The more you rub the hat, the harder it gets. Plan for it to shrink as you rub. Also to remove fuzz: wait for the hat to dry completely then take a lit match or lighter and let it travel over the surface of the wool. The fuzz will shrivel up and can be brushed away. Wool is not flammable.

yes...and if you want a bigger brim you will need to be sure that you lay out the brim part carefully. I would add one more thin layer a the bottom to give the brim some substance. This takes a lot of rubbing to get the fibers close together and stiff. It's totally possible.

How do you know how big to make resist for shrinking?

The test patch I have shown in previous videos helps with this. Watch for shrinkage on that. Usually, I expect it to shrink by about 1/3, but each fiber is different. You do have some control over this as you full and shape the item you are felting.

Hello, Thank you for your video! I'd love to make my own beaver felt hat, but am not sure where to source the materials? Would you be able to give some suggestions? I'd like to find a place to buy the fur felt as well as hat blocks, tools, etc. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

Check with trappers for beaver fur...as for hat blocks. I go to antique stores and i like to use bean pots. They seem to give a good approximate shape, and I can more specifically shape using a washboard, my head and my hands.

about 12" by 10" more or less it depends on how much you want for a brim and how much you want to shape it after you have formed it.

This is beautiful and SOOOOOOOO interesting, but why is the water so dirty? If I was wearing this hat and got caught in the rain would dirty water start dripping? Sorry if my comment sounds rude. I don't mean to. I'm just new here and wondering 🥰🥰

My guess is that she didn't wash the wool before starting to make the hat, since the creation process involves agitating with soap and water, it gets washed as you make it. Once it's done it'll be thoroughly washed, rinsed, and clean.

No offense taken. The dirt does not stay in the hat. The water is dirty because I use dirty wool. My wool felts so fast that it cannot be washed without it felting. As an aside, the Navajo people who are the originators of the Navajo Churro breed, do not wash their wool before spinning for this reason...they wash and dye it after spinning. A lot of debris is removed during the picking and carding process, but the finer dirt is removed in the felting process...by the time I finish I project, I have rinsed all of the dirt out (see part 2 of hat making). The last step I do it is to run the hat under cold water until the water is clear. Then I do the final shaping. This is last step can be done over and over again if you get your hat dirty...just be careful to use cold water and to shape (not shrink it by rubbing or twisting) the hat when you let it dry.

Hello! The Sapphire blue soap you use, are you able to say the brand? If its a well known brand, I know it, but I've always been told to use olive oil soap!

It's Dawn, but you can use any biodegradable soap.

My resist is about 16" by 12". This may vary a bit depending on how much your wool shrinks and how stiff you want your hat to be, but that gives you an idea of the size I use.

About 18 inches along the bottom, depending on how big you want your brim and a foot down from the top. Being exact is not necessary, as in the process of felting you are shrinking it to the shape and size you want.
