If you're at all an avid photographer and have always felt stuck with Adobe Lightroom, your only real alternative is Capture One, right? But I'm hell-bent on bringing Aperture 3 back from the dead and installing it on my 2013 Mac Pro so I can finally edit and catalogue my 35mm film scans without paying a dime to rent software. What are you using to edit & catalogue your photos?

Apple should publicly release the source code for Aperture if they really don’t intend to bring it back to life. It was a great product and with some loving development from passionate developers it could dethrone Lightroom. RIP Adobe

I ran - not walked away from Photoshop and fully embraced Aperture back in the day. Like others I was shell shocked when Apple abandoned this terrific product. It’s true that today’s Photos has incorporated some of what made Aperture so great, but it’s still lacking. I wish it could be brought up to date since I don’t have the money or space to add a dedicated computer just for Aperture.
@fxckrio
@fxckrio 8 күн бұрын
If it's any condolences, Aperture being abandoned for as long as it has means it doesn't have support for a lot of cameras - I've enjoyed using it for some older stuff recently, but even gear that isn't on the bleeding edge, like my 5D mk4, just isn't supported at all, so it won't open the raws. It's a massive shame since it was a very neat piece of software, but unless you use a camera from pre ~2015 it's not particularly useful.

Incredible! There are plenty of older Intel Macs out there and very inexpensive. One idea might be to get a 27" iMac since it combines all the best features of a "fast" computer with a great display. If I didn't have the 2013 Mac Pro I would have been scouring Facebook Marketplace for a 27" iMac.

I keep a legacy Mac Mini specifically dedicated to Aperture. By discontinuing Aperture, Apple lost a lot of love (about 30 years worth) from me. Literally a career damaging impacting me - the Photos app being a total joke for professionals. What the world really needs is a Pro, multi-user version of Aperture. Because being the photographer and the manager of a professional photo practice can't be done by a single person. Aperture was great so far as it went, but it does not go far enough when I need to track licensing deals and asset delivery/access for clients. As for apple displays - good luck keeping old Apple displays operating. I've got a graveyard of failed Apple Cinema Displays.

Apple already makes pro apps for video editors and music producers but they won’t for photographers? Especially since Apple talks so much about how “pro” the iPhone Pro cameras are? That’s pretty much what I have been doing with a spare MacBook Air since 2014. Although I have migrated to C1, I still use Aperture 3.6.1 (with help from the Retroactive patch) to manage my edited images and their metadata. Additionally, I use the Light Table feature for brainstorming montage ideas. Even now, 10 years later, I still haven’t found a comparable photo editor/manager that could deal with metadata as extensively and flexibly as Aperture, never mind the unique (amongst photo editing/management software) Light Table feature. Although long ‘dead’ Aperture is still light years ahead of others in these aspects.

Oh Aperture..still use it, and have several 100gb libraries that Aperture handles so well. Have outputted the libraries to C1 and Photos, but still work best in Aperture’s database, where folders and projects are so easily used, and modified.. Often overlooked, Aperture does best in library databases as well as photo editing. FYI - I use C1 for fine art, LR for general photo use, but Aperture is best for huge libraries.

I hate Adobe for their arrogance in abandoning legacy software users and intentionally making the software unusable. I’ve been working with Aperture ever since. Some of its features are vastly superior to Adobe and more specialized. Also have been struggling to continue to use the legacy software for Final Cut Pro studio suite in the big box. Companies can continue to develop new software for new hardware, but there’s no excuse for them to cripple older software on legacy hardware that has been optimized for one purpose. It’s unforgivable. It’s seriously theft of the consumer license agreements. I just want to make the best of the workflow that was state of the art at one time. The social engineering by these software companies is absolutely abusive.

@@matthewTobrien Try a neutral grey background. The standard Apple wall papers combined with regular application UI tend to mask light bleed issues. I tried three demo screens in the store and none of them had the issues. The Apple tech at the Genius Bar suggest this might be a quality control issues but also agreed this shouldn't happen with a display at that price level.

I always have a visceral reaction in regards to how old stuff from 10-20 years ago is made to be obsolete. Imagine if the ancient babylonians had something like that: Ohh that ancient babylonian tool would only work properly from 1120BC to 1112BC.

Yes, yes, yes ... I came to Aperture late long after Apple, Inc. had phased it out. However, I always have old Apple desktop systems sitting around along with vintage Apple operating systems. While, I love to use Aperture can never get it to run past Apple's "cat" named operating systems. So, I just keep it on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (which, also supports Rosetta 1) and it works perfectly (smile ... smile).

I loved Aperture and the whole concept of Editor and Digital Asset Management in one. Had a very public argument within John Nack over Adobe’s bullshit pricing/ distribution where it cost me more for an upgrade than in the US. That was the end of Adobe for me (Lightroom 2). I’ve spoken to people at Affinity about making a Lightroom/ DAM style app, but so far nothing. With the Canva takeover I doubt that will happen now. Might just have to do what you did and resurrect some old Apple hardware and run Aperture again.

During his tenure at Apple, Bhatt led engineering teams for several key projects, including Aperture, iPhoto, and the Mac version of Photos. Also if you want a more modern non-Adobe app have you looked at Photomator or Pixelmator Pto?

Adobe reminds me a lot of Blockbuster video. Years of being hammered by late fees, paying $100+ for their special VHS or DVD copies if lost and damaged. Same era, I also was charged for canceling Adobe contracts (I didn't know I was in early) or changing them. Lousy customer service and constant selfish terms. So happy to have every iota of Adobe off my MBP.

I want something that's detached from iCloud and relies on local storage. I don't want 118MB photo files to rip through my limited iCloud storage nor do I want them visible in my Photos library across all of my devices. I haven't looked at Pixelmator but I assume it doesn't have strong features for cataloguing? Just editing?

@@matthewTobrien Pixelmator is a great extension for the Photos App. It switches really fast to the Pixelmator View when you click on it in Photos. And Photomator is in some ways even better...u open your entire Photos App with all the fotos with Photomator and u can use more advanced controls...all the changes are automatically updated to the Fotos App. Its really good. In my opinion it is what Aperture used to be more or less.
