I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS 😩 I was just hooking up with the magnetic timeline earlier today! I hope this doesn't create a gap in our friendship, Matthew. Amazing amazing tutorial, brotha! Fantastic point that audio lanes in Final Cut wouldn't be possible without the magnetic timeline. I've never thought about that. Also, apparently I've been wrong this whole time. I also thought it was the tilde key lol. Side note, the fact that you don't have at least 100,000 subs at the moment is mind boggling to me.

You've done a great video. Unfortunately you've proven how the magnetic function needs to have a Full OFF function and allow people to just edit as tracks. Especially for people like me who have to keep lots of things in tight sync. Secondary story lines also stink. Don't need them. Just give a Final Cut 7 override option so the edit just does exactly what I want it to do. Don't need the extra help with magnetics and secondary story lines. Sorry I just find this such a pain and wish I could get a FULL MANUAL function. Would be an awesome button. Just my two cents. Oh and Grav is a help but just would rather have a full manual. Everything you've mentioned is dealing with defeating the magnetic function. Ugghhhh.
@matthewTobrien11 ай бұрын
I couldn’t - respectfully - disagree more. Embracing all of these tools - for me - has made even the thought of editing with tracks excruciating. Secondary Storylines are incredibly useful, and I personally have zero issues keeping scores and sound effects in sync even if on occasion I have to manage their connections. Why not just use the Position Tool at all times? And why not just use Resolve? Sounds like the track-based paradigm may work better for you.

@matthewTobrien Жыл бұрын
It is…until it isn’t. I know your pain - I lived it. But I kept trying to work WITH the Magnetic Timeline instead of against it, and once it “clicked” it was awesome. You can’t remove a clip connection. You can only move it or override it temporarily. Hang in there, keep learning, keep watching vids like this one - you WILL figure it out! But don’t try to edit like it’s Premiere or Resolve.

I think that's a fair criticism, Wang. With subs who have been with the channel for a long time, some of this might feel like a repeat. But I wanted to make the video for a few reasons: 1. I have a lot of new subs who haven't gone back to my first Magnetic Timeline video that I made, what, two years ago? 2. I gotta keep the Evergreen content that has wide appeal regular on the channel because these are the videos that get the most views over time and, therefore, fund the channel through ad revenue. 3. I was getting tired of sharing my old Magnetic Timeline video on Reddit and in FCP Facebook Groups because it, frankly, isn't very well made. And I got something wrong in that video and that was really bothering me. Thanks for the honest feedback, though!

This is packed with really great tips - thank you so much! One theme I'm noticing with tips and tutorials I'm seeing though is a pattern: It feels like everything is kind of oriented around ways to get it to *not* do things that the magnetic timeline wants to do. In other words, hacks to get it to behave more like other NLEs. There a sort of irony here, or is this imagined? I'm still committed to getting comfortable with FCP, but struggling to see the core benefit of it yet.
@matthewTobrien Жыл бұрын
To me it’s not that it’s a hack it’s that it’s a tool that is adaptable to the nuanced and varied demands of editing. Sometimes you want to slide an edit and move an attached clip with it and sometimes you don’t - you can do either. For me, the magic of it is that you can do simple edits with fewer operations. It’s faster and less destructive and big, late-stage revisions are no longer a nightmare.

Newbie question lol. Is there a feature somewhere within Final Cut Pro that will allow me to set my timeline size the default way that I like it every time so I don’t have to increase it at the start for every project? Great video on the magnetic timeline by the way! The funny thing is Vegas Pro works very similarly with the only difference being that it’s still a different track for each video or audio piece, but other than that it works exactly like the magnetic timeline with the automatic ripple deleting, between cuts so this is the one part of editing that wasn’t confusing to me at all with my switch hahaha!

These tips are great as usual, Thanks you. Shift Delete is awesome. Quick questions, is there and way to override connections like your last tip but when you move the clip out of the way it replaces it with a grey empty space where the clip was instead of snapping everything where that clip was? Thanks!
@matthewTobrien2 жыл бұрын
I'd say the Position tool is probably your best best for that (if I'm understanding your questions correctly). The big issue with the Position tool is you have to be careful you're not overwriting other clips as you move the clip you want to move.
@matthewTobrien2 жыл бұрын
Just remembered: you can switch to the Position tool and then use the Grave key modifier to Override Connections and move the selected clips up and out of the Primary Storyline to leave a Gap Clip *AND* the connected clips behind in its place. Give that a try! Just make sure you don't drag the clip over any neighboring clips because with the Position tool enabled it'll overwrite surrounding clips.
@NazarovEgor2 жыл бұрын
OMG. It’s MUCH easier just DO NOT use magnetic timeline 😂 especially when you watch part 07:30 just put an empty box over primary line and move what ever you want attaching it to a box. I use magnetic timeline for other purposes.
@matthewTobrien2 жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly disagree, Egor. While using the Gap Clip Method may feel quick in the beginning stages of an edit, it gets incredibly cumbersome when doing extensive revisions and it's far more time consuming over time because you're having to do two, three, and four more operations per edit because you're not using the Magnetic Timeline.
@NazarovEgor2 жыл бұрын
@@matthewTobrien I guess it depends on what you edit. For THAT moment you create entire compound (or even two) but using gap and one click rewrite to primary line will be faster, and you you won’t have additional comp you don’t really need.

Thank you so much for this tutorial - coming from Premiere - this elucidates the magnetic timeline perfectly! Is there a way to make global markers like in Premiere?
@matthewTobrien2 жыл бұрын
I don't believe so... You can add markers to clips in the Timeline but you won't see those markers added to the matching clip in the Browser. But if you add a marker to a clip in the Browser and then add that clip to the Timeline, the marker will carry over. If you add a marker to a clip in the Browser and that clip is already in the Timeline, you won't see the marker appear in the Timeline as well. But you can click on "Final Cut Pro" in the upper left menus and choose the Submit Feedback option and start telling Apple's ProApps team what improvements you'd like to see for the app. Definitely worthwhile to do so.
