One of the reasons Harrold was crowned so quickly was because the Witten had been assembled for a religious holiday. And then Edward's health rapidly failed. So the Witten decided to stick around. A Saxon king could only be crowned during the closest religious holiday. Which is also why Harrold's successor was not officially crowned king before Willian took London. The coronation was to take place during Christmas.

Tostig was the Earl of Northumbria, but he neglected his earldom and his subjects were ticked off at his rule and so revolted. King Edward wanted his friend back in power and was willing to go to war, but wiser heads prevailed and civil war was averted.

If you want a really good story about this war, then I would recommend G.A. Henty's book, "Wulf the Saxon." It is a great book, and the History is remarkably accurate, (as are all of Henty's books), considering that it was written in the late 1800's.

Piece of this I loved that a history (ex archaeologist) teach told me is that when William landed in England he tripped which was seen as an omen by the soldiers that he would fall but William instead stood up with 2 hands of sand and said "God has given me the land already"

And even though the Normans brought their French words for everything over from the mainland, the Anglo-Saxon word Earl was retained. Why? Well, the French equivalent of Count wasn't pronounced very nicely locally. Yeah. But the Earl's wife got to be called a Countess, so that's ok.

While I don't know 100% for-sure, I think the *other* reason is that the status of Earl was not entirely known at the time, in terms of 'exchange value.' An English Earl ranked only below the English King in status (& was equal to other Earls). Given that *Dukes* ranked in status just below a King on the continent, *one could argue* that the title of Earl was actually more comparable to a Duke than a Count. (side note: I'm not sure I *entirely* agree w/ this, as 11th Century continental Dukes were basically sovereign entities but w/out the 'sacred' role of Kingship, such as anointment w/ oils. English Earls were hardly *sovereign* but they *were* very powerful). The argument is supported (rather shakily) by the fact that in other North Sea Scandinavian Kingdoms (such as Sweden & Norway) the title of 'Jarl' (roughly equivalent to an Earl, at least etymologically) is translated as 'Duke' at some point; both Birger Jarl of Sweden & Skule Bardsson of Norway were Jarls who promoted themselves as Dukes, skipping the comital ranking altogether. With Earls in a possibly *ambiguous* status position, the idea is that King William, cognizant of power held by a Duke (being one himself) decided that Earls were equivalent to Counts only, not Dukes. As such, he & his family would remain the only Dukes in England. Again, I'm not sure I buy this justification, but I've heard it given in conjunction w/ your explanation & I'd thought I'd mention it.

Well there is 150 years between Rollo and William. The Norses that settled mixed with the (more numerous) locals so much that William himself didn't actually have much Norse blood, mostly Frankish. And regarding culture... well, the Normans assimilated so much that they didn't have a lot in common with the Norsemen anymore at this point. Rollo was a viking (viking is a job), but the later dukes of Normandy can more be seen as a mix Norse-French, gradually more french than norse with each generation.

That's why Battle is called Battle. It got the name from the battle, so it couldn't really have been called the Battle of Battle. Now if another one took place there, that would be an epic name.

2:27 In 911 surely, but in 1066, it was already more difficult to differentiate the Normans from the Franks, since they were already more or less assimilated with them. Whether in terms of language, mixed marriages (therefore a mixture of DNA), Trade, dress style and facial look, the Art of War (EX: Chivalry, where the Vikings fought on foot ), and most importantly Religion, etc ...

Surprisingly I found out that I was related to William the Conquer. It's not too impressive considering he had 5 million decendents but it is still something. It took forever because is son Henry had like 20 children... it was exhausting figuring this out.

Yep. Tostig, Harrold's brother had been kicked out of his earldom, Northumbria, because he was doing a crappy job at it and the Northumbrians hated him. King Edward wanted to go to war with the Northumbrians to place his friend Tostig back in his earldom but wiser councils prevailed. So Tostig was coming back for revenge. And to get his earldom back.

What's not pointed out here was that since Normandy was founded by Vikings, there were different rules of succession for bastards. Men could marry women not through a religious ceremony but through a Scandinavian-legacy custom called "more danico" (in the Danish manner), which made the women "frilla", and their children were seen as legitimate by the Normans. Rollo, the first duke of Normandy, "married" Poppa, the daughter of Count Bérenger of Bayeux, in this manner. Since Robert I the Magnificent (William's father) couldn't marry a commoner like Herleva (William's mother), he took her as his frilla, and their son William was seen as legitimate by the Normans. What caused problems was that Robert had come to the throne after the suspiciously early death of his brother Richard III in 1027 (one year after he inherited the duchy), and after Robert died on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1035, the Norman barons were keen to put the Richardids, that branch of the family, back on the ducal throne in order to limit the powers of the duke. It's only later on, with 13th-century chronicler Orderic Vital, that William's bastardness is put forward and designated as the cause of the instability that plagued Normandy during William's minority.
