyrth had offered to lead the army against William, pointing out that Harold as king should not risk being killed. Advisers suggested that while Gyrth did battle with William "Harold should empty the countryside behind him, block the roads, burn the villages and desttoy the food. So even if Gyrth was beaten Williams army would starve in the wasted country side as winter closed in and would be forced either to move upon London, where the rest of English forces would be waiting, or return to their ships." Harold rejected this advice.

@@TheHalcyonTwilight At about 4 minutes into the video William is burning down the estates of Harold's vassals in Sussex. At a few seconds after 19 minutes into the video, after William has won the battle and no delegation has come to surrender London, it is William who is burning the countryside. Also, the main reason he rejected his advisors plan was he felt he could not send someone else to do his fighting for him. If you are another lord why would you go fight and risk your own life when Harold is not going. He was worried about how it would look to the nobles if he did not fight.
@TheHalcyonTwilight
@TheHalcyonTwilight 3 жыл бұрын
@@fightsports66 I know that William pillaged the countryside: that's pretty standard practice for an invading army. I don't really see how that works in reply to my point that Harold, being the defender, wouldn't want to sour relations with his vassals by burning their estates himself. The vassals turned when it was obvious that William had shattered Harold's forces and killed him, yes. However, he would risk vassals siding with the invaders if he were seen to be inflicting as much damage upon his own lands as the invaders were. He'd have been deposed as a tyrant king, if not at least having to fight with a disunited country.
@fightsports66
@fightsports66 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheHalcyonTwilight The vassals would have known why he was burning the countryside, as they were with him after Stamford Bridge. Many of them would have been the ones asked to take some of their troops and perform the act. Burning a lords estate and burning the countryside are two different things. The country side are the forests where soldiers could go foraging and hunt for food.

Fun Fact: After the battle, many Anglo-Saxon veterans joined the Varangian Guard in the Roman Empire. They repeated the same mistake of falling for feint retreats against the Norman invasion at the battle of Dyrrhachium in 1081. When they realized what happened they took refuge in the church of St. Michael, the patreon Saint of the Normans. Ironically, the Normans set the church on fire and wiped them all out.

Bretons dispute that patronage! Moreover, the Hautevilles descended from a Breton woman named Muriel. I never knew the battle of Hastings was such a close run thing. This brought home to me (I mean, I already knew it, but this threw it in my face, as it were) just how much _winning_ is everything. It doesn't matter that the Normans almost lost the battle at least twice. Only that they won in the end. And thus it was a Norman, Francophone aristocracy that would dominate England for the next few centuries. There is a reason why English today is the most romance-diluted of the Germanic tongues... it's because of the Norman rule, when Normans wrote the laws and the books for everyone else. And on this narrowly-won battle, such a legacy turned.

@@herbthompson8937 way to drink the look aid on Cold War propaganda. Socialism has a rich history in the States, and have been pushing for anarchism (libertarianism) since the 19th century. Josiah Warren is considered the first American anarchist and his work produced American free market anarchism, a subset of libertarian socialism. Maybe pick up an actual history book instead of regurgitating mainstream academia and propaganda. You speak of indoctrination in schools for socialism/communism.... yet I have yet to see a single school actually promote the replacement of wage labor with labor associations and industrial democracy, which is the core of socialism. The greatness of our country is in spite of itself and it’s ruling class. There has always been Americans that had to drag along the rest of us towards the right side of history. Like all other countries we are one among many with similar problems. Our struggle has always been to live up to our own ideal liberal society and republic in spite of the ruling interests and social tyrants it benefits. I have no problem if people think their nation is the greatest, the US certainly has done great things. But for black Americans it’s a different experience in their struggle for civil rights to be recognized. A little perspective man. Keep it patriotic, cause nationalism is anti-American. @Fantassin de Guillaume edwards promise to william is nothing more than a simple propaganda tool against harold as there wasnt any communication or prepartion for williams succesion during the reign of edward. Even williams sources say he chose harold as his succesor in his deathbed also as house of wessex was already exiled at this period and as edward gained kingdom of england with election of witanegomont(or whatever its hard to write it) and not by sword I think we can agree he was accepted as rightful king back then. Harold didnt supported his brother and stayed loyal to his liege until his death his gains of land was either inheritance or appointment by the king (except for one time his brother was exiled and his realm was divided because he abducted an abbess fun story) and this appoitments was simply repaying favor to him as he was the main reason edward was on the throne

@@mijanhoque1740 Yeah, K&G even pointed it out that if Harold had just waited a while longer he could've had a way better army to assemble. Tbh, Harold Godwinson really had a great chance to become King of the English, sad to see he had to die that way, but hey i wouldn't be speaking English if it wasn't for William, and I'm from the Philippines.

It was said that when William as he was invading England trip and fell as he was getting out of the boat. His vassals around him thought it was a bad sign. But someone among the retinue was able to put a positive spin on it by saying "This is the Duke and he has England in his hands" or something to that effect. Which helped to calm their fears. My compliments to all those who made this video a reality. Still waiting for your next video on the Imjin War.

Honestly, Hastings was one of those rare battles that was so close, it came down to which king was killed first. Could’ve just as easily been William felled by a stray arrow. And if so, his army would’ve melted away just as the anglo saxons did. Also, to me, Hastings wasn’t William’s greatest feat. It was maintaining control of both his kingdom and his duchy in the aftermath that’s far more impressive.

I mean, they were both opportunistic usurpers, and a certain Canute had already weakened the native Wessex monarchy to the point the "normal" method of royal succession (the Witenagemot) was only rarely invoked. By this point England was the prize of the North Sea, and the fact that two challengers vied with Harold within months of his assumption of the throne tells you /somebody/ was going to take that damn island. Of course, Canute, Harald Hardrada, and William only wanted England b/c it had an advanced bureaucratic administration. Of all the realms in Latin Christendom come 1066, England was the easiest to collect taxes from, so these foreign kings wanted it as a bank account to fund their other endeavors. Consequently, I'm always skeptical of ppl. trying to rehabilitate King John or Richard III on the basis they enacted administrative reform. Please! Administrative reform in England circa the High Middle Ages is easy!
