To echo all the other great comments here, this how-to video is the best one I have ever seen. The editing is first-class. It took me a total of 7 hours to complete the job having to acquire a rivet gut and several spline bits mid-way through but that will have undoubtedly saved me hundreds of pounds if I had taken the car to a garage. After re-assembling, I had an issue where the driver's door wasn't opening after being locked. You can imagine my relief when I found a further tutorial by HatBoyHarvey to resolve that as well! Window now operating fine. Thank you so so much!

I totally agree with Dariusz. My Skoda Fabia Excellence 2002 is getting a bit long in the tooth now. Things like this window regulator are, unsurprisingly, starting to play up. On such occasions it is tempting to give up on the car, as this kind of thing would be very expensive to have done at a garage and I have until now had zero confidence with mechanical repairs. I think if I ditched the car now it would get scarpped, but this would be a shame as the vehicle still runs really well and is a pleasure to drive. I think HatboyHarvey is doing a great thing for the environment because he shows us how to extend the life of our cars through a little time and effort. On this occasion, it was my passenger door window regulator, but it was simple to extrapolate from his really good driver's door video, especially with the clear audio commentary which is really helpful including little humourous tips like storing the window glass in Uncle Bob's shed. I was however relieved to find that I didn't need to dismantle the door lock because I was able to pull the wiring loom all the way through from the door hinge end and thus completely remove the panel from the car. I would add that I made the mistake of not remounting motor onto the panel before installing it back in the door...Consequently the central pulley popped out and I had to restart the job and rewind the tension in the wire which was a struggle. I won't make that mistake again! Many thanks for this excellent video!

Thanks for the comment, it's great to hear how guys get on with such projects and get positive results in the end. I've really started to think that extending the life of older cars is the way to go now that we are starting think about the environment more, so I'm all for that. uncle Bob's been saying it for years as he actually lives in that shed and takes baths in old buckets :-)

@@HatBoyHarvey Totally agree re old cars. My wife's '95 Polo is fine & won't be parted with as she's from Wath & there's no arguing with that. Am looking at kits to convert old cars to EV instead of scrapping. They seem ahead with this across the water eg transition-one.fr/ but they don't do right-hand drives😕

5:48 I haven´t bothered removing the glass. Instead, I just prepared some tape, lifted the glass all the way up, and stuck it to the door frame with a few pieces (I always used like 6 or 7 strips, just to be sure). You make great, comprehensive and very detailed guides.

Thank you so much man! Just replaced my regulator panel. I couldn't find an M8 socket, and 4 of the shops i visited didn't have them. Ended up leaving the entire doorlock assembly in place, and working around it. Was tricky with removing the panel and installing the new one but worked. Also couldn't find the 6,4x10 rivets that come from factory, but I had 5x12 rivets. Those pulled straight through, so I taped washers to the back of the holes inside the door, and then fastened the rivets through the panel, door and then washers. That gave them enough hold! Ended up spending €55 on a panel, and €25 on rivet gun + rivets, and the shop would have charged me €280! Granted, it did cost me like 10 hours including all the research but thats still a good pay for my age. Thanks a lot man! You give me the confidence to work on Margreet as she's called and build up my mechanic skills
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 2 жыл бұрын
That is great to hear. Glad you saved money and my video helped give you the confidence to do the work as it isn't for the faint hearted! Just one thing with the rivets; you could have installed threaded rivets or rivnuts which I would have done if mine was riveted. They are easy to install without needing a special rivet gun as they can be installed with just spanners, maybe something to consider if you need to do the other side :-)

Thanks to this video i was able to repair my own window. Thank you! Its not the first time this channel and its content had helped me tackle a problem. I am an apprentice and i highly appreciate the in depth information in order to not only fix the problem but to also understand it. Given i own a haynes manual. In this particular job the haynes manual is a lot harder to understand than the explaination in this video. As you explain how you are going to achieve what you are about to do. Where the haynes manual assumes you know how.

Thanks, I am just trying to give others the benefit of my knowledge on material product design. To understand how something works it is often the simplest things that make it work and not work without them. Many mechanics often overlook what they take for granted as easy when for someone else that has never come across the same thing, finds hard.

@@HatBoyHarvey i had the unfortunate luck that mine broke half way down and it was utterly stuck. and the plastic bracket to which the lock is attached was broken. (so the connection of its relevance to the lock wasn't quite clear to me at first) I also struggled a lot with removing the lock cylinder and the door handle cable as i didn't quite understand how the setting screws worked, except for 'do not remove fully' the trick by pulling on the door handle to 'feel it change' helped me out there.

Thankyou for this video, I was looking to get my drivers door window fixed as cables chewed up but watching this made it look do-able . I am very mechanically minded doing all jobs on my car which is a 1.2 fabia classic and I found this job very much do-able and fixed it today as well as cleaning lock and barrel whilst they were out it's now working fine, the only issue I have is the inner window seal which had a type of felt on it where Glass rides against it but this felt has all but peeled away so I will either find a new inner seal or stick a piece of new felt back on existing seal. Had all tools required so just cost £35 for new regulator panel and a few hours of my time . Thanks for video, very helpful, the only thing I would say to anyone just back out small barrel screw or use a strong magnetic screwdriver as mine fell inside but was eventually easily recovered with a strong magnet on the end of a hacksaw blade 👍

Thanks again for the videos!!! Another thing I fixed thanks to them. I fixed the window mechanism. The metal cable broke, I bought the whole used mechanism, with speaker, metal cable, motor (totaling $40). I left only the electric cables and moved them to the new mechanism. When the cable is worn out, you can hear crackling and the motor howling, because it has difficulties, and sometimes the window does not close and returns. Thanks and greetings from Poland!!! I also have such a car :D May the diesel power be with you !!!

