Black Copper Marans and their eggs are beautiful! However, people have a lot of trouble hatching them. I show you how I hatch mine, using the dry hatch method. Got a dozen eggs I picked up in the incubator now. They can produce black, blue or splash. Love to have blues and splash to go with my blacks. All three patterns are beautiful in the copper marans. So many birds, never enough coops.... lol

11 days out. I'll be candling them this evening. Hopeful but I've not had a lot of luck with eggs delivered in the post.

I've got a couple of blacks in the brooder that just hatched when I started these. Like to give them some buddies. Last chance for this year. I'll be starting a new building to raise black flies in real soon. My birds are going to be missing their daily ration of bugs. Cool nights has put the brakes on them.

Why is there blood on them did you help them come out of the egg?

Did you sand the eggs at the beginning of incubation or at lockdown? Thank you for this video!

I sanded them during the candling, this way the shell isn’t compromised for long, and it allows for the shell to further weaken in that small area.

Did you assist these hatching in any way? If so, did you remove any of the egg shells prior to them pushing out? We’re trying to improve our Marans hatch rate.

I’m sorry I overlooked your comment. Keep in mind this information is coming from a nurse who worked in labor and delivery. That said-if they are unsuccessfully working to get out I will assist by removing a few pieces for a breathing hole. Also if the membrane seems dried or overly tough and they just aren’t progressing, taking care not to rip through a blood vessel (you can see them quite well) I will gently begin rolling the membrane back beginning at the established airhole. This is never rushed as you’ll lose them altogether. I have many 100% hatches with this method, and I have found the ones that don’t make it, really were infirm in some way. I’m a firm believer in not helping chickens from eggs, but I think because our climate is not like the Marans origin, we may have created a box even Houdini couldn’t get out of. Also, NEVER remove the shell that is attached to their umbilical cord! Good luck, I’m so excited for you!

I would love some info if you will..this is my 1st time with hatching Black Copper Marans..I already have 1 Roo and 1 hen from where I've gotta their eggs

I've followed all the instructions on putting them in the incubator I've read that the humidity but I can't get it below 50% bit I read it's suppose to be 30%

First- a dry hatch involves not putting water in the humidifier trough. This way the eggs are set to your environment. I’m pretty sure your house is not normally 50% humidity. If I’m wrong please explain.

You only file your eggs if the chicks have a hard time getting out. It’s based on how “tough” or “hard” your shells are. If you don’t know I would go by how difficult it is to see through the shell at day 10 candling. The filing is NOT deep, and only serves as a weak area on the egg. Also take note of where the mark is. It is not at the pointed end of the egg. The air cell is found at the large end so you want the weakened area to be at the end with the beak (aka air cell end) Does this help?
