Hi Mr Danzig Corridor - Britain is an island my friend. God himself flooded the land bridge to Europe. We even built the biggest Empire the World has even seen simply to avoid your clutches. No man is an island, Entire of itself, Every man is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As well as if a manor of thy friend's Or of thine own were: Any man's death diminishes me, Because I am involved in mankind, And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee. _John Donne 1624._

I’ve always compared it to Portia’s dealing with Shylock’s demand for a pound of flesh, even though Antonio has the money. This is what Brexit felt like to me, an attempt at cutting out a pound of flesh with no consideration for everything that would be lost as a result. “Therefore prepare thee to cut off the flesh in The Merchant of Venice. Shed thou no blood, nor cut thou less nor more But just a pound of flesh: if thou cut'st more Or less than a just pound, be it but so much 2275 As makes it light or heavy in the substance, Or the division of the twentieth part Of one poor scruple, nay, if the scale do turn But in the estimation of a hair, Thou diest and all thy goods are confiscate”. SOMONE COMMENTED UNDER THIS VIDEO: “We are an island nation and there is nothing wrong with that. It is an intragal [SIC] part of our history and our place in history. Being separated by the 22 miles of the English Channel has saved Europe from Napoleon and 2 World Wars. never be afraid of who we are and how we became who we are and our place in history.” MY REPLY: We invaded or overrun 90% of the world's countries at one stage or another to create the biggest Empire. No, I won't forget our place in history or geography. By the late 1950s it was obvious that our Empire was finished and our Commonwealth severely diminished. From 1961 onwards, successive Tory and Labour governments applied to join the fledgling European Community for the economic survival of our country. Other countries in Europe were doing better than us and we were nicknamed "the sick man of Europe"; our inflation and unemployment rates were sky high. In the EU, our economy has done relatively well. We hugely benefited from frictionless trade with most of the rest of Europe, that has helped our exports and imports, of which the EU is and always will be our biggest market in the world by far. Outside the EU, and without our Empire, Britain is alone in the world for the first time in over 300 years. We're a small country in a corner of the North Sea, surrounded by giants which we simply cannot compete against alone - the EU, the USA, China. Today, every European country is in the EU's Single Market or wants to be apart from Britain and Belarus. That's no place for us. We need to be back in the EU.

What really irks me is that any time the topic is brought up, people 1. feel the need to express their very strong opinion; 2. feel the need to either act thoroughly overjoyed or utterly enraged at the result of the referendum; and 3. demand that _I_ take a side, either their side or the opposite side, preferably theirs, but I MUST TAKE A SIDE in this pointless bickering and engage in some stupid discussion about how r3tarded the brexit camp is/was, or how emotional the "remoaners" are, or how tyrannical Brussels is (as if Westminster ISN'T?!!!)... Get it through your thick skulls! I DON'T CARE. I don't care which way you voted, I don't care what _genius_ argument you have for or against, that somehow wasn't part of the pre-vote debate (for... reasons?), and I don't care to waste my time coming up with (and defending) a position for a vote that happened nearly 10 years ago, that nobody asked me to participate in in the first place.