Extremely useful, thanks. A great filming and editing achievement. Mine was riveted, and I used Rivnuts when replacing. The door catch nearly defeated me as it is held in by two threadlocked Torx screws, not bolts. Refitting the wires and bellows to the A post also very fiddly.

Again - thank you - have been there a year ago. A time-consuming struggle but it was a succes at the end, and I saved a lot of money because Skoda spareparts are relative cheap and easy to get. If I had followed your method in detail, it would have been easier to change the broken plastic slide that connects the cables.

Thanks, Yes, parts are relatively cheap for these. Maybe I should have shown that slider in more detail, but I don't think it is a repair to recommend. It was only ever meant to be a temporary fix, but has actually lasted over 15 years. Still would only recommend fitting new or good salvaged parts :-)

Excellent video. But, wow, what an absolute mission to undo the regulator. Whereas on the MK1 Octavia, It's simply the door car being removed, 6 bolts holding the regulator, 2 bolts for the window clamps, and you slide out the whole mechanism. I think this Fabia setup similar for the MK1 Superb. I know the MK4 Golfs have this setup.

Thanks for the video! I have followed it too many times, now I don"t have to open it in KZbin. :D If I may, I would add an additional step to make the glass positioning during the assembly easier: You hold your right little finger on that black plastic part at 05:03. If we remove it, then the glass pane have greater clearance, it is easier to find the way into the glass fixing thing(cradle?) during the assembly. And it is possible to bend this thing into "broken" state while we slip the pane down(yes, I have done it). We only have to pull it upwards to remove, and knock down to install.

I used double sided tape. previous first attempt was with lock bolted and carrier afterwards. Super fiddly but somehow fixed managed years ago. The mechanism of the pushbuttons is like this: soft push first contact (manual controlled), hard push second contact (automatic opening closing). If you put a little piece of tape between the contact and the part that will touch it, the electric contact will be cut and the window passes to only manual controlled.

Clean the channel out first and maybe lub it with silicone spray. It does sound like the glass isn't fixed in place at the rear so you may want to take the door card off and check the clamps. Make sure the clamps are clean and dry, oil free etc. Be careful with these when tightening, mindful of the torque specs, but enough to grip the glass, which maybe higher ;-)

I'm not sure what you mean about a 'rubber lip' on the door lock mechanism. maybe upload a little vid on your KZbin page as I am not sure about what this is. If you mean the rubber/plastic mount on the lock barrel against the door body then this needs to be in place as it fits under 2 lips on the backing plate and cushions the lock barrel against the paint. If yours is gnarled up then take one of the rear doors :-)

My power windows behave very strangely: it works fine during the summer but when autumn comes they stop working. I believe it has something to do with humidity or even water getting inside the controller, because sometimes when it doesn’t work if I tackle with the fuse(take one out and insert it again) sometimes I can make it work. Did you see or hear about this kind of issue?
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, it happens with moisture entering the door cavities, so it is important to make sure as much as possible the window seal at the top edge is nice, clean and flexible. The door drain is free from crud and the inner panel seal is good. These doors start to leak over time and it is hard to find a definitive reason for it other than the top seal becoming hard or leaking in the small cap at the side from shrinkage. Replacements are very difficult to find other than dealers. If they will sell you these parts is another story!

Thanks. Window regulator cables have come loose/broken etc and are wrapped around the motor gear in the centre of the panel. Yes you need to move the glass up to undo the clamps. You can detach the motor and wind it by hand/screwdriver/tool to get the window up enough to take it out. sometimes just pulling on the glass can dislodge/move it. High great video thanks. My window dropped last night so my guess is I have to replace the window regulator so my question is… what bolts did you get to fix the panel in place as you mention most have rivets but yours were bolts. Or is it a case of if it’s riveted then you have to use rivets to replace it
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 2 жыл бұрын
If you have rivets they have to be drilled out and then new rivets put back, but you can use steel rivnuts which are a kind of rivet with a thread. once you install these you can use bolts. The torque on all the bolts should be tightened up the same when re-assembling the panel as they act critically in a side impact. I will buy some rivnuts and do a video on these as they can easily convert the panel and you don't need any special tools.

The strange thing is that the window now and then suddenly works when the sun has been on it. But this isn't always the case either. Is it wise to replace the motor module or is it another problem? I would also examine the wires for fraying. Have a play with the connector and switch whilst activating the switch to see if it is a connection issue. You could also test for power at the motor end connected and the resistance of the wires end to end to locate either low power or high resistance respectively. Good battery and ground.

Sorry to hear you have problems with P0341. I would take it back to dealership as they changed the sensor and checked the wiring. It is easy for them to say they checked the wiring, but these faults are not easy to find and can take time to fix and mechanics don't like wiring problems which is the most likely cause (sensor/connections/wiring/ECU) other than the sensor fitting incorrectly/reluctor/cam belt all needs tb OK.
