Way back at the dawn of my time, my mom made hats. All kinds of hats. But her specialty was Easter bonnets. Every year for many many years she won the coveted Oakridge Easter Hat contest. I watched but never learned how. Mom is 96 now and I am going to make this one for her so we can visit the rose gardens together and not worry about sunburns....and look very fashionable at the same time. I had almost forgotten those days. Thank you so very much

Be patient with yourself and accept that you might have to make more than one to get the results that you will love!! Years ago, when drafting this pattern, I probably made dozens of design samples before I got all the little flaws figured out and removed!! Still do that to this day ... even for something like a placemat. This is one of the more challenging hats in the collection so take your time and make at least two!! Cheers, Tori

This is my dream sun hat! So beautiful! It’s hard to find nice hats and this is like a dream come true to have you teaching us so selflessly. I’ve had a hard time finding hat patterns to sew and now I have so many from you that I really don’t know where to start. 😊. Thanks so much again for sharing all these.

Thank you Dawn for this lovely comment. Made my day! Glad to share especially since I have removed myself from the competitive world of selling hats! Would rather retire knowing that the patterns will be useful and live on! I still have so many to share. We are working on kids hats for a video, variations of this pattern, bucket hats, printing on canvas for hat bands or bags ... so much to do this spring! Thanks again for watching and for taking the time to leave such a lovely comment, Tori.

This is such a wonderful design and thanks so much for really good instructions. I learned a lot about how to make a quality hat. My only wish is that where the lining top joins the side was a hidden seam.

This one has many possibilities. Just finishing up part two so it will be up at the end of the week. This brim flatters most people, even the people that say they can't wear hats. We have made and sold 1000s of them and I am just finishing my last few orders before I retire from production sewing these beauties and move to teach you lovelies how to make them instead!

I have a different brim I use for fleece but I have made this with fleece ... use a fabric for the edge like black cotton canvas. The winter version I use a milliinery wire and velvet on the edge. That video and pattern will be coming to the channel this fall. This hat for Alaska would be nice in Cord too. Use a fine whale for the edge and wider wale for the body. Have fun!! Tori

Help! I need some tips about alternating the pattern to increase the width of the brim, but not end up with a floppy brim. I MUST shield my face from the sun. I have now sort of ruined 3 similar hats. (Not your pattern but I want to use your pattern for my next hat.) I alter hat patterns to make the brim 5 or 6 inches wide. (I gently trim the back piece from the center seam to the side seam to make the center back a bit narrower, so it doesn’t touch the back of my neck. To avoid having floppy brims, I alter the pattern by making 6-8 cuts in the brim pattern piece, and I overlap each cut to make several skinny triangles, thus reducing the outside circumference of the brim. The problem is that it’s all guesswork as to how much to reduce the circumference. I want to have a gentle downward slope of the brim. (This is versus having a floppy brim because it’s so wide now that I increased the brim width. Are there any tips or guidelines I can use when decreasing the outside circumference of the brim? Thank you.

@@Torontogal777 there is a big brim coming later next week. We are just finishing the kid's wide brim for release Monday and then adults will be a few days after. This is meant to be a mid size brim that looks good on any head shape or head size.

@@Torontogal777 You are going to need more help than I can give on a comment on KZbin! I have another sun hat coming up but not sure it it is what you are looking for. Sounds like you need to search for a pattern for a hat shape that is more in keeping with what you have in mind. You can also experiment with designing your own. My hats are designed to offer sun protection and also offer comfort so you can see where you are walking or garden, drive, move your head up and down for golf. etc. It is a delicate balance to do all of the above. If you brim slopes too far down you are going to have to turn it up somewhere in order to move around safely or to do anything more than sit on a beach or a lounge chair. Maybe visit a hat store and get some good in person advice. If you are in Toronto you can try Lilliput Hats downtown or in Niagara, Beau Chapeau is great too. Keep in mind the larger the brim the more apt it is to be blown off your head in the wind. If that is what you are after, try some hats on in person, choose one that fits your needs and if it has a extra large brim, you could sew on some ribbon or a scarf for tying under the chin on windy days which is pretty much every day this year. I will be offering in person hat lessons early this fall so you can follow our Facebook or Instagram page (madcaphats) if that would interest you at all. Good luck!! Tori

Thank you very much for your reply. I am in Toronto and will look up those shops. The hat I want to create; I don’t want it to look like a beach hat, so I would choose a fabric that would look alright with street clothes. I get your point about visibility while walking. I do plan to add a loop on each side of the hat where I can thread through a ribbon or cord to be able to tie it under my chin. The challenge, which I think you do understand clearly is getting that downward slope of the brim just right. I will look for your classes… and the new hat pattern you mentioned is your previous comment. Thank you very much.

One of the pieces is either too long or not long enough. Which piece is too long? The band or the brim? You can sometimes ease the pieces together better by changing which side of the two pieces is on top when you are sewing the band to the brim. You can try sewing them together with the inside brim on top and band underneath. Check your cutting. Did you print the pattern pieces at different times? Is it possible that one of the pattern pieces was printed with the Fit to page setting on? That will make your pattern pieces too small. You can send me pictures to my email madcaphats@gmail.com. That would help me better help you if I can see your work. Tori

Hi Tori, Fantast hats! I just bought this pattern. Can you tell me what fabric is best to make the Sunblock hats? In general really what fabric is used? I have a ton of cotton and when I mean a ton - it’s probably 75 bolts each. I am hoping that I can use these ;) I'm in Ontario too, close to the Airport.

Nice to meet you Michelle!! I use denim and or 7-9 oz fine woven canvas or cotton linen for my brims and pretty much anything under 9 oz for the tops. I use poly cotton broadcloth for my lining. Quilting fabric is nice for the tops as long as you sew a piece or heavy weight stabilizer to the back like in the video. If it is quiltiing fabric I usually use a medium weight one side fusible too for the bands. Hope that helps! I will be offering b and b and one on one hat courses here at our lakeside studio near Kingston starting this fall. If you are interested in seeing this process in person and making a hat or two under my supervision with my fabrics, email me at madcaphats@gmail.com to keep in the loop! Good luck with the sewing and let me know if you have any other questions. Here to help! Tori
